Dear webOS developer:

We have opened the next chapter for webOS, and we understand that you must have many questions. Yesterday we announced that we will focus on the future of webOS as a software platform but we will no longer be producing webOS devices. While this was a difficult decision, it's one that will strengthen our ability to focus on further innovating with webOS as we forge our path forward. Throughout this journey, our developers will continue to be a vital part of the future of webOS.

We will continue to support, innovate and develop the webOS App Catalog. Our intent is to enhance our merchandising and presentation of your great products and to continue to build our webOS app ecosystem.

As many of you are aware, we are currently scheduled to hold many developer events around the world. We are planning to continue with these events, however, due to the recent announcements; the nature of them will change. These updates will be posted on our events registration site this coming week. We are eager to present to you the updated strategy for webOS and to hear your feedback.

Lastly, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for your ongoing support for webOS and the many teams responsible for it here at HP. This is a particularly dynamic time in the mobile industry and sometimes tough decisions need to be made about not only what to do, but also what not to do. This has been one of those times. Together with our great webOS developer community, we are confident that we will meet the challenges ahead and build momentum for optimal success.

We will be communicating with you frequently over the next few weeks and we look forward to hearing from you throughout this process.

Thanks for your support

It may be a futile, doomed effort, but they aren't killing and totally orphaning the Touchpad. Yeah, it's going to be limited, but it's ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS! A 9.7" tablet with Gorilla Glass screen for a C-note. Hell, I'm gonna get one just cuz! There's a Kindle app, so BAM!!! $100 eReader!

Just called OD about cash store pick-up and they told me that they're not honoring online orders and that they don't have any in stock. I call bullshit. El Hoardo was probably in there this morning snatching them up or else those greedy employees got to them. Typical of the types that live around here. Argh!

Sears, Kmart, and Amazon all have them in stock but at retail.

my order is still being verified, ordered mine at 8:55 pst. If they cancel my order will I still be charged for the paper I bought to use the code?

got a 32 last night off the hp site at like 1030 est and it just went through and i just got charged i used the 2727 code

Best Buy would not sell them today, despite having them. They claimed that "HP wanted all stock returned."

Office Max, Depot, Staples, Target, Walmart were all out.

Oh well.

Or one possible scenario is that amazon is lagging because they are currently negotiating with HP on how much they are willing to pay for each tablet. If I'm amazon, I offer $25 and sell them for $90. Then tell all the price adjusters to go screw themselves. (nicely)

Imagine how many units amazon has sitting in their warehouses. HP doesn't want trucks lined up waiting to return these things. If anything, I bet you HP wants to wash their hands of the tablets more than amazon.
Amazon doesn't sit on huge piles of inventory unlike Best Buy, so there won't be any 'work with me or you can just eat it when I return it' quasi extortion discussions. Amazon will be more along the lines of, hey if you want to sell 25K of them, lets talk about it and I'll do a deal of the day promotion with it.

While HP definitely wants to put this chapter behind them, given the response to the price cut in the market and on their own website, they are probably thinking, hmmm, maybe we priced these a bit low. While this hardware is a sunk costs, most companies don't go out of their way and rush to lose $200 when they could drag it out a bit a month or two and maybe only lose $150. Their cost of capital isn't so high to justify them doing a fire sale this badly nor do I believe they are running out of cash. In some cases it might be worth it to maintain retailer good will (such as with walmart) and clear out in store inventory quickly and pull the rest from retailers warehouses.

I don't know about big lots, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see some touchpads showing up at black friday door buster deals at slightly higher prices (possibly bundled with a case or a dock) at various retailers. At even a slightly higher prices, it still cheaper than a kindle or an ipod touch and much more capable (even if it is a dead platform)

Spent a lot of time driving around only to get shot down everywhere. I was either too late, or like at Staples, told the price hadn't changed. Frustrating because I hit another Staples on the way home and they said "yeah, they're wrong and should read their communications." So I guess if I had pushed, I might have been able to score one, but...that's life.

Folks are posting Craiglist ads telling others not to buy the flippers stock and informing anyone searching for "HP TouchPad" that they were discounted to $99 & $149 at most retailers and online.

Good times...fuck the flippers.
The plot thickens... Walmart.com appears to have de-listed the standalone touchpads but still has some kind of bundle sku listed.
I had the bundle link but it was deleted or moved to another link
mind linking me?

Well it's been fun, but I need a nap. Hopefully when I wake up I'll see that my order with Office Depot went through. 'til then....

*bows*

What makes you say that? Amazon doesn't have the inventory costs (shelf space) that Best Buy does but they certainly stock a ton of product.
Yes! My order from HP last night just changed to being processed. Also used the 2727 code.
what exactly was the 2727 code? I heard it was military so I ignored it. But what was the $ off?
Yes! My order from HP last night just changed to being processed. Also used the 2727 code.
The one I ordered last night switched recently as well (I used a student account rather than the military code).

