Dear webOS developer:

We have opened the next chapter for webOS, and we understand that you must have many questions. Yesterday we announced that we will focus on the future of webOS as a software platform but we will no longer be producing webOS devices. While this was a difficult decision, it's one that will strengthen our ability to focus on further innovating with webOS as we forge our path forward. Throughout this journey, our developers will continue to be a vital part of the future of webOS.

We will continue to support, innovate and develop the webOS App Catalog. Our intent is to enhance our merchandising and presentation of your great products and to continue to build our webOS app ecosystem.

As many of you are aware, we are currently scheduled to hold many developer events around the world. We are planning to continue with these events, however, due to the recent announcements; the nature of them will change. These updates will be posted on our events registration site this coming week. We are eager to present to you the updated strategy for webOS and to hear your feedback.

Lastly, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for your ongoing support for webOS and the many teams responsible for it here at HP. This is a particularly dynamic time in the mobile industry and sometimes tough decisions need to be made about not only what to do, but also what not to do. This has been one of those times. Together with our great webOS developer community, we are confident that we will meet the challenges ahead and build momentum for optimal success.

We will be communicating with you frequently over the next few weeks and we look forward to hearing from you throughout this process.

Thanks for your support

Richard Kerris
VP webOS Developer Relations

It may be a futile, doomed effort, but they aren't killing and totally orphaning the Touchpad. Yeah, it's going to be limited, but it's ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS! A 9.7" tablet with Gorilla Glass screen for a C-note. Hell, I'm gonna get one just cuz! There's a Kindle app, so BAM!!! $100 eReader!

I agree... Wouldn't be surprised if it was a bit more expensive than these two price points.

I all honesty, these touch pads will eventually go below 200 dollars. 400+ is way too much money for these things....

The author refers to webOS as being dead right away. Sure hope that entire division of HP (Palm) of hundreds still working on it are scratching their heads at that.

What a fool.

Quite honestly, the hit they have taken per unit is no more than they would have spent on marketing...well, maybe a little more than what they would have spent on marketing, but the key here is they must have at least 100,000 units in homes and peoples' hands right now. They essentially did what the console makers have been doing for ages, selling at a loss in order to get the product in the home. Now they just need people to keep buying those expensive accessories that cost little to make and buying software which they much make a certain %age on...

To those that had their orders fulfilled on the HP SMB site: were you charged your original shipping price (I think around $25) or did they throw in the free shipping?

According to the FAQ posted by MarkAtHP, all TouchPad orders should have been charged shipping though there was a bug and some people received free ship via a coupon.

Cool. Thanks for the info. Normally I'd complain about $25 shipping -- not this time. :D

I agree with you but if they do decide to jack the price up, interest and enthusiasm will go in the opposite direction.
Take a loss HP @ $99/$149, flood the market with WebOS users and then sell it off with the bulletpoint of X amount of new, enthusiastic users = profit?

Anyone else feel like Datavis is about to become the next Onsale by weeks end?

I'm betting their ebay profile takes a 20-30% hit if people don't start getting touchpads soon

The case I bought is very similar or the same thing. I think it is good for the price but be aware that it is made from fake leather and has a goofy smell to it. But the touchpad fits perfectly and all the cut outs are in the correct spots. The one I have also has magnets to keep the front flap closed securely.

I personally did not want to spend $30 on a case for a discounted tablet so I tried a cheap case and I am satisfied with the purchase.

I believe the "fire sale" is to create interest for WebOS, since iOS and Android are the top two in the mobile operating system market. If HP considers making more tablets, then I say this sale is a publicity stunt. Otherwise, another manufacturer will make tablets for WebOS.

And after seeing WebOS in action, anyone who was thinking about branching into their own phones/tablets that didn't AT LEAST inquire with HP about licensing/buying WebOS is a fool. It is a SOLID OS.

There is already talk about Samsung buying WebOS from HP.

And no news from either twitter account.

I agree. My dad works in a tech job and I got him one. Since then according to him everyone who sees it makes insane claims (like its better than the Ipad and such) and in the end is just generating hype.

So all this news about HP dropping all hardware (save printers- or at best selling/spinning off divisions) including PC's, servers . . . etc. to focus almost exclusively on software was an elaborate ruse/ "publicity stunt" to get people to buy TouchPads and gain tablet market share?

My HP SMB order is still active on their website via Order Status, but I no longer show a pending charge on my credit card (and the charge has not posted either). Anyone else seeing this?

Mine did the same thing and my order is definately one that was made before the deadline they posted

I think some one previously posted that 'pending charges' only remain visible for 10 days, once they have been approved that dissent mean they were cancelled if the disappear, they just will show as charges once a charge order is received from the retailer
Pending charges on all CC's only last about 3 days.
Not true at all. They can last up to 30 days actually. So far both of mine which have been canceled are still pending on my CC. Basically, the only way the charge is removed is if 1) the retailer cancels, or 2) 30 days pass with no action from the retailer.

