I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). Damn, mine won't give Bly ray anime for half off. If anyone could get me samurai 7 on blu ray I would love you forever and pay you back plus shipping of course
 
Checked out the list and every best buy i can think of in the area is on it. Kind of depressing actually since anime is apparently not doing as well as it use to, and that is after Best Buy stormed the area crushing places like Suncoast into oblivion.

Actually, I have no clue. I figured I was getting lucky with the Blu-Ray sales, so I should go for it. If I watched it and didnt like it I could resale it for a profit...

Anyways, it looks like Ill be going back tomorrow to get The Girl Who Leapt through time, apparently its really good...

So, after talking about other options of stuff to pick up (Le Chevalier D'Eon, Samurai 7) it seems that most of it has been cleared out of my best buy that has the sale.

there were like 6 Le Chevalier D'Eon series sets when i was there this morning, I bought the 3rd to last Witchblade and the 2nd to last Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya... that stuff is all gone now according to the online inventory... looks like they got cleaned out real quick.

YMMV. From the looks of it, you'll have to get them to override it by telling them about the sale, and it's up to them whether they do it or not. Not sure if that's all BluRay's, but my store didn't have Afro Samurai Resurrection on blu-Ray so i didn't bother asking.
 
Checked out the Loveland, CO store earlier today. 50% signs were up, and I had no problems getting discounts on what I purchased:

Gantz Complete Collection: $36
Elfen Lied: $16
Cowboy Bebop Remix: $20

I almost picked up the Ergo Proxy box set, but I figured I was already spending enough. I picked up Gantz blind, since it looked like something I might be interested in, but it's going back if I hear bad things about it. Anyone have any opinions on it?

Oh, I also saw the Freedom Blu Ray box set there, and I'm guessing at Loveland you wouldn't have a problem with getting an override on it, so if anyone's interested..
 
For those of you who are curious about Freedom on Blu-ray, content-wise, I wouldn't say it's that great. It's rather short and while it does not drop the ball somewhere in-between like a lot of longer-running series, the ending is a bit dull and doesn't have too much replay value for a second viewing. Then again, it all depends on your tastes. If you're someone who likes shonen titles, you should definetely skip it. The animation is definitely great and it's an amazing BD release, but not worth $50+ IMHO.

I think I'll come back and get Black Lagoon and Melancholy of Haruhi.
 
Only thing I would've considered springing for... Black Cat Boxed Set $25, was nowhere to be found despite the inventory system showing 2. No Slayers, which sucked. I was hoping I could round out my Slayers collection with some dusty old Slayers movie collections I hadn't found for pennies on Amazon Marketplace.

I keep forgetting whether it was Shana or Nanoha that's the "actually badass magical girl series" or whatever. I saw a lot of Shana, but I passed.

Was tempted by Haruhi but I figure I am not quite wapanese enough for that. Also tempted by Trinity Blood but I remembered that the series was as terrible as the art was good, so I dodged a bullet there.

I DID walk away with Sneakers, Spaceballs, and Clue for $7 each. Almost got Army of Darkness for $10 but I figured I could find it at $7 with enough luck. Kinda ironic. Go in for animes, leave with normal DVDs.

The prices are good as it's fairly new releases (6 months or so) and you currently won't find them cheaper with such ease anywhere else. If you can wait longer surely you can get them even cheaper, but the prices was close enough for me to bite on several that I will watch very soon and many times over the years. Your reasoning is why I did not buy Death Note or Bleach, as I don't think I'd watch those more than once every few years and are currently too high for me to purchase as I know I'll see them at flea markets for $10.00 a set in 2 or 3 years time.

I tend to stick to series with a lot of action. Or mecha based. But I understand what you're saying, I'm pretty pick on what I buy (especially with the economy being unstable).
 
I went to the BestBuy in Northglenn CO and had no problem getting:

They even had a few tiny signs saying that Anime was 50%. Thanks for the heads up.:applause:
 
So much for this news making my day. Went to the Muncie, IN store and it had been picked over pretty heavily. Mainly went in looking for stuff like Rahxephon or Excel Saga, but all that was left were things like Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist and a couple Ghost in the Shells. Disappointing day, to say the least. They did have the little 50% off signs though, which is nice.
 
I'm gonna go back in 30 mins to see how wiped out the section is... judging by the online inventory, it's pretty hammered.
 
