I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). Anyway, I'm actually wondering if I should keep or return Fruits Basket. I can't really decide whether I'll like it or not, and if I don't I'd rather not take the chance of opening it. Anyone have any knowledge on the series? Is it anything like Kanon, Air, or Clannad?

finally hit up the Kenosha location on Tuesday. Ended up buying Gurren Lagann 1 & 2 and picked up Cowboy Bebop again (wish I didn't sell it the first time).

Also if anyone cares, friend of mine checked if Ultraman was considered part of the clearance and sure enough, it rang up at 50% off. I've been getting my money's worth when I paid full price so it is definitely well worth it at $22.50 plus tax. Wish I could find Super Robot Red Baron or Iron King, would love to pick them up at half off

Here's what I'll probably stop with (unless you guys have suggestions on Anime I shouldn't be without-- I'm open to suggestions) Also, as a side note, I found a store with Samurai Deeper Kyo for 59.99 before discount so I ordered right now on the site-- 30 is worth it for the GBA game alone, so hopefully there's no hassles with the adjustment.

Yep, Gilbert. Good store. They didn't pull penny guides, FYI, although it seems like they either sold some or pulled some. I noticed some old drops and snagged a few of the new drops. Still plenty left if you're into that sort of thing, you know, ruining your life with penny guides like I'm in the process of doing.

But it seems odd there are DVD exclusions-- and I've been to a total of four Best Buys. No one but the Gilbert store did it. I guess I kind of see Mega Man being excluded since it's partially an American effort, but what was Inuyasha season 2 doing in that rack? More importantly, why did your Neon Genesis need an override? Odd, but the sale is still a potent one so it's all good. Add me to the list of those wondering if this sale will hit 75% off, although I'm not even close to holding my breath.

Thanks very much. I'll call around in the morning; it's worth a shot. I've been so out of the loop w/ anime that I didn't realize Makoto Shinkai made another movie. From the excitement being generated here, it looks like it's worth traveling and picking up even at full price.

Gurren Lagann, that also applies to the guy asking about a good action anime that would also make him cry (you'll at least get sad). The third and final part isn't out till the 17th though. Of everything I've ever seen, it's a tie between that and Samurai X for anime that everyone should see, but I sincerely doubt you'll find Samurai X at any Best Buy still.

Going back tomorrow for round two against my wallet, and this time it's personal!

They had a decent selection on Monday morning, probably about 2/3 or 3/4 of what I was looking for, and you can see my haul back on page 18. Unfortunately for you I didn't even glance at their blu-rays, and I don't think I saw Akira on DVD either.

Yeah, I mean its a bit like those...funny...a lot of dialogue (not boring though). I think you should give it a try, if you don't like it...sell it on eBay for about the same amount you paid for it and its just like you rented it...

Go to the kiosk in-store or buy it online. If you buy it online you will have to get them to either refund you 50% of the price or just return it...and buy it again (which they dont like very much I hear). The kiosk is better because apparently the discount shows up and there's no trouble!

I don't quiet get the highlighted area. If I bought it online how would I get a 50% off refund before the item came out later then march? Am I on the right track in assuming I can pre-order something that releases in, say April and get it 50% off because of the deal? The 50% off shows up on the in-store kiosk?

im 99% sure your just messing with me :) but you do know they came out with a dead space animated movie on blu ray right, like i said its very far from the hardcore anime stuff everyone else is buying but when picking it up with the 2 afro samurai blu rays i got them to give that to me half off too

Oooh...I see...I guess I was thinking more along the lines of Berserk, which comes out March 17th. For things that come out later, I have no clue...but I think your best bet would be to look at the instore kiosk. (yes, the 50% shows up at the in-store kiosk, according to a couple of people on this thread. Ill be going tomorrow to have a look myself.)

Good stuff. I'll be sure to check today and see what it says. Hopefully I can get some cheap prices on some April releases (Kanon Complete, Air TV Complete..)

Any idea if 5 Centimeters Per Second is even on Bestbuy.com ? I can't seem to find it anywhere on the site. Have they removed it from the system?

did have pokemon movie 11 ,but was not half off so return it.

set 3 still half off , but ONE piece set 4 the preorder was

not this one. they some games and dvds that Dartmouth BB does

not. What? so this past Thurs. to the Dartmouth BB and sure

enought the kiosk there show the ONE piece box sets 4 the

preorder one is half there so order both of them. ONE piece box

sets 3 had to shiped to my house and ONE piece box set 4 I pick

store pick up in Dartmouth BB. so now spended last of my money

at BB. and spend $100 on anime sale.

It's not. That release has been OOP for quite a few years now and even when it was released it was short lived.

