I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). I tried the kiosk thing today, but when I found what I was looking for it still showed up at full price. Even after I added it to my cart for an in-store pickup it didn't knock it down 50%. How do you get it to give you the 50% deal?

The kiosk was set to Best Buy's website, so I'm assuming I use that right? Or is there another site I'm supposed to use? How do I set the whole thing up? I'm confused. LOL

What DVD was it? Apparently some kiosk aren't taking the 50% off, did you try another Best Buy thats having the sale?

Did you go to a store that has 50% sale? The backordered stuff as well and a few are full price for some reason
 
just got dbz season 1-3, dbz broly movie pack, moribito, coyote ragtime show, dbz cooler double feature,dbz tree of might /lord slug ,& dbz history of tunks /bardock.

ordered / shipped from kiosk- yuyu hakusho season 4,black cat box set, tsubasa season1,&outlawstar boxset. thats it for me im done with the sale till i get more money.
 
I was told, that if you return and re-buy with debit/credit card, your info is stored to see if you do this constantly. I don't know if the CS was trying to scare me or something, but she seemed sweet.

Can they really refuse returns on the basis that you do it frequently?

You have to go to a store that is having the sale. Find a computer that has a blue screen and says kiosk. If you cannot find one, just ask someone. It's usually by the media.

BTW, is 20 for a Naruto season the lowest it's probably gonna get?

No, you just go to the kiosk, it looks like a normal home computer, and look up whatever you want there. It basically pulls everything from BestBuy.com, the only difference is it will show the discount (hopefully). You can pick it up in store, if its available, or have it shipped for around $2+
 
Here is my final haul, I need to stop going to best buy until all the anime is gone.

how was that packaged? Last time I ordered something it was badly beat up as they only used a padded envelope.

It was in a box about the size of a lunchbox (6" x 7" x 9") and it was shrink wrapped to a piece of carboard on either side. Then it was placed loose in the large box and it probably got shaken up diring shipping. The corners and sides all seem fine, though, and I don't hear any floating discs or anything, so I'm not too worried. I think this was a little too thick for a padded envelope.

My local store has Zeta Gundam, but not the larger collections. As such, it sells for $6 but you would be better off buying Set 1 and Set 2 instead, used, online. Much more cost-effective.
 
Grabbed Fullmetal Alchemist season 2 complete today, and returned the 4 sets I originally bought (season 1 parts 1&2, season 2 parts 1&2) since I found both new boxes.

Also put an order in on the Berserk complete box that's coming out next week, can't beat that for only $15.

Best Buy has an insanely detailed customer database system that tracks and cross references information and purchases across name, address, phone number, email address, credit card number, and Reward Zone numbers. And probably across other criteria as well. The ability to query by CC number is not taught unless you're in Customer Service dept, so it's not readily available to general employees who may need to look in purchase records (like Geek Squad).

Though purchase information is stored, I doubt there are (m)any automatic red flags aside from maybe too many no-receipt returns. I wouldn't think that unless there's an active investigation on you specifically that the POS (point-of-sale/cash register) would pop-up a blacklist notice, however if you're personally recognized by the staff/management as "overly taking advantage of their policy," they could decide to deny you service on their own whim. What constitutes abuse is entirely up to the individual management.

For what it's worth, I've done numerous return/re-buys w/ coupons w/ no issue at BBs where I used to live. Often times, I don't even bring in the item, and they just trust me not to run off between the return transaction and the re-do sale. Of course it greatly helps to build trust and reputation with the store staff. Come in often, buy lots of stuff. Don't be demanding, and be humble. Greet the yellow-shirt security guy when coming and acknowledge the floor staff, even if letting them know you can help yourself, ask the cashiers how they're doing. In short, grease the wheels with people skills. (Non-dick) Regulars always get treated well. The CS staff knew my face because I was always price-matching or buying override-necessitating clearance items, but they always were cheerful and helpful and greeted me before I would get to the counter despite me always losing them some money whenever I visited. YMMV, of course.
 
Picked up Coyote Ragtime Show complete and This Ugly yet beautiful world at the South Brunswick, NJ store. They were pretty cleaned out..but I grabbed these two for cheap, and the girlfriend picked up some stuff as well. They had a few Witchblade sets..a few more Coyotes..alot of the Afro Samurai stuff..some DBZ seasons..FMA sets..two Robotech Protoculture Collections..and I'm blanking on the rest. I normally don't say which stores I visit, but being as we've never been to this best, nor will we be going back(although the customer service was great! Cashier was actually friendly and willing to help).

I'm going back Saturday, will check for a kiosk. I was there already a couple times, but they had so much to buy i never needed the kiosk. I'll take a look around, let you guys know what i buy. I need Yu Yu Hakusho Season 4 :).
 
Wow, you guys who actually found 5 Centimeters Per Second in your BB are pretty lucky. Easily my favorite anime movie of all time.

I checked 6 of my local BB stores that are having the sale, and none of them had any copies.

In fact, I think the only time I've seen copies at any of my BBs was during N/A release (Summer 2008). Luckily, I picked up a copy during that visit (at full price $22), and I remember there were 2 copies left. But since then, I've never seen any more copies at any of my stores.
 
hmm i ordered two movies online through one of the sale stores in their kiosk to pick up at a local store (both in said in stock via their stock checker), but I just got an email saying they couldn't find one of the movies! I even stopped by there (too quick for the online order to go through, so I didn't pick anything up) and saw the dvd on the shelf! what the eff.

