I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). 40 miles or so for Commack NY store. At that point, the savings on this sale start to shrink very quickly. (Thats a $6+ fuel surcharge.)
 
went to a kisok yesterday to order Shigurui and the price was $21.49 , half off the pre-order , then I go to cart to pay and then its full price again ? WTF ? The other dvds I knew that were coming up at half off did the same thing . If I go to another store that is doing the sale will there kisoks do the same thing or still be at the half off price ? any info is welcome and thanks
 
Since this sale started last Sunday, do you think there would still be anything good left? I mean, how well advertised is this sale?

I'm looking to pick up a few titles myself, and I don't want to bother if it the anime section looks it came from a Circuit City.

To anyone who went to BB this weekend: is your anime section cleaned out or does it look like it usually does?

i ended up returning most of the boxsets i bought for myself after i found out about http://thedubbedscene.blogspot.com. I don't really see myself watching these anime more then once and i really don't need to be wasting my money on stuff i can get for free. I ended up only keeping School Rumble and Afro Samurai.

Your best bet would be to look throughout this thread and mark down the series that people got for a song that you are interested in. Write every single one of them down, then hit your local store(s) that are running the sale. Once there, hunt down what you want.

But what if you can't find anything? Hit up the kiosk in the store and run searches on the remaining titles you want. If you luck out you'll find a few in stock and for low prices that way and still be able to come out ahead, even though it'll take some time to ship.

Not the best of approaches but there are still deals to be had with just a little extra effort. :)

Mine is pretty good, and occasionally something new is put out. Also, if you cant find what you want, try looking on the in store kiosk (the discount should show up).

I asked the same question many, many pages back, and someone transcribed it from one of the photos someone took of their haul. Unfortunately there's no more at the main Best Buy warehouses, so what's in stores should be all there'll ever be (at BB anyway). Earlier this week, I took advantage of the RZ Premier Silver customer service line and the guy looked everywhere he could for me, including competitor websites. Who knows, if you've qualified for Premier Black, maybe their actual concierge service has the pull and ability to look for it store by store and ship it to you.
 
well after spending $381.14 my wife put her foot down. No more for a while (well except for FMA season 2 which she graciously allowed me to get on Tuesday and maybe Samurai 7)

Ugh, problems with these kinda sales is it makes you want to buy more. Bought DBZ: Season 5 and watching it and realized how easy it is to waste a whole day watching it and still crave more.

Has anybody seen Kenichi S1P1 out early in any of the stores? BB's website says it's already in stores. In fact, every store I checked on the site has it... It's probably a glitch but I really hope they'll have it for half off on Tuesday. :pray:

Yeah, Kenichi has been out for a while, locally. I don't like series with Season 1 Part 1, Season 1 Part 2. I prefer a season set ,even if a bit more expensive, since it saves space. I'm thinking about returning Code Geass because of that.

good thind we all got in early for the sale cause i bought all the anime blurays. i just checked best buy website. and right in the anime section its 50% off anime dvds at select stores and it has the list of stores posted as well
 
I started off this sale so well. Just grabbed Akira on blu-ray plus Gurren Lagann and Bubblegum Crisis, though I returned Bubblegum Crisis (realized it was the Tokyo 2040 series and not the original). I thought I was done and my wallet was saved,

Then I went back for The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Cowboy Bebop. Also walked out with Chevalier D'Eon and Witchblade on a whim; more than I had wanted to spend on this sale, but hey, 50% is a good deal and I could always resell it later, right?

I'm still considering returning some series. I'm sure I won't watch EVERYTHING I bought, so it would be nice to nip it in the bud and get my money back now rather than try to sell them later, but I can't decide which ones to take back.

Quick (maybe stupid) question - when the DVD says the runtime is, say, 650 minutes, that includes the opening/closing credits and such, right? So the actual series is shorter?

I think it is safe to say that each episode is, with op/ed/next ep, etc, would tally around 24-25 minutes, so the actual episodes would be around 21 each, but if you consider the longer running series, (like the 650 total run time) chances are that you'll have loads of recap episodes, and the "previously on..." thing which may take up to 4-5 minutes on the long end...so short series, I'd say you have maybe 92% avg of actual content, and longer, maybe 80%...and there's my 2 cent

yeah its shorter they arent like movies. so alot of fast forwarding through the credits of each opening and ending credits plus some include preview of the next show , so you have to ffoward past that

That and because the dub is fucking terrible. I can't believe the choice for Lelouch. I don't think subs are superior just because they're subs, but they are definitely in the case of geass. bleh

I'd prefer that too, but right now FUNimation only licensed the first 25 (or 50) episodes of Kenichi. If these sets sell well, they'll release the last 25 episodes on DVD.

Unfortunately there's no more at the main Best Buy warehouses, so what's in stores should be all there'll ever be (at BB anyway). Finally I was able to score Akira,Gunbuster vs Diebuster, Afro Samurai Resurrection on Bluray disc for 50% off and other anime dvds. I love the Bestbuy at Manahawkin NJ. I spent totally $1000 for this sale until today.


 
good haul... my local best buys are denying me of any blu-rays now management is denying to accept it stating, yes it's anime, but the sale doesn't cover blu.... even though 1 let me grab freedom at 50% off and nothing on paper states blu is exempt.... i would love ghost in the shell 2 as well, but NONE of my local best buys have it :(

i will try again and again though....
 