It's alright. I've watched both seasons 1 and 2 and wouldn't wholeheartedly recommend it unless you go nuts for Kugimiya Rie.
 
I just went to the Garner, NC store and picked up Elfen Lied, Ergo Proxy, Najica Blitz Tactics and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time LE for $75 w/ $5 RZ discount. I couldn't help mahself. :)

I already checked on Air a few days ago - no sale. It only works on anime that's being released by the end of the sale period.
 
Finally went and got Lucky Star LE 1-4 and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time LE.

The shelves weren't emptied as feared (lol) so I might go again this weekend. Oh and is Akira blu-ray in a different section? Don't think I saw it with the other anime titles =/

I bought half of my box sets at a non-sale store and went to a sale store and had them price adjust. Doing this I got season 1 and 2 of Ghost in the Shell, the complete 1st season of Full Metal Alchemist and part 1 and 2 of season 2, and season 1 (part 1 and 2) and season 2 (part 1) of Shin Chan. Try this method if your sale store only has half of what you want.

I wouldn't wait for a drop to 75%...remember the HD-DVD clearance. They could always just ship the leftovers to the stores that still sell anime.

No store within 75 miles of me (7 total) has Akira Blu-ray in stock! One media manager said it wasn't released yet!

And should I get FMA? I watched half of it years ago but never finished. I saw the S1 box set and "half season" sets...which left me confused. Looking at BB's site, S2 is being released on the 10th. So should I just wait for that and get S1+S2 at the same time? hmm.. :whistle2:k
 
The sale stores probably won't be getting new stock...you could always buy at another store and try for the price adjustment at the sale store. It's only $10-15 difference though so I just went ahead and bought the two parts of season 2.

at first only afro samurai came up as half off. so then i told cashier sign says all anime. If somethings not included it should be on that sign, so people are not wasting 30-40 minutes looking through the ton of anime and deciding what to get only to find out its not included.
i then proceeded to ask for manager. after hassle i told them either you give me 50% off or im gonna set it off in here:twoguns:

i was already kinda annoyed cause i drove 40 minutes to the only bb doing the
deal.
also afro samurai rings up 50% auto so the only thing i notice was that for some reason in bestbuy system some anime are not listed as anime but just standard movies i noticed this on my reciept . that the 50%off applies to all anime but in the system not all anime is listed as such and thats why its not taking the percentage off. which i explained to the manager when i showed her the reciepts all of the items she had to override are listed as movies not anime as i went back to pay instore for shingir bluray 25.00 since you can preorder in store too:twisted:

all the three stores i went to had the signs saying 50% off all anime you just have to stand your ground. even two of the stores i went to had the blu ray anime in that section by the signs. so no mateer what the cashier tells you tell them u want the manager , if they dont give it too you walk them over there get the sign it does not say 50%off select anime, it says all anime. and make sure your talkin to a manager cause those bestbuy workers are a pain the cashier kept tellin me no, so i said get the manager over here got what i wanted at a price truely slick
For those that dont know you can go instore and order the item to be picked up at another bestbuy that has it in stock just have to have csr do it to get the 50% off

Do Geneon box sets always get shrink wrapped loosely with an ugly seam on the side facing the disc opening?

I picked up Fate/Stay Night and Ergo Proxy -- both looked kinda rewrapped, but probably not (another FSN looked the same way). Not that it should matter, but I usually keep the plastic on as a dust cover and cut an opening for access.

There wasn't much of a selection that interested me at the BB I went to so it might have been picked over already. The Mushi-Shi complete boxset thinpak looked really flimsy. If anyone is getting it, you might want to spend about $5 more total for the individual volumes (1-6) from rightstuf. It's a clearance bin item at only $5 each right now.

Especially great if you like having all the extras and full size DVD cases. One of the discs had the Japanese director speaking with the VA for Ginko that I don't think is in the complete box set which was condensed to 4 discs.

School Rumble is really funny. Its a romantic comedy but zanzy comedy. More in line with Azumanga Daioh than say Air or Kanon. I think it works for men and women since when I first started watching and reading it I thought it ponders to much to women, but there are some fanservice elements and I'd recommend it for 20 since that's what I bought it for too.

School Rumble is VERY good. VERY funny. I watched all of it on Hulu.

I managed to find Samurai 7 on Blu-ray at a BB that isn't doing the sale. What's the best way for me to get the 50% off, Price-adjust or have the store do a return rebuy?

Was there still a god amount left at Seekonk? I'll have to check on Friday when I'm in the area. FYI, North Dartmouth still had quite a bit left, but it sounds like it's mostly similar titles you bought.
