A Heartfelt HELLO to all my friends at CheapAssGamer!

I got news of a potentially HUGE anime sale scheduled to start at approximately 460 Best Buy stores starting on 3/1/09 through 3/21/09.

Here's the listing of the 400+ stores scheduled to run this sale:

From ICV2.com news:

"Best Buy’s Anime Close-out Stores March 1st to 21st

Published: 02/20/2009, Last Updated: 02/23/2009 04:45am

ICv2 has obtained a list of the Best Buy stores that will be running 50% off close-out sales on anime beginning March 1st (see “Best Buy’s New Anime Strategy”) (article link is at bottom of this post). The sale will run from March 1st to March 21st and allow these 460+ stores to reduce their SKU count dramatically, as part of the chain’s move to concentrate its anime efforts in stores where anime has performed best.

Here's a comprehensive article on Best Buy's new ANIME Strategy as mentioned at the top of this thread:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-02-20/best-buy-to-change-dvd-strategy

Finalized list: here.

I've got 2 stores in my area so hopefully I'll find some stuff of interest.

Also, animaniac provided this coupon which can be used with this sale:

Lyrical Nanoha does not come up on sale. Your best bet is to try and get the discount in-store.

Others I did not check sorry.

i thought i was going to miss this sale (no car at law school) but i came home briefly for the break and was able to pick up a few titles :) Thanks OP

I picked up 6 titles
1. Burst Angel Complete Series (Not much to the story but love the art here)
2. Final Fantasy Unlimited Complete (At $20, I had to check this out -- even if the FF enthusiasts have denounced it)
3. Howl's Moving Castle (I love Miyazaki's work)
4. Little Nemo (Thought this was OOP, was pleasantly surprised to find it for $3.50)
5. Ranma 1/2, Season 7 (Been wanting to see how this anime wrapped up)
6. My HiMe Anime Legends (Have heard many great things about this)

Came out to about $100 -- sweet!

I heard FFU is awful. My-HiME, however, is AMAZING. I'm watching it now (just finished vol. 5 of 7) and wow, i'm blown away. Enjoy it!

I ordered some Miyazaki films from the kiosk today, and bought Full Metal Panic and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya in store. Now, it looks like I'm done.

Goodbye BestBuy 50% off all anime sale, it was fun, but all good things must come to an end and our bank accounts are glad for it. There was excitement, laughter, and well, even crying at times but...zzzzzZZZZZZ.
Why didnt you bother to order via Kiosk? stopping by with nothing is a waste of time?
I've never seen one of these fabled kiosks. Besides I had gotten out of the lab earlier, and it was only 5 minutes out of the way. Also, no need for the second question mark.
:D Your conscience is starting to get greedy
I don't think it's me being greedy. I mean I only picked up Full Metal Panic TSR Vol 3 & 4, and the complete set of 'The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya'. Didn't pick up much the first time around so was thinking of just picking up possibly DBZ Season 4 since that's the only one I'm missing but we'll see. I mean good deals come and go but when will I see such prices ever again right?!

An interesting update-- Fruits Basket is getting a Viridian release in April, which makes it 17.99 after 50% off. Also, Madlax showed up at 50% off-- 16.50 after discount. I may return my old Fruits Basket and get the slightly cheaper release-- six bucks cheaper. How's the packaging inside-- does it outclass Viridian packaging? These two of course showed up as 50% off for me, but YMMV with the wonky kiosks, of course.

Also, any opinion on Madlax? I guess it's made by the same people who made Noir, which I liked.

This Gurren Lagann business is confusing. I held off on buying the initial releases because they were sub-only and were likely to have more extras w/ the imminent re-release. So first day of this sale I picked up the new big collector's box and a few days later I ordered vol. 2 off the kiosk and saw that there was a vol. 3 coming out on 3/17. (Which turns out is a listing for Vol 4. [3 discs].)

Flash forward to earlier today when I was looking around a different BBY where I'd scheduled a store pickup and didn't see the new one. I never really trust BBY's website descriptions since they often randomly list disc contents from who knows what; I only wanted to make sure it listed both Eng/Jap audio. I double checked stuff on Amazon and saw vol. 3 was listed as coming out in May. Then got confused when I saw a vol. 2 LE w/ dub/sub.

Of course it was in the back of my mind that the original set had 2 volumes per package, but it didn't occur to me that they were treating the re-release similarly...kinda. Looks like the LE packages have 2 volumes per box, but they also sell them individually this time. And I got my nomenclature mixed up in my head. "Volumes" are discs, "Sets" are the boxes. Having just now opened up this big red box, I see it indeed has both Vol. 1 & 2. Good thing I have RZ Silver and can return this extra vol. 2 w/o having paid shipping. Looks like I indeed have another trip scheduled to the clearance store's kiosk.

