Since my health insurance doesn't kick in for another couple of months, I'm thinking of just paying for my needed dental work (make all the jokes you want). Anyone know how much it costs to get some failed med student to rip a couple wisdom teeth out of my head?

599 US dollars.

Sorry, it's a reflex.

Seriously though, I have no idea, but what I do know is that it fucking sucks ass. I was out for like a week afterwards.

My friend had to pay $2,000 to get all four removed, I believe.

I had all four removed, but insurance covered it.

Oh yeah , I forgot to mention one of the best things about getting your wisdom teeth pulled.

Are you ready for this ?

Yellow and black bruises on your face . :whistle2:#

Yeah I'd just wait until you get the insurance unless it's really such a huge problem that you can't wait.

Richlough: I actually had NO bruises. But did it fucking hurt like hell.

I didn't either , my older sister did though , she was pretty devastated about it . She refused to leave the house until they were completely gone .

I just have a feeling that one of these days, I'm gonna wake up in the middle of the night, and look like Lisa Simpson, after years of not getting braces:

All my 4 wisdom tooth had to be surgically removed because they wouldn't comeout. My dentist cant remove it so I had to goto a dental surgeon. The surgeon said I didnt need 1 of them removed, Insurance covered it but I had to pay some co-pay for like 300 I think, not sure.. but I looked at my yearly statement of account with my Dental Insurance and it was like $1500ish.

And FYI, I didnt have bruises after..but I threw up after I got out of there. fucking painful as hell after the anesthesia ran its course.

That was one of the best episodes.
Good luck , I had all 4 of mine pulled , back in like 1988 .
Hey, your age is showing. :whistle2:X  Probably had them pulled before I was born.

But yeah, hurts like fuck and isn't worth paying for if you don't have insurance. Mine sucked worse than anyone I've known and I was laid up for 2-3 weeks, lots of blood, couldn't eat solid food for weeks and lost like 30 pounds when it was all done.

And as FlipSide said, anethesia sucks if you aren't used to drugs/alcohol. I did fine with it but my sister in law was just shaking and crying after she woke up. Thankfully, I didn't vomit because I couldn't imagine that with four bloody holes in my mouth.

Yea it's around $1500 to $2000. Don't forget that this is surgery, so you will have local anesthetic as well as being put under. But afterwards they give you some lovely drugs for the pain. My grab bag was full of Percoset. It was very nice.

Only prescription meds for important things, not painkillers for a couple pulled teeth.

Because the penis is a soft organ and can't do that.

The only way it would cost $2k like mentioned above is if they have to be surgically removed i.e if they grown and tuck themselves under the jawbone.

On the flip side of things, my wisdom tooth removal couldn't have been easier. Insurance covered all of it and I went out with friends the same day I had all four out. After the anesthesia wore off, I never had a problem; never used any of the Vicodin they said I'd need, and didn't end up with infections or dry sockets (though I did make sure to keep the area clean and flushed out while it was healing).

Good luck!
Is it weird if I haven't even (to the best of my knowledge) had mine come in yet?
I know alot of folks in their late thirties just having theirs come in. Some people never actually get them and thats not weird.

Its true, I don't have wisdom teeth on the top of my mouth. I only have two on the bottom, that grew tucked into my jawbone.

I vaguely recall it costing around $400 per tooth to have all 4 removed. I was fortunate at the time that I had a job with dental insurance. I think I only paid $15 out of pocket.

Mine were about $800 per tooth nearly a decade ago. Yup, quite a lot, but the oral surgeon was amazing. No bruising whatsoever, no pain immediately following the procedure and for the several days of healing thereafter, and the second one I had removed healed quite well in just a matter of a few days.

Still, find the best man or woman you can for the job and wait for insurance. The former will make sure you're back to your normal self much faster than otherwise (I've had friends who went to certain people who probably shouldn't be working on teeth) and the latter will hopefully make sure that your bill is as negligable as possible.

Hey VG, don't even think about blowing $2k on this one. Seriously. Funk dat. I'm sure you can turn this mutha out for a lot less scratch, dig?

I had to have mine surgically removed as well. It wasn't so bad. I could of drove myself home after words too. I hardly used the pain medication they gave me. I did have some swelling and it hurt to eat but it wasn't like I couldn't do anything for a week or so. I was back at work on Monday as I got my wisdom teeth removed I think a Thursday.