Did anyone order from Staples online last night and/or this morning before they sold out? I purchased a 32GB touchpad for full retail. I got an email right after saying they received my order and it is being processed. I just wanted to know if anyone received a cancellation email... Thanks
I'm not too thrilled with Best Buy on this one...really not. I'd love to know what drove their policy on this.
Yeah it sucks that you can't buy it there but what exactly is your beef with them? They're allowed to send things back to the manufacturer if it benefits them financially. It's not like they had a big ad anywhere (or even small ad) that said "COME AND GET THE TOUCHPADS CHEAP!"
I'm not too thrilled with Best Buy on this one...really not. I'd love to know what drove their policy on this.
Yeah, and Walmart. Seriously - I understand a price mistake not being honored, or us trying to cheat the system, but this was totally legit and they screwed so many people it's not even funny.

couldn't find one anywhere near river oaks mall in calumet city IL. i'm not driving around anymore just gonna keep refreshing amazon and newegg hoping for price drop
what exactly was the 2727 code? I heard it was military so I ignored it. But what was the $ off?
Make an account on their site (I dont think it was their regular site) and used that 2727 code to register. Then the price would show up as on sale when you checked the store. Used another coupon to take $30 off the total price but the total has to be over $150 so I bought a pack of paper for $6. Total for the tablet + paper was $143 shipped.

So, I found one at a Wal-Mart close to me, but they say they are not selling the HP Touchpad at $99, but instead the old price. How can they actually do that since two other Wal-Mart stores are already sold out at the discontinued price?

Buy it and get the price adjusted at another Wal-Mart...or later when they realize the new price.
what exactly was the 2727 code? I heard it was military so I ignored it. But what was the $ off?
It was an EPP code you could use to get the discounted price. Some people were using it if the .edu email address wasn't working or if they just didn't have one. The discounted price was the same either way.

I think most people used it not knowing it was for the army, but in any case I can't see HP cancelling all of them. I'm more concerned about the coupon codes, but unless some new developments occur I doubt even that will be a problem.

They're the only retailer of the Big Box stores that are sitting on them. They're perfectly willing to sell them for $400-$500 today, but not at the price HP has directed retailers to list them at. Obviously, I don't know the deal corp has worked out with HP, but I would wager that selling them and taking in cash revenue plus a kickback from HP would be more effective than what they're doing.

I never said they weren't allowed to send things back, or that they had a big sign. The store near me has 27 16gb units in stock, and 18 32gb units. They are sitting there, while every store around them is getting a ton of foot traffic and sales off of them, including accessory sales, which are high margin items.

I'm not sitting here making some baseless statement. They're missing an opportunity to sell through, plain and simple.
Buy it and get the price adjusted at another Wal-Mart...or later when they realize the new price.
Yeah, I thought of doing that, but it is a little irritating when the guy automatically tells me that they are not selling them at that price. I'm thinking that it is for other reasons, ie. he or his friends plan on picking it up....I might just go and pick it up and see what it rings up. I would think it would ring up at the discontinued price since all other Wal-Marts are selling it at that, wouldn't you?
I would think it would ring up at the discontinued price since all other Wal-Marts are selling it at that, wouldn't you?
Yes it should be in their system...it will ring up at the discounted price.

If you wanted it, you should go back and buy it and look at his dumb expression after you called his bluff.

Hopefully sometime on Monday or next week, HP will have a handle on how much stock they have left and it won't feel like such a clusterf**k trying to get one. Seems pretty hectic and near impossible at this point.
Only 10 left in stock -- order soon.
If they all get bought, why the heck would they lower the price?
What makes you say that? Amazon doesn't have the inventory costs (shelf space) that Best Buy does but they certainly stock a ton of product.
They hold onto a very small amount of inventory...I'm talking enough to fill hours or maybe a single day's worth orders (although they beef this up for the holidays). You place an order amazon, then they place an order for it to their supplier (either the manufacturer or wholesaler), they get it in a day and put it in a box to ship to you. For tech stuff that goes stale fast, the odds are they hold next to nothing on hand. You place an order for HP laptop, they place order to HP, who had likely has a main warehouse next to one of Amazon's shipping facility and it gets trucked over in a couple of hours. All these big warehouses Amazon is building as of late, that's for 3rd party sellers using fulfilled by amazon stuff, not Amazon's own inventory.

From what's being reported, they are not even selling them at MSRP so I don't know where you're getting this statement from.

I could have bought one a few hours ago with no problem at full price. As usual, Best Buy is varying from store to store, employee to employee.
Looks like Amazon pulled both versions...
I show them both still there.

J&R Music World pulled them, as did Fry's and Walmart.
I could have bought one a few hours ago with no problem at full price. As usual, Best Buy is varying from store to store, employee to employee.
If you can buy them at full price, why wouldn't they price-match competitors that are selling them at the discount?

Do they have a new selective price match policy

honestly what would you do if you where best buy? send em back to hp for no loss or sell em at huge loss? after the discontinue is over and they send all of them back to hp you will probably be able to buy the ones from best buy straight from hp.com. after all they don't want them just to collect dust in a warehouse

No Amazon pulled theirs...obviously other merchants sell under the umbrella of Amazon.

Amazon still shows in stock, but if you add it to your cart it gives this message:

We're sorry. The item HP TouchPad Wi-Fi 16 GB 9.7-Inch Tablet Computer is no longer available from the seller you selected. To see if it's available from another seller, click here to return to the item's product detail page.

He's the only person I've heard report that you can buy them at full price. Probably just an uninformed employee.

Lol at the hoodrat at my Best Buy saying NO and hanging up on me when I asked if they had any HP Touchpad tablets in stock. What a pathetic chain.