At least according to my sale-store kiosk, none of those were coming up 50% off, unfortunately.

Yeah, on Best Buy's site I'm 95% positive that what they have listed as Volume 4 limited edition is actually Set 3 limited edition for some reason. And neither that, nor the Set 2 limited edition were showing up discounted at the kiosk unfortunately, and I don't know about you but I can't find it at any stores either, so it looks like dvdpacific gets my business for this necessity.

Do you remember if the Set 2 (vol. 3 & 4) non-LE was showing up discounted? As much as I have the disease that doesn't let me buy anything but the top-of-the-line version of whatever, I may be able to convince myself to skip out on this backpack (which I've not yet bothered to look up and see what it looks like).

I've seen some boxes marked Set 2, but they were amongst Set 1 and Set 3, so I just assumed they were part of the original release without actually picking it up and seeing if it was bilingual. The delayed release of the new Set 3 and the small size of the box (uniform w/ the other two) lead me to believe this is not the new one packaged with extra trinkets.

Yeah - I heard the same thing - but all the criticism seemed to be directed at the fact that the anime wasn't really inspired much by FF. I'm not a big FF enthusiast but love fantasy stories so as a stand-alone saga, FFU sounded very interesting. And, well, at $20, I thought it was worth the plunge ;-)

Haven't gotten to My-HiMe yet -- watched a few episodes of Burst Angel and it's exactly as I expected - very loud and a lot of action :) Not much dialogue or story but it's definitely fun to watch.

FFU - is just boring and re-uses same battle sequences over and over. Takes like 2 minutes to load a gun then fire a single shot. I'd really suggest skipping it.

My-Hime on the other hand is great. It starts off like a typical school girl style show with powers and by disc 3/4 its turned into something amazing. The sequel My-Otome isn't as good compared to first but still worth watching,

Just an FYI. Looked up Afro Samurai season 1 bluray on the kiosk and it came up for $9.99. Sadly none of the other bluray titles are showing up at 50% off.

Phew. I think I'm done with this sale now... my bank account will thank me for it. Here's what I ended up with through the whole length of the sale:

Berserk Complete Series
Bleach: Memories of Nobody
Cowboy Bebop Complete Series
Elfen Lied Complete Series
Full Metal Alchemist Seasons 1 & 2
Inuyasha Seasons 2 & 5
Outlaw Star Complete Series
Xenosaga Complete Series
Yu Yu Hakusho Seasons 1-4

I don't remember the exact costs of each item, but it came out to be about $250 combined. Not too shabby.

On a side note, I noticed that some of the kiosks started changing their prices back to the regular prices, so if you haven't had the chance to take advantage of using those, you better hurry before you miss your opportunity.

So this sale is supposed to end on 3/21, right? Since this was supposed to be a sale to move a lot of inventory in a short time (kind of like a clearance) do you think there's a chance they will actually start a new sale on 3/22 with a bigger percentage off? Or is everything remaining going to sit on the shelves at normal price and not sell?

You forget option 3- ship unsold DVDs to the stores still carrying anime. I think that one's fairly likely.

IIRC, these stores aren't phasing out anime completely. They're just carrying a smaller stock. So the remaining stock might just stay there or be sent to other stores in the district. I imagine the 50% clearance was the easiest way for them to reduce stock and not lose their shirts in the process. It would probably be cheaper for them to just send things to the warehouse then mark it down further.
You forget option 3- ship unsold DVDs to the stores still carrying anime. I think that one's fairly likely.
I'm still pretty sure that's what happened last week at the Beaverton OR (cascade) store, as I can't see any other reason why they would sell out of everything except for an absolute assload of DBZ since my previous visit a week before that. They also had their 50% sale sign removed from that one column of shelves. Also, it'd make sense for them to ship them to the other stores, as the main idea behind the select-store-sale is that the non-sale stores are going to carry a more varied and deeper selection while the others just carry a few big sellers.

Took me a while but I finally found a site showing the "backpack" from the limited edition. It looks like a medium-small sized drawstring bag, not a backpack as advertised. I also forgot to check the kiosk for the price on non-LE set 2. Now I'm thinking I might skip it too, I was hoping it'd be big enough to transport my Wii in, but it doesn't look like it could hold that much... Then again it's about an $8 difference on dvdpacific with the additional shipping cost, and the non-LE isn't in stock right now anyway.

