Here's the listing of the 400+ stores scheduled to run this sale:

From ICV2.com news:

"Best Buy’s Anime Close-out Stores March 1st to 21st

Published: 02/20/2009, Last Updated: 02/23/2009 04:45am

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). The sale will run from March 1st to March 21st and allow these 460+ stores to reduce their SKU count dramatically, as part of the chain’s move to concentrate its anime efforts in stores where anime has performed best.

Here's a comprehensive article on Best Buy's new ANIME Strategy as mentioned at the top of this thread:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-02-20/best-buy-to-change-dvd-strategy

Finalized list: here.

I've got 2 stores in my area so hopefully I'll find some stuff of interest.

Also, animaniac provided this coupon which can be used with this sale:
Well, it might say it is unavailable for in store pick up, but you could just have it delivered to your house. If a store only has one copy of something it will not be available for in store pickup, something like 3 or more and it will (maybe just 2 I dont know).
Well, when I use the kiosk, and it says 1 in stock, it will still show up Green instead of Red, when something is out of stock. It's usually pretty accurate.
I think since it's clearance, they might not care enough to update the systems.

I wanted this one series, but I forgot the name. It was one of those 13 episodes series for 30 bucks.
It has like different colored squares on the back, and one the front, some girl with pigtails in an orange sweater with a gun.

Hello,

We are aware of an audio problem affecting some units of the Afro Samurai: Resurrection Blu-ray(tm) release. While it was intended that the audio on this title be English Dolby TrueHD 5.1, it has come to our attention that the audio track on some of these units is a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. We wish to rectify this issue with any consumers who believe they may have purchased one of these units.

Thank you for your receipt and address information. It will take several weeks to get the corrected copies made and shipped, but your name is on our list.

Thanks,

Hi everyone,
I am totally new in my exploration of Anime. While I own over 1000 movies, including HD DVD and Blus, I will not likely buy anything from this sale, simply because I am not knowledgeable about the different themes, types, etc. However, I love to try out new genres, and my cinema tastes vary and are quite ecclectic.

I am 33, and tend to gravitate towards "heavy duty", meaty films, and tend to check in or post here, regarding Blu & DVD deals at B&M and online stores.

I know one type of Anime (as is the case with any cinema), will not necessarily appeal to everyone equally. A few years ago I saw Princeess Mononoke, and didn't enjoy it. I saw 5 Cm, and did like it, but I didn't really have anything to which to compare it.

So, can anyone provide some suggestions on what types of Anime to check out? I really don't think I'd be into the "silly" type, I've seen snippets of. I may like space, "end of the world" and other more serious themed series, but again, I really have no idea. I know this doesn't belong in this sales thread, but I would appreciate any suggestions you have, on shows/movies that you would recommend for an anime newbie, to get acquainted with the genre. You can PM me. Thanks for your time and good luck with your BB hunts- know it's awesome when you get good "scores"!:)
So, at the end of the sale, does that mean anything left will be shipped to other stores?
From my understanding, any remainders will probably be returned to BB.com's warehouse.

All stores will be selling only the Top 25 Anime titles.

just look for yourself. http://anime-media.com/category/

With all honesty.

You, being a 33 yr old person, bought 1,000 movies (including HD and Blus) and didnt like Mononoke.

I think you have the capacity to be knowledgeable and do your own research about it [ex: check online stream (youtube), browse the web or rent].

If you have done it buying 1000 movies (multiple genres) its easy for you to check out a specific genre which is Anime (you started it with Mononoke and CM).

I'm gonna stop at worst buy on the way home from work tonight and use the kiosk to order me some Macross. Can you order back-ordered stuff from the kiosk and still get the 50% off to work?

Sorry buy I'm still confused about the kiosk. Are they those computers at the end of movie section? Those look like they're for employees only, can I just go up and start ordering or do I need an employee to do it?