Yeah, looks like the blu-ray party is over. I tried to grab a copy of Samurai 7 a day or two ago; picked up with Haruhi and Afro Samurai BD, hoping that when Afro Samurai showed up half off I could show my receipt from getting Akira at 50% a few days before and convince them, but no go.

Oh well, not really that interested in any of the BDs except Akira, anyway.

I feel for you because I had the same problem on Saturday. So here is my story.

I went to the BB in Chino Hills CA #846. I found a copy of Akira on blu that I had been looking for. I grabbed it and Ghost in the Shell 2, and Samurai 7 also on blu. So I go to check out and all 3 do not ring up at 50% off. The manager comes over and I tell her that the signs posted say 50% off anime. She said that she would have to go "look something up". So about 10 min later she comes back and starts giving me 2 BS excuses. She said that the signs were located in the regular DVD section and not in the blu section and so they were not included. Then she tries this that "she looked it up on the computer and it said that the blu were not included". I explain to her again that the posted signs do not say anything about any exclusions it said 50% ALL ANIME and to show me this "thing on the computer" to which she refused (big shock because it was pure BS). This goes back and forth and I tell her that by not honoring the posted sale or price is against CA law. I also mention that the Long Beach CA and Carson CA stores overrode the price and that Afro Samurai season 1 on blu did ring up at 50% off (sadly they didn't have a copy to scan). She kept saying that I was not listening to her and I asked for a higher manager.

Folks this is where it gets really fun. This "manager" comes over and the first words out of his mouth is not "how can I help you" or "what is the problem". NOOOOO it's I'm not going to override the price and the sale did not include the blu. This guy was a real @$$hole and and a real tool because it was very obvious that the girl told this tool to come over and get rid of me because I was right. So I get this jerks card and walk out.

So still pissed I call CS on the 800 number and tell the CS guy about the problem the bitch and jerk that I had to deal with. So he puts me on hold for about 10 - 15 min. He comes back on and said that he called the store and that they were not going to honor the sale. So he tells me to go back into the store and buy the disc and he will send me a gift card for 50% of the difference. I was very obvious that this guy had the same problem with the idiots running this store. He said that if I see them I should not gloat to them about what he was offering me. He again apologized to me about the problem that I had at the store.

Sorry to be long winded but now that CC is gone BB previous crappy customer service is going get worse. The only thing that I can tell you is to stand your ground and don't give up. Call corporate and complain about these jerks who run these stores. Fill out the customer survey online. Call your local Better Business Bureau and complain. It's fucking BS that they are not honoring this sale on bluray and against the law in most states.
 
went to my local bb on sunday to return/rebuy the sets i bought with the chex coupon. was only allowed to apply 1 coupon so that was a total fail. browsed the anime section and noticed they removed the 50% off all anime shelf tag, hmmm. found a lone afro samurai blu i've been wanting to pick up since the start of the sale and was able to use a coupon on that purchase. afro samurai blu for 6.99 made my day.

Agreed on all fronts. Those DBZ box sets are both cheap and freaking addictive. I picked up seasons 6 & 7 thanks to this sale.

I went back and picked up The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya earlier today. If anime was priced like this all the time I'd buy more.
 
Wow folks, quit being self-righteous jerks. Bluray is NOT part of this sale, with one exception. I asked at my local store before giving it a try and the clerk checked with the manager, who showed me an email that was sent out from corporate indicating such. The stores should know.

If you can't talk your way into getting 50% off something not included in the sale, don't take it out on the staff that know better.
 
Don't take it out on the BB employees and make yourself look like a jerk if you can't get the blu rays half off. I got denied at a BB but I didn't have any problems getting my blu's at another store. Picked up Akira, Freedom, Ghost in the Shell 2, Gunbuster vs. Diebuster, Afro Samurai S1, Vexille, and Samurai 7 blu rays half off. Thanks BB-
 
The sign says ALL anime half off. I only had trouble at one BB with getting the blu rays half off. The other 5 stores I went to I had no problems. Ended up with Ghost in the Shell 2, Akira, Freedom, Gunbuster vs Diebuster, Vexille, Afro Samurai S1, and Samurai 7 on blu ray.
BTW who has spent the most on this sale? I'm in for about $425 or so-

I dont want to know I have gone 4 times to 3 stores so I spent more then I imagined! The only thing I am debating now is more DragonBall Z, any diehard fans want to chime in? I have season one and two, should I get more? Are the movies worth it, any must see there too? Just wondering if this show avoids the usual anime filler phenomenon or if I should chance more seasons. Early ones are not so easily found but I am tempted to look.

I think I'm going to shoot for a Blood+ boxset but then I ABSOLUTELY MUST call it quits... okay and maybe I'll order the Speed Grapher Collection from the kiosk too.
 
When I brought items to check out with girl cashiers, I always got rejecting for 50% off anime on Bluray but with young guy cashier, he did the 50% off on Blu without asking.