The HP CEO is taking the company down a death spiral trying to turn it into a software company, and there's plenty of casualties along the way.

If he has a clue, he'll spin their non-business PC group into a separate company, sell it off to someone like IBM did to Lenovo, and then things should settle down. As it is now, it's not likely to happen.

HP will only make more tablets to satisfy open orders and possible future demand through their website. As it stands right now, we have no idea how many orders are outstanding between the HP stores and HP's 3rd party vendors. Probably more than 100,000, if I had to take a guess.

I'd like to rebuttal the above with: If they are smart, they may rethink their death spiral strategy to kill off the company, depending on how many units they sold. I honestly have no idea how many were sold, but I would imagine at least, AT LEAST, 250,000. Considering many 3rd party vendors had 10's of 1,000's, 250k seems a reasonable low-ball.

With that in mind, that's an almost instant 250k new users who may be willing to spend money on webOS apps and accessories, not to mention the webOS phone coming out. If HP has ANY brain cells left, they'll see this and hopefully spin off the appropriate departments to better monetize the company as a whole like you mentioned above.
They have the same case at Amazon for $4, http://www.amazon.com/CL57511-Book-...ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1314705615&sr=1-1 I think I'll try it for that much. edit: NO free shipping with Prime.
The $7.99 is the better deal(not to mention, it's all around cheaper). If you were to ask for a refund, you'd get $4 back as they'd say all the other was for shipping. Better to find a similar item with free shipping than to worry about it being $4. That way, there isn't a shipping cost to subtract.
=Ionotropic;8808665]how do you redeem the codes for six pack apps?
When they come back up, go to the app store(make sure you are where all of the games and apps are), touch the little tab in the top left(wayyyy up in the corner-says HP App Catalog), touch Preferences and Accounts, add a credit card. When it's time to get your free 6 pack, it will give you a choice for card or code. Choose code(duh), get your free apps, remove your card.

I haven't gotten any, yet, but will.

My HP SMB order for the 32 version, that has sat in limbo from around 8am EST on Sunday the 21st, just got shipped. If you want to compare notes, my order did receive a confirmation on the 23rd, showing an order date of the 22nd, but the status on their site always showed "will inform" for ship date, and was stuck in "Admin" in terms of status. I only know it got shipped when they sent me an e-mail notice that my CC had been declined (I mentioned this before in an earlier post - my CC # got hacked somehow). Luckily, I had my new card in hand, phones them up, and 30 minutes later, I was able to change the billing info. They said it would ship today. They did not charge me for shipping. Final price was ~129.99.

Probably in regards to the CNN article about the possibility that the TouchPad will continue to be manufactured, at least for a little bit.

Hmm...need an expert opinion here. Back when the mass hysteria was in full swing (around 8/20), I tried forcing an order through HP's SMB site. I finally got an order through, but it told me the billing info did not match what my card had on file (I'm pretty sure it was just the phone number since I've recently moved). I tried multiple times to correct it, but as everyone knows, the website was crashing constantly, and I was never able to.

It did create an order number for me though, so I hoped that it would be something I could correct later. But when I checked the next day, there was no record of my order with that number and I never got a confirmation email. So, I just forgot about it and continued hunting. But with all the talk of updated statuses and the links Shrike posted, I decided to check one last time just now. And lo and behold, I found my order and it shows this:

Order Date | Order Status | Planned Delivery Date | Planned Ship Date
25-Aug-2011 | Admin | 06-Sep-2011 | 03-Sep-2011

It also shows my credit status as being "approved' and that my order was last updated on 8/25. I'm sure this is probably the same boat that many people are in right now (probably even some who did actually get email confirmations). I just figured my order was a lost cause. I'm guessing the stock that HP is trying to obtain is to fulfill these orders? Probably still a decent chance these get cancelled too right? I'm a little nervous that it changed my order date from 8/20 to 8/25. I don't want to get my hopes up too much, but it would be amazing if this actually came through after all this time.
Sigh. All I want is a damn $99 Touchpad! I even have the accessories ready to go :p. Nothing like the waiting game I suppose.
If you don't already have one, I suggest you make yourself an eBay account- or, at least familiarize yourself with the ins and outs of Craigslist.
(j/k I'm still hunting too- albeit very pessimistically.)

Well, I just had an interesting call with HP SM&B customer support. A rather bored sounding "Omar" started out by asking for my order number and then whether I had more than one order with them. I was put on hold, then he came back to ask if I was calling about something other than status. I told him yes and he proceeded to give me the story about how the large volume of orders...blah blah blah. He then let me know that I was looking at 6-8 weeks for my Touchpad. Just a little bit longer than HP has been telling everyone. /sigh

Finished changing my billing address and got off the phone. Hopefully this is a canned answer just to get people to stop calling.

The big problem and the reason most are calling (or at least mine) is that I ordered one on 20th and people on the 21st are saying they're progressing though the cycle. Since I only have 1 and im "assured one" but people who ordered after me got ahead of me... sets off some red flags. I wouldnt be shocked if this was a HUGE part of it.
