We have opened the next chapter for webOS, and we understand that you must have many questions. Yesterday we announced that we will focus on the future of webOS as a software platform but we will no longer be producing webOS devices. While this was a difficult decision, it's one that will strengthen our ability to focus on further innovating with webOS as we forge our path forward. Throughout this journey, our developers will continue to be a vital part of the future of webOS.

We will continue to support, innovate and develop the webOS App Catalog. Our intent is to enhance our merchandising and presentation of your great products and to continue to build our webOS app ecosystem.

As many of you are aware, we are currently scheduled to hold many developer events around the world. We are planning to continue with these events, however, due to the recent announcements; the nature of them will change. These updates will be posted on our events registration site this coming week. We are eager to present to you the updated strategy for webOS and to hear your feedback.

Lastly, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for your ongoing support for webOS and the many teams responsible for it here at HP. This is a particularly dynamic time in the mobile industry and sometimes tough decisions need to be made about not only what to do, but also what not to do. This has been one of those times. Together with our great webOS developer community, we are confident that we will meet the challenges ahead and build momentum for optimal success.

We will be communicating with you frequently over the next few weeks and we look forward to hearing from you throughout this process.

Thanks for your support

It may be a futile, doomed effort, but they aren't killing and totally orphaning the Touchpad. Yeah, it's going to be limited, but it's ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS! A 9.7" tablet with Gorilla Glass screen for a C-note. Hell, I'm gonna get one just cuz! There's a Kindle app, so BAM!!! $100 eReader!

Ah, fair enough and most appreciated, only read the first page on my phone so wasn't able to see the wiki portion of it.

Regardless, My place of business has been bombarded with rather cranky people looking for this who sour at the fact that we have had none for sale, therefore, I figured this would save trouble for both retail workers and folks looking for it and to avoid wasting their time at any Costco.
I worded mine as follows:
Well, if it makes you feel any better, Amazon changed the payment policy earlier this year. Now sellers don't get your money until the order is confirmed as shipped, so, technically, Amazon held your money for three days. ;) Still, your point is still valid.

Confirmed via Twitter- no touchpads today or over the weekend.
Let's go out with our friends, eat pizza, drink beer, and make love...
...and a lot of Netflix in between.
See you,guys.

In all honesty, she sucks as a PR person. Her grammar/wording is horrible generally leads us into further confusion :)
Just as a Public Service Announcement, please spread the word to all places that you post that Costco, though they did carry the tablet, sent back every single one to get full credit. Therefore, Absolutely no warehouse will have them. Go ahead and add it. Keep things neat, please.
Here's my question now. Will the $99 Touchpad affect the tablet market? Basically, will Apple/Samsung/Blackberry/others see a drop in sales because the target consumer will already have a Touchpad? Or will people play around with it a little bit, think that's cool but I should still get an iPad or whatever, sell it off (probably make a few bucks in the process), and just buy an iPad anyway?
This is an interesting real-world test of opportunity cost economics in which demand goes up as price goes down. HP could barely give them away for $500 (yes, I know how that sounds), but at $99 people have spent a WEEK trying to secure one. The problem Android tablets have had is trying to compete with the iPad's price/feature point. The Xoom came in $300 over the iPad and didn't offer the same, much less 60% better performance.

It costs to make these things and there MUST BE PROFIT in it - sorry, all you brainwashed Commie robots, but reality is what it is - for the makers and retailers, so there's a floor unless taking a loss on the hardware can be made up with software royalties like console makers do. The reason Apple is able to undercut on price where Motorola can't is because they can clip 30% off every App Store sale while Moto can't. They just sell the hardware and their opportunity for profit ends there.

This is where I'm interested in what Amazon has up its sleeve with their tablet. They've got Kindle, MP3, Instant Video, and Android App stores meaning if they sell a branded Android tablet with a nice Amazon storefront interface, they'll be able to hold the hardware prices down to cost (or take a loss) because they won't have to allow for a retailer profit and they can presume people will buy from them since the icon is right there. By allowing other sources of content, they'll be immune from anti-trust charges and be able to smack Apple's iron-fisted control of the App Store as anti-consumer.

A $300 Amazodroid (pronounced Amaze-o-droid) tablet would deliver a solid crack to Apple's kneecaps IMNSHO.

I agree with this and was interested in the Amazon tablet until I heard it was only going to be a 7". I already have a Color Nook running Cyanogenmod so I don't need another portable 7". The Nook goes with me just about anywhere I want it to. The Touchpad is pretty much going to be homebound most of the time.

I'm finding this to be a general theme in this event, esp. with BB.

I guess I may end up with some HP Touchpad accessories (official case, official power adapter and a screen protector) on my trade list. DRAT!

Also, while you were willing to get a Nooky and hack Android onto it, the general public won't BUT if Amazon came out with a full-tilt Android tab for $250 (Nook sized) or $300-$350 (closer to iPad size), then it's going to be a MAJOR player in the game unless they botch the hardware. Remember, the reason there is no Palm anymore is because the mounted their slick OS onto fragile, underpowered hardware.

This is what I thought. Gotta take care of their first round of orders first, + maybe the looming hurricane doesn't help.

This is good news for me, I can enjoy a stress free weekend and try for it on monday.
 HP really needs to do away with the whole promo code thing. very lame.
It might just be easier for them to run it using a code, given their app store's interface. I don't mind the promo codes, although I do think it's ridiculous that they'd put limited uses on those codes, so that they're completely used up within a few hours.

They know that their user base just jumped dramatically, so the limited uses of the codes seems silly.

Yeah, well, they ARE paying these devs for each time the code is used so I am sure there is a specific budget for that....