There is customer kiosk labeled above the pc at some of best buys I been to.
Okay second run, lol. Snagged Cowboy Bepop box set, Mushi Shi and Chevalier Deon. Still looking for earlier Naruto's. If anyone spots say Naruto Uncut Box Set 4: The Broken Seal I be willing to pay or trade if you need anything that is not in your area. I guess Cased Closed Seasons 1 and 2 are too old not even discounted in the kiosk of a discounted store.

Tons of people ask this in the thread, but I've only found one response -

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=5574852&highlight=freedom#post5574852

For that matter, that's really the only opinion I can find anywhere on the net, with the qualifier that I've only tried to search while I happen to be on a computer that is behind a web filter. Well, there are a couple on Amazon, but I never trust any Amazon reviews when there's only a couple because I've found that in that case they're generally all on one or the other extreme (super love or super hate).

I'm still personally debating on whether I want to pick it up or not. Seems like it has a great pedigree, but $50 is a lot of dough.

i found areview here if you go to amazon you can watch a trailer

FREEDOM BLU-RAY BOX DISC SET LIMITED EDITION

Filed under: REVIEWS — activea @ 1:55 pm

FREEDOM.jpg

THE STORY IN A NUT SHELL:
23rd Century, the Moon. Humankind has migrated to the moon after a great climate disaster caused by a space station falling into Earth made it inhabitable. The moon base originally as an outpost for Mars terra forming has become a utopian city for humankind, where everyone lives in tranquility but are guarded and watched over closely by the guidance council of the Republic of EDEN. Since then, no one has ever looked back to Earth, or at least that is everyone is led to believe until a brash 15-year old boy named Takeru made a discovery that could expose the clandestine brought by EDEN. A secret that is so troubling that Takeru is willing to take and embark on a journey and risk his life to learn the truth about Earth, to meet with the Earth Girl on the picture that he discovered on the lunar surface, and to expose the lies that EDEN has set forth to its people.

REVIEW IN THE MATTER:
This is FREEDOM’s second foray into high-definition, as it originally came out exclusively on HD DVD hybrid format until the demise of the format in the market. As it made the leap to Blu-ray, the limited box set now includes FREEDOM SEVEN, the final episode of the series, and the only one that is over 25 minutes long (45 minutes).
This all-original series is a promotional anime for Nissin Cup Noodles’ 35th Anniversary in 2006. You can say that FREEDOM is a seven-episode infomercial for the dry noodles packed in Styrofoam. During the progression of the show, you will see the product from time to time. If this is an infomercial for a product, this is the best darn commercial I’ve ever seen.
The story starts with a hook, line and sinker, as it has ability to tease you thanks to its cliffhangers. The story changes gear as it progresses and more drama and comedy were added to the fold while it sets the story up for the final episode, where every questions in the story are answered.
FREEDOM is directed by Shuhei Morita of Kakurenbo fame, and the CG visual he created in the series is visually stunning. The city of EDEN has a Blade Runner type environment with a less dark tone, and obviously there are also some other aspects that Director Morita took from Western sci-fi films to incorporate it to the world of his latest project. His visual adaptations, along with the story plot of FREEDOM, make it one the best original sci-fi anime that has come out in recent years in anime.
IN TECHNICAL TERMS:
The Blu-ray version of FREEDOM is everything what you would expect from an all CG anime, sporting a 1080p resolution, and compared to the twin-format standard version it came in originally, it has no comparison even when up-scaled. This version also comes with Dolby TrueHD 5.1, and it enhances the overall experience, as the sound placement is in check and not overpowering. The limited edition also comes with English dubbed on Dolby TrueHD sound. However, after watching FREEDOM in its original language, it was somewhat hard to get into the English version. But the English production did a valiant effort to match the voice with the characters and story script.
FEATURETTE:
The limited edition also comes with a galore of added features. One that stands out the most is the new prologue created for the box set. Here you will how it all get started with Takeru, Kazuma, and Biz. Note the prologue is only in Japanese (verified with Bandai Visual USA). Other short anime that came with the box set are Message from the Characters, Another Vehicle Race, which combines 3D racers from the show and actual street of Japan, and the short Mars terra forming animation, FREEDOM: The Hope.
Other features are the trip and experience of Director Shuhei Morita and series planner Dai Sato to Anime Expo 2007 and the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. A two-part discussion about the show from the director and series planner, and a documentary about the history of space flight from a Japanese perspective that is very informative.
Of course, to top it all off, the usual TV commercials and the FREEDOM Episode Digest wraps this galore of special features.
The packaging is also one of the best I’ve seen in Blu-ray. The box comes with an opaque designer plastic that protects the art box itself and the four black disc containers. It is the same design as the Japanese version. To top it of, an exclusive 28-page FREEDOM manga is included in the set. For the price, some might find this box set at a steep price, however, for a MSRP of #139.98, and if you want to finish the journey, it is well worth it.
CASE IN POINT:

You, being a 33 yr old person, bought 1,000 movies (including HD and Blus) and didnt like Mononoke.

I think you have the capacity to be knowledgeable and do your own research about it [ex: check online stream (youtube), browse the web or rent].

If you have done it buying 1000 movies (multiple genres) its easy for you to check out a specific genre which is Anime (you started it with Mononoke and CM).
You could have spent less time and have been less of a jerk just by making a few suggestions . Whats wrong with asking people who enjoy anime to make a few suggetions ?

Also Enci BB was stocked until yesterday when i came across a fellow fan who bought a TON of movies . It is now almost empty besides some DBZ sets .

Yeah, I'm also confused on the whole Kiosk thing. Do all Best Buy's have them? I've seen the computers that the employees use, but I always figured that customers couldn't touch those.

How does the whole thing work. Do I find something I'm looking for, and they'll ship it to that store? Or do they ship it to my house? I'm confused.

Not all stores have Kiosks. If you look the screen, it has a search box that you type what ever you want, then it takes you to a website similar to BB.com, but prices reflect in-store.

-Also, Is Avatar considered anime In-store? It is on BB.com.

Xage-I have researched online and have added several Anime series to my Netflix queue. I've also asked several family members and friends, who are into Anime. Since there are many people here shopping for Anime, I thought I'd ask for additional opinions, as prior to this, I had no knowledge of Anime. As with other movies, there are many different types of Anime, so it makes sense I would ask actual actively posting enthusiasts what they think, since they collect, and not just rely on some listing at a website. No need to be so hostile.

IMO, Naruto and Bleach are generic. They drag out a simple story, but I still watch it :X I don't know if you like that. The recent one's I've seen and enjoyed are Cowboy Bebop, and Scrapped Princess.

AKIRA if you can find it my top 5 maybe num 1

Perfect Blue is always my first recommendation for "anime for non anime watchers." If you're into suspense/horror at all, it is wonderful (I wouldn't personally call it horror, but that seems to be the label it gets stuck with most often).

Akira is fantastic, but it gets a bit crazy at the end with the storyline, leaving a "WTH?" type feeling with many people. Probably my favorite anime overall, but I recognize it's not for just anyone.

Spirited Away is also a great choice. All three of these recommendations are movies; I'll leave it to somebody else to recommend series, as I'm not huge on those, and most of the ones I like I wouldn't particularly consider good for newcomers.

Well, I recommend Cowboy Bebop. It has only small amounts of silliness (which primarily revolve around the Ed character). However, it has a very good blend of action, drama, comedy and it does have a futuristic setting that does have space elements in it. I personally think it is the best anime to show someone in regards to an introduction into anime.

I second that. Cowboy Bebop was my first series-- before that, I had only watched Anime films. Cowboy Bebop is fantastic for newbies because it does include that forementioned silliness, but not overly done as to turn off people who are making their first impressions about the anime genre.

I just don't know about this sale.
After stopping in at my local BestBuy, I noticed that most of the shows were horribly priced. I only like a few animes, Full-Metal Alchemist being one. So I looked at the price tag, knowing it'd be half off...25 dollars for 4 episodes, half of that is still somewhat overpriced.