There were two listings for the movie online though, I guess I ordered the wrong one -_-
 
I got lucky at 2 Best Buys and managed to get the following Blu-rays at 50% off:

Freedom Box Set
Gunbuster vs. Diebuster Box Set
Samurai 7 Box Set

I used the method described in the thread by taking up Afro Samurai Season 1 on Blu Ray and having them ring that up first to show the 50%. As an addition to that, I also took one of the "50% off anime" blue placards they had in the area up to the counter with me and ask the clerk nicely if they following were ringing up 50% off. Both required manager approval, but the clerks actually backed me up.

Clerk: "These should be ringing 50% off and they are not."
Manager: "The Blu-rays are not eligible."
Clerk: "This one IS ringing up 50% off and the sign he brought up just says 50% off anime."
manager: "Hmmm, go ahead and do it."

Happened twice, I was shocked but pleasantly surprised. I was going to try my luck with Dead Space: Downfall, but I noticed it was on sale this week and wanted to make sure I didn't kill the deal with the box sets if they noticed Dead Space ringing up with the sale price. I may try it if I go back.

What you are describing is quite a bit different than the "Best Buy owes it to me" attitude. I'll add that those that do talk or complain their way into getting the BDs discounted, knowing full well that they aren't included, are being dishonest.

As for those of you saying that not including Bluray is false advertising, you're reading far too much into it. You don't go into Best Buy, find a tag in front of the Iron Man DVD showing it is on sale for $9.99 and immediately go pick up the Bluray disc and pitch a fit that it isn't ringing up at the sale price.

Yeah, I was actually at the store that is doing the 50% off sale. I used the kiosk to get to Best Buy's site, and when I found the DVDs I was looking for at the next closest store, they showed up as normal price. I even tried adding it to the cart, but it didn't deduct it there either. I wasn't about to log in and punch my CC info in if it wasn't going to come up 50% off.

I wasn't sure if there was something else I was supposed to do or not.

Just went to the kiosk in my Best Buy earlier today and ordered a movie called "The Place Promised in Our Early Days". I've wanted to see it for a while, it being made by the same people as "5 Centimeters Per Second", and it was discounted to $7.99 on the kiosk; ended up being $11 after tax and shipping. Not too bad. If only it got here faster.

Question: I actually bought the Collection, not knowing there was a smaller package that was cheaper. And after I found out, I had already opened the collection, so oh well. So I'm just wondering, Why would you rather have the bigger, more expensive Collection for Coyote Ragtime Show?

The Place promised in our early days is INCREDIBLY boring...i tried to get through have of it and it was like watching The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford...fell asleep at least 4 times...so just a friendly warning on that one

If you REALLY want to see one of Shinkai's good movies...watch Voices of a Distant Star or my personal favorite KAKURENBO...

I wouldn't mind getting 5 Centimeters Per Second or Elfen Lied, either. The Best Buys by me that are running the clearance still have a nice slection of anime, but don't have those two.
 
I don't know why people hate on The Place Promised in Our Early Days so much. I thought it was pretty good. It's slow-paced and mellow, but that's Makoto Shinkai for you. I thought it was better than Voices of a Distant Star, but all of his works are gold.

You might be a little disappointed if you've already seen 5 cm/s, though. I would recommend watching his works in chronological release order because his movies gradually get better and better. 5 cm/s should definitely be saved for last since it truly is his greatest work of art (so far).

I also wanted to note: Promised Place made me feel EXTREMELY nostalgic for some strange reason.

i agree with you some what. I went to the sale the first day and had to argue about blurays because the sign says all anime. bestbuy just changed it to 50% off all anime dvds on monday. So even though you say we knew i didnt know also show me something from corporate that says it was only dvds there was none until this past monday.
i didnt use the afro samurai thing but i did explain to one cashier why only afro samurai was ringing up 50%off . Because it is the only bluray anime listed as a anime in bestbuy f**ked system. i bought a couple of anime dvds that were ringing up as just dvd movies and not anime so i had to get manager for that.
On my reciept everything that needed to be corrected just said either bluray movie or dvd. But all the anime on my reciept that rang up 50%off had the word anime before the title , just like afrosamurai was listed as anime.

So in the end its best buy fault for having sh*tty system, not having correct signs that says what excluded,

1) Was it 100 miles one-way or round-trip?

2) When you say you "found" them, does that mean you didn't really look for any specific titles? Did you call that store ahead of time to check if they had your stuff or was it just luck that you happened to find 3 copies of that gem?

Cause I might be willing to drive 100 miles as well a store had more copies.

I was under the impression it had more content, was I wrong? I just checked BB's website and it lists something completely different under the episodes each DVD has. I'm confused now.

The Place Promised in Our Early Days is really cool. Sometimes its a little "huh?" but its a very beautiful film and mellow, like shiva said. I ordered it as well. I really love Voices of a Distant Star though, Im waiting for it to get out of backordered status so I can buy it. If not (if it doesnt arrive before the sale ends), I think Ill just order it anyway.

1. One-way. a PA store, I am from NJ.

2.This BB store doesn't put 5cm per second in anime section but when I searched for Spongebob dvds, I found 7 copies of 5cm p s sitting next to Spongebob season 5v1. Picked up 3(one for mine and 2 for friends). If anyone wants it, maybe I'll come back the store next week .
 
Both of the BBs on Long Island are pretty much cleaned out. I was hoping to get "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" CE but they didn't have it. They did have one last copy of the regular edition so I just bought that. Good enough I guess.

@_@ Oh my god, it must have been luck to find those copies... were the spongebob dvds located in a section adjacent to the anime section? Cause if not... then that's REALLY lucky!

Jeez, during the visits to my 6 BBs, I didn't even look at anything else in the store... just the anime section and whatever else was right next to the anime section. I might have missed some copies if they were put elsewhere... damn.

It's also kinda discouraging... cause even I did call some of the stores 50+ miles away from me, the employees wouldn't even know where to search if these copies where located in different sections. Gah!
