i may get an xbox soon or for christmas...and i have heard that some drives are better than others on the xbox...IIRC...the order from best to worst is:

1. samsung
2. phillips
3. thompson

is that correct?

if so, is there a way to tell what drive an xbox has if i buy it from a store like best buy or eb games where i cant open it?

thanks :D

sorry, just figured out you want a way without opening it. Yeah, no way I know of. Hope the visual aid helps somebody though.
There's not really a confirmed way. Alot of people guess by the dates...
hmm...so what dates = what drives?

and was my "ranking of drives" correct?

I would not really worry about the drive unless you are looking to burn a specific media to the Xbox (some work on one drive and not on another).

Also, make sure you buy a warranty as it is well worth the price

check on the back, everything above v 1.2 is good, you should be able to see it through a whole in the box. If you get any of the bundles, they are good

That all depends on what your definition of good is. I got the Sega GT/JSRF bundle for christmas a couple of years ago and it came with the dreaded Thompson drive. ::fingers crossed:: It's treated me good so far....

I think he meant the warranty it comes with when you buy it.

my christmas top spin/ncaa 05 came with a samsung if that helps, i also gotten a thompson with the sega gt/JSRF bundle

IMO ncaa 05 sux, wish it was madden or espn football instead, top spin is allrite though, i was expecting virtua tennis 3 but virtua tennis is way better than this

oh ok...isnt the christmas bundle (ncaa and top spin) the newest xbox bundle?

btw, which xbox bundle out there is the best for around 150? the only one i know is the christmas one...

I mean actually spending the 20 bucks and buying the warranty from Best Buy or whereever. Well worth what it costs IMO

when I bought mine MS wanted 50 for 2 years, whereas BB wanted 25

um, first microsoft choose thomson at launch, probally cheapest and most affordable, then moved up to philips, and so on.

y does this generations system have so many problems? i never had a problem with my ps1. and i think that they ran out of thompsons so they ask other companies to make more drives, what if next yr they have a sony drive in an xbox
All I know is Thompson drives aren't all that bad. Only a couple DRE's over the 2+ years I've had it.
And the two launch day Thompson Xboxes I have are both failing. Glad to hear that you're not having any problems but a lot of people are.

And the launch day Thomspon Xbox I have has only given me a DRE on Halo which I also got on release date. However, it's definitely not my xbox, it's my cd that is the problem.

There doesnt seem to be a very reliable way to tell which you get before you open the box, and many still debate over which drive is the worst.

I went through three ps1... those things were made of the cheapest materials in the world. You sir are the only person I know who has had good expereiences with the first ps.