I could have sworn I read it on Engadget last month, but now I cannot find it. Maybe I was misinformed or am forgetting where I read it.

I wasn't disagreeing with you about the amazon android tabs general marketability - more about my desire to get one ( if it is only 7"). If it's a 10" and I can't get another TP for my girlfriend then maybe I will get it and give her the TP.

Edit: In searching engadget I saw that there were rumored to be 2 models - a 7 & a 10. I may have the 7" in my head just from seeing the mock-up picture they always use.

bit of perspective here, if these places got 10K orders, if they could proccess not including packing / shipping 1 order every minute, it'd take ~166 hrs, or ~7 days time with 1 person working 24/7 to go through every order. @8 people it's still 20 hrs each just for touchpad orders.

While they're trying to take care of all of that they still have to pack / ship the touchpads, as well as run the rest of the business. no easy feat for a small business to manage.

Edit: this obviously doesn't apply for big box stores, but for things like zone, onsale, etc

walmart sucks for refusing to price match their own website on the touchpad accessories. Finally found a case in stock and they want $49 for it still.

That's a good point. They should have probably stated in their blog, inviting everyone to download the apps for free, that only the first so many people would actually get anything.

People don't usually get upset when they are informed ahead of time.

Actually, Wal-Mart is supposed to price match their own website now. They even have a commercial for it, I think it's still at managers descretion though.

While true... most will not read it. They will go "ooo free code" then get pissed lol

Glad HP let people know ahead of time that they won't be doing anything until Monday - gives me one less thing to be concerned about with the hurricane looming.

I have a Zagg protector on my iPhone and it's survived almost 3 years and is only now showing signs of wear around the home button. They can be a bear to install but they are well-worth it IMHO.
Remember, the reason there is no Palm anymore is because the mounted their slick OS onto fragile, underpowered hardware.
If you're talking about the touchpad being underpowered its not. Its actually a beast. WebOS is just horribly optimized to use its hardware. The touchpad has the latest snapdragon processor and a really good GPU that can do 3D visuals (like the nintendo 3DS, but the touchpad obviously lacks a 3d screen), 30 fps 1080p video, and various other tasks really quickly. By all accounts the touchpad should be nearly twice as fast as a tegra 2 and in theory should be faster then the iPad 2. The touchpad just uses newer technology. The only reason its so slow now is because WebOs 3.0 is pretty much an advanced developers build that lacks a lot of optimization. HP rushed this tablet out to market. Also from my understanding all the current builds of WebOs 3.0 for tablets aren't using the GPU at all. All processing is done on the CPU if the GPU is used at all its used at the very minimum. HTC is coming out with an Android tablet that pretty much is the touchpad in specs later this year. Hopefully touch pad owners could use that android build to have a much more optimized OS that takes advantage of its potential power. Check this link out to see an example of what the touchpad in theory could do with its hardware configuration (the hardware in this demo is running Android and not webO2). http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Sn...Mobile-World-Congress-Desert-Winds,12321.html

I will agree though that Palm Smart Phone were pretty underpowered compared to high end Droids and the iPhone 4.

I had a Pre and after sometimes being unable to open a second (and sometimes a first) card on this supposedly multi-tasking OS, I'd had it and started looking for alternatives. When Palm put themselves up for sale and HTC passed, folks at Pre Central got worried; when HP bought it and the first words out of their noise holes was how phones weren't their priority, the collective declaration of "We're outta here!" was deafening. Because of a nice coincidence in eligibility periods, all the people like me who'd gotten a Pre at launch were eligible for the Evo 4G at launch and a LOT of us jumped and never looked back. My first day with it made me feel like I'd gotten out of an abusive relationship. So fast, so many open apps. Ahhhhh.

As for hardware quality, other than the charger port cover falling off, I had the same Pre at the end as the beginning, but some people went thru 3, 5, even 9(!) Pres as they fell apart on them. I was the exception. I feel so bad for Palm, but they did it to themselves with shortchanged hardware and a terrible marketing strategy that will be taught in schools forever as a "DON'T DO THIS!!!!" example.

Hey sk. Could you flash some of those Android pads with WebOS instead?

Also I was chatting with one of those web HP reps. I love how "she" said that "Maybe the next Touchpad." then proceeded to look like "she" cut and pasted the line that HP was discontinuing support for the Touchpad. Kinda hilarious.
Bummer Sondariom, about Costco doing that but it always seems like you almost never get a great closeout deal there.

Got my shipment of 2 16gb TPs from onSale today. Packaging was great, no dents or anything like some BB and Office Depot people are reporting. Charging it right now.

As for the TP itself. You know it definitely feels like a cheap version of the iPad and all (I've tested out my friend's iPad pretty thoroughly) but for 99$ this is definitely a steal. Should provide some fun once I get fully situated with it.

So far it seems pretty responsive (even before any hacking/delogging/overclocking) so it should be interesting to see what it does once I speed it up.

One complaint I have about it though is the gyro on it. It's too damn sensitive. If you even slightly tilt the thing to the side it switches to landscape mode and so on. Gotta keep it perfectly straight to stay in the same mode (although maybe there are settings you can change for that...) I'll take a look later.

Got you. I know the first Pre was a POS my friend went through a bunch. I'd say hardware wise it something in between an iPhone 3 (before apple crippled the 3g with iOS 4) or a 3gs in performance. I can't blame you on jumping ship to the Evo 4g thats a nice phone.

I agree - it's really sensitive. I haven't gotten around to looking for the setting to lower the sensitivity yet, but you can lock the orientation it easy enough (top right menu).