I was just somewhat stunned, I never imagined anime to be so expensive. Needless to say, I walked out with nothing, even though I kinda wanted the complete collections of Ghost in the Shell and Evangelion...Both I like, but they were like, 55 and 80 respectively. (half off, of course)

Meh, to each their own...To me, something I can watch freely on Adult Swim isn't worth that price.

I just wanted to point out to everyone that the prices may be lackluster for some of you. They sure were for myself.

Oh, you can get 25 episodes of Full-Metal Alchemist for $25.
You don't like Anime. That's all.

If you liked 5 Centimeters per Second, you should probably check out Makoto Shinkai's earlier works: "Voices of a Distant Star" and "The Place Promised in Our Early Days."

I think you'll get near universal recommendation for Cowboy Bebop. In (very) short, it's an episodic series about a misfit crew of space bounty hunters (more like wild west or noir) whose dark pasts sometimes catch up to them, leading to more personal tangents. It should appeal to a lot of people normally turned off by anime because it's not super-anything: not super-cute, not super-gory/violent, not super-philosophical. Heck, even my mom got hooked way back when [adult swim] first aired the series while I was doing my homework late at night.

If you like a good mystery, I recommend Case Closed (aka Detective Conan). Sure, it's a light-hearted, goofy kids' show, but it's got a good heart and is actually intelligent in how they piece together the case. It's generally not some crazy deus ex machina, so you can play along, too.

Wouldn't Avatar the Last Airbender fall under anime too? I've always been surprised at how expensive the series sets were.

Buying individual DVDs is for the REAL enthusiast, for reasons you noted; personally, I can't imagine spending that much money on a series. Box sets are the way to go, and even then I pretty much only buy them during half off sales or better.

Still, those prices aren't TOO bad; at half off, the two series you mentioned would be about $27.50 and $40, and with probably around 10 hours each it's not super exorbitant. Still on the expensive side, but it's the price of being a fan, I guess.

Plus, you can't get the subbed versions on Adult Swim. That's very important for a lot of people.

Old man moment:

Back in my day when anime was first hitting DVD, discs used to only have 3 episodes at a time, cost $30-$40, and you'd have to wait 2 months or more before the next one would come out. Thankfully, you didn't have to pick between subbed or dubbed like between VHS. Even with modern prices, it's still between $18-$30 for a 3-6 episode disc. Buying 20+ episode collections for just over the price of a single disc is a fantastic value.

Not liking anime, and not wanting to pay 4 dollars an episode are two different things. My store mustn't have had the entire series in a box-set because I completely missed it if it was only 50 bucks.

Thanks for understanding, and yes I completely understand the box-set scenario. 25 for a complete series isn't bad at all...I'd just need that series to not be on the T.V.

Oh, and somewhat off-topic.
Anyone here going to Anime Punch in Columbus, this April?

I'll be there with a group of friends who are "really" into this stuff :D

Well, to be fair I didn't realize it until it was pointed out to me, but it's impossible for there to have been subs-- they did rewrite three series into one and made it their own. There was never any Japanese VA for Robotech itself.

Back in my day you would get 2 episodes a TAPE ! and have to wait an eternity for them to finish the series and that was when 2 eps would be in the $34.99 - $ 29.99 range , but I am loving this sale just had a few dvd's sent for store pick-up Im looking at you Claymore vol.4 !! All in all me and my old lady did some serious damage ( with coupon , gift cards and RZ coupons , we got about $1200 worth of anime for a lil over 400 ) and sadly thats with not even having the BIG Anime carrying bb's do the discount those shelves are loaded ! :)
Ok this is what makes Anime so frigging annoying...