Is there a dental school near where you live? They may do it for free or with a significant discount (I know they do where I went to school). After all, dental students have to practice on somebody.

Dental work is always dependant a LOT on your dentist. I have had several different dentists and their prices vary a ton for the same work. One guy wanted about $4,000 for 2 caps that I could get done elsewhere for $1200 or so. Wisdom teeth are even worse because a lot of it depends on how bad they are. If they are really bad expect lot of follow up visits if the root is curved badly it can't just be yanked out. If you can stand the pain I would try to hold out until the health insurance kicks in. If you go that route just make sure your insurance will cover enough to be worth it! I'm a Government employee with Blue Cross/Blue Shield and my dental stinks. They barely cover anything outside of cleanings. I had to get a supplemental plan to get any decent coverage.

I had to have one of my wisdom teeth taken out a couple months ago. Just had local anesthetic, was in and out in about an hour. Far less of an ordeal than I had been led to believe.

i think it depends on how your teeth are, if its a complicated removal it'll cost more. If your teeth are growing at an angle and impacted against your other teeth they'll be harder to extract. i've heard anywhere from 60-300 per tooth. Also, you don't want to wait too long or they might start pushing the rest of your teeth out of alignment.

i had my wisdom teeth taken out. Piece of cake. Didn't need to take any painkillers either. ate Gerber for a while, good stuff.

It depends on if they are impacted, infected, etc. Also if you want just plain pain killers or go the full nine and get knocked the fuck out for it.

I finally got my last two removed around this time last year. It was to the point where the pain was so bad that I could not sleep at all and was in tears because it hurt so bad.

Just hope that the dentist or oral surgeon doesn't keep asking "Is it safe?" hehehehe

>_> In CA they canned 100,000 peoples medical insurance. I was one of them. My dentist I had when I had insurance told me I needed to get rid of them. My partents would have payed for 1/2 and they payed for the other. It was going to be 2,000 total. However I didnt get it cause it was cancled. However my old dentist told me that I could get them removed but you will be fine without get them them removed. So I never did.

Its very expensive to do anything medical wise without insurance.

I got mine removed about 3 weeks ago, and the total was about $1200 for all 4. I had to pay 25% of that and my insurance covered the rest. For me it was very painless and was pretty much fine the next day.

There's a topic like this one on here every once in a while and I like to warn people who put off getting wisdom teeth pulled...don't.

I waited until my late 20's and:

1. One of my wisdom teeth grew into the tooth next to it and shattered it (both had to be removed).

2. The bottom wisdom teeth had grown into the jaw so they had to be broken off to be removed. In fact, I believe the dr. said that the couldnt get all of the teeth out and that there are still pieces stuck in there.

3. The worst part is that one of the teeth had grown in so far that when it was pulled it pulled a hole in my sinus and I spent over a month coughing up blood every morning while it healed (imagine your morining breath if you have blood pool in your mouth at night).

As for the OP, wait for your insurance to kick in if it's only a few months. I just wanted to warn everyone b/c all the problems I had would have been avoided if I had gotten them pulled when I was younger.

I woke up during the middle of getting my wisdom teeth pulled. I didn't hurt, but I saw the oral surgeon, heard a weird crunching sound, and felt him moving stuff around in my mouth. It was surreal.

I went through it exactly like this. Nothing better than waking up to a guy with bloody white gloves stuffing his hands and pliers in your mouth. Good times. I paid around 1,400 for getting all 4 removed, this was back like 4 or 5 years ago.

Yea, it's about $2000 for all 4. Getting mine out last year wasn't that bad. I had minor swelling but not too much pain, I used ice packs every half hour and took pain killers every 3. Kind of annoying but worth it to avoid swelling and pain

i had no bruises and no pain afterwards just swelling. it was about $1700 for the entire thing. i chose laughing gas vs being put under.

I only had to have one of my four removed, but got it done two weeks ago. Had to go to an oral surgeon. Cost $595 with nitrous gas as well as local anasthetic. Plus free gauze!

I got mine taken out in 2001 when I was fifteen, the damn things were coming in and blocking the growth on my 12-year molars. yes, that's right, my 12-year molars... my molars came in really slow. The family's insurance covered virtually everything. I was actually up and about the day of the surgery and helped paint my living room and had some friends over. it was mildly pleasant