I went to two stores, one had signs advertising the sale and I picked up most of what I bought there. The second one didn't have any signs but titles rang up half off at register except for My Hime Otome Zwei, which I would have missed had I not been looking at the screen as the cashier was ringing up the dvds. A manager had to correct the pricing error but made a mistake and applied the 50% to all the titles, even the ones that rang up correct. It took a bit more time in getting the whole mistake straightened out.

I almost bought The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, but I'm still holding out for a possible future release of it on Blu-ray.

I was only able to get 50% off Akira on a technicality. I argued that the little signs saying that all anime was 50% was just that, all anime, not just anime on DVD. If the sale were meant to be 50% off only on DVD titles, then Afro Samurai season 1 shouldn't be half off (despite other anime Blu-ray titles not receiving the discount as well). I must've spent about 20 minutes arguing to get the price cut, and the manager gave in in the end and went ahead and gave me the discount. He gave me a stern warning about signs in each section pertaining only to that section.

But I got Akira for $17.49, so I'm happy. :)

My Best Buy tried to refuse me too, on Samurai 7 and Gunbuster/Diebuster Blu-Ray.

After requesting to talk to the manager, the blue-shirted guy said "I AM the Manager." I wasn't about to give up any ground, because the sign said "All Anime 50% Off", it didn't mention any exclusions. What happened though was that I also had the Afro Samurai Season 1 Blu-Ray for purchase. It was tagged $19.99, but it rang up $9.99. This prompted a black-shirted manager to look into it, and he applied the 50% off. :bouncy:

If I was refused then I might have proceeded to give Weights & Measures a call.
 
Trumbull, CT. pickings are kinda slim from what I saw with very few boxsets / complete series. The aisle consisted mostly of volumes of some the series mentioned above.

I had Trinity in my hand but put it back in favor of:

Maybe a couple copies of Black Blood Brothers since people here seem to want it. I'll see what i can do.

Any recomendations on good mecha based series? I'm not a big anime person, as I've only really watched Gundam (love it, but have only seen three of the sub series).
 
a word of advice... after first checking the online stock status of some items before I went back to the best buy near me, many of the titles listed as sold out were in fact still on the shelf. so maybe you can get lucky even if you check it online.

I decided to pick up Le Chevalier D'eon on my trip back, there was one copy left and it was hidden in back of a bunch of other stuff along with Witchblade, probably someone who wanted to come back for it.

I also tried Afro Samurai Resurrection Blu-Ray, but it rang up full price and I didn't argue, I figure eventually I can get it on the cheap.
 
I got Vexille on Blu-ray and Ghost in the shell 2 steelcase. I had to argue, not that hard, to get vexille Half off. I may go back for Tenchi Muyo Ry-oki. Is the Xenosaga anime good?

Uh, look into Full Metal Panic! (there's also Fumoffu and The Second Raid). Mecha based, lots of action, has a lot of comedy stuff in it. But there are a lot of school life in it.

Fafner in the Azure / Neon Genesis Evangelion. Both are excellent series, I think they're so much more deeper than Gundam, as it deals with the psychological effects of combat and war on the characters.

Thats about all I can think of, at least what I would recommend.

Can you stand watching those horror movies where you're constantly yelling at the screen because they're idiots about to die because of their stupidity?

Because most of the animated Gantz series is them holding guns and not shooting.
 
Guys just as long as the bluray box doesn't look like a bluray, you should be ok. Had no issues with the freedom and gunbuster/diebuster set. I was also told that there was a memo that came out that said blurays were excluded from the sale. Not sure how true that is but take it for what it's worth.
 
Thanks for the heads up speedy! For anyone in the WNY area, the BB's in clarence and walden galleria have a pretty good selection. My haul includes: Evangelion complete collection, RahXephon Grand Canon collection, Outlaw Star collection, Nadesico movie, My Hime complete, Spirited Away, Tsukihime Complete, Samurai 7 complete, Shakugan no Shana complete, and Melancholy of Haruhi S. complete.

I also grabbed both afro samurai box sets although these are not part of the sale...

@Teqonix : Gantz is pretty interesting but BL is right on with the horror movie reference.

I picked up Blood +, School Rumble Season 1 & 2, Ouran Host club and Fruits basket. Going to go back tomorrow and try to pick up Freedom and Gunbuster.
 
I bought Mushi-Shi today, but I have no idea if I'll like it. Can anyone tell me whether it's any good and what it's like?