I can buy this of full metal panic!

http://www.amazon.com/Full-Met...id=1236308962&sr=8-1

which appears to be both Full Metal Panic! and FMP Fumoffu series.
Now I dont understand how the original FMP series is 7 discs 24 episodes and the Fumoffu series is 3 discs 12 episodes. The combo set is 6 discs 36 episodes, so the episode math adds up, but not the discs. Is the show going to be compressed on the combo disc set? Should I keep the 7 disc set of FMP and find the fumoffu seperately or return my FMP set and buy the combo set?
It's a compressed set. Fumoffu is on the last two discs and FMP is on the first four discs. They're also all stored in a giant spindle, one disc on top of the other, rather than individual plastic page things.
I also THOUGHT I got Bubblegum Crisis, but I just noticed the "Tokyo 2040" subheading yesterday, so I'm going to return that. I've heard the original is great, but 2040 is horrible.

I think I spent about $170 or so total, minus the $17 plus tax for returning 2040 I'll be around the $150 range, which is probably the end for me. Maybe grab a straggler here or there, but I spent a bunch on anime last year at Right Stuf, probably more than twice what I've spent on this BB clearance, and I've only watched lilke two or three series out of the 10 or so I probably got back then.
Bubblegum Crisis 2040 isn't bad. It's not great but it's good enough with a decent arc and cast.
I got the following thus far:

Divergence Eve: The Seraphim Collection

Najica: Complete Collection

Up until now all I've watched is the average stuff: Dragonball Z, Akira, Appleseed. So now my education in Anime begins. lol
If you like heavy sci-fi than Divergence Eve is great. However anyone buying the Seraphim Collection should check the first disc to make sure it works right. I bought it when it first came out and the the credit ending to episode 2 messes up and episode 3 wouldn't play or play with severe skipping (depending on dvd player) and I've read on another forum of other people who also experienced this problem. But I also exchanged it with another disc that works fine, so there may be bad batches out there.

Najica is also a good series with a lot of fanservice and some stories that move you. The ending being the heaviest of it all.

Alright well, anyone who's used the kiosk in-store, have you ever noticed seeing any anime DVDs that didn't turn up 50% on it? I'm looking at one in particular that released back in October and is showing up as the regular price. Any reason it would be doing this? And is there anyway to get the price 50% off if I order it now for the original price? It's not available at any stores nearby.
Just a heads up for anyone who bought the Phoenix collection. I saw a thread on AnimeNewsNetwork about a possible visual and audio distortion problem in the the first volume after the second episode.

Read here:

Oy, now I have to check my set from back when FYE was dumping it for half off as well. Thanks for the heads-up!

I can't tell you any reasoning behind it but I experienced the same when looking through the last two volumes (and last box) of Code Geass, amongst a few other titles. In most of those cases the DVDs were all listed as "Backordered", but the ones that weren't marked down tended to be titles that none of the five or six local Best Buys (both with and without this anime clearance) had on the shelves to begin with.

Just a guess, though. Can't say for certain.

Backordered anime doesn't work on the kiosk. I tried to buy Macross and it kept showing up full price :bomb: Anywho, if anyone is looking for Final Fantasy Unlimited, Haruhi boxset, or a whole bunch of Naruto and DBZ, the Best Buy in Meriden, CT is the place to be. Here's my haul: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time 2-disc, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away. These are all movies that I have "copies" of already...

Here's what I picked up at the Otay Ranch/La Mesa Best Buys so far:
FMA Season 1 $25
Rune Soldier $15
Witchblade $29
Cowboy Bebop $20
Ergo Proxy $25

I also managed to order FMA Season 2 for $25 and the Madlax collection for $16.50 from the kiosk. I had both of them sent to my house for only $2.50 each and just received shipping confirmation for FMA Season 2 today. Gonna see if I can order more stuff that wasn't available at the BMs before the clearance is over.

I remember that. You only had B&M options so you were stuck paying retail prices for 2 episodes. If you were lucky the dub was 5 bucks less expensive than the sub. I bought Eva that way and there was like a six month delay between volumes 10 and 11. I was pissed.

Man, do we have it good now.