Just Finished Negima, and I have to say I'm disappointed. They first few episodes led me to believe there was going to be constant battles, but it was only a few here and there. While character development is great, I wanted more action.

Is season 2 basically the same?

I think the first series of Negima was supposed to be 52 eps. long because it wasn't too popular it got reduced to 26. I didn't like the original series either. I have only scanned through some eps. of the new series but can't really say if it good or not. From what I saw it did look better.

Looks like some places are using "Part" rather than "Set" to label the duo box sets. The non-LE wasn't on sale at the kiosk. The LE is currently $33.99 @ DeepDiscount, and the sale shouldn't be much longer in the future. Set 3 also seems to be in stock @ $27/$37. I guess I'll pick it up there. In their recommendations, I also saw Robot Jox (old corny live action mech movie) is on DVD; sold!

When I went to the store to return my extra Gurren Lagann vol. 2, I saw they got in new items. There's a new one called Ah My Buddha, which looks like another harem show. I don't follow the scene anymore, but that doesn't seem like mainstream tier A stuff. I still don't know what I personally think will happen at the end of this sale.

Put in one more kiosk order:
Spirit: Origins of the Past (Special Edition) $15
Puni Puni Poemy & Kekko Kamen (2 discs) (preorder) $10

Little Nemo was under Childrens on the website, so no sale for me. I remember seeing it in theaters, getting the VHS, and reading a couple of the old comic strips as a kid. This was all a few years after begging my mom (and receiving) the NES game. That chronology doesn't seem like how it should have gone, but that's how it played out for me.

I tried the kiosk ordering for in store pickup at another BB but they returned "could not find." Unfortunately, customer service rep I called was a buffoon. I'll try again tomorrow morning and see if I can't insist on free shipping. I feel like a heel, but getting Black Lagoon season 1 for under $20 sounds delicious.
hmmm, thinking about getting Black Blood Brothers as my final one for this sale. Anyone seen it?? any good?
BBB is about vamps, hence black blood (humans are red blood or something like that-they briefly described how the world is set up fairly early in the series-it has that 2-3 minute flashback, then op, and the present day stuff, ending-I like it, but it probably isn't everyone's cup of tea-it was a light novel convert-and that to me usually means a more organized world setting, i.e. you won't go, man, that just made no sense, or, where did that come from (and I am thinking gantz here)
It also had a korean ending theme for whatever reason...

Unfortunately, I didn't have any plans that would bring me close to a Best Buy, so a friend is picking up the Ergo Proxy and Le Chevalier D'eon complete sets for me sometime today. Not bad for $50.

It's certainly a great sale, even compared with Right Stuf's regular 40% sales. Thank you Speedy. It's funny that many are commenting how they're "done" with the sale as if they need some affirmation on their addiction willpower, only to see them a couple days later talking about a couple more purchases. Just an observation.

Was the $50  excluding gas expense from your friend?

Well, as far as I'm concerned, I'm not "done" until the end of tomorrow, the last day of the sale. My tally so far is $650 and change, I might very well not buy any more titles, but who knows? The kiosk exploit was the game changer for me, and I think I'll be spending some of my work day double checking and research titles online that I might have thought about for a while, and add those to my shopping list. Thankfully my bank account is more than intact. Admittedly $150 worth of the stuff I bought was for flipping, but it's only to help finance other anime purchases I wouldn't otherwise buy at full price.

What will happen then with your purchase? for keep? for resale? for trade? for trash?

How about you, were you done with the sale? Officially its up until tomm?
How about you, were you done with the sale? Officially its up until tomm?
Not sure. I can't think I'm done because I'll randomly recall a title I wanted in the middle of the day, like I did with the Witch Hunter Robin collection yesterday, an anime I liked but haven't thought about for a couple years, or various old school Gundam releases. A friend CLAIMS he saw the Blu-ray of Royal Space Force: Wings Of Honneamise at a nearby Best Buy, so I think I'll check at lunch.

Normally, I would keep it for myself.
What will happen then with your purchase? for keep? for resale? for trade? for trash?
Probably keep, since re-sale value for it isn't much.

It's even cheaper at dvdpacific.com, $28.49 for the LE 2 (with like 1.50 non-free shipping due to the backpack making it irregular), and the Part 3 pre-orders are at $23/$32.

Aw damnit, I didn't expect BB to carry that... Now I have to check the kiosk for yet another thing. It's a pretty shameless harem anime, sticks to all the major conventions really well, and rewards those seeking extra fanservice with a spectacular final episode in both seasons.

Well, I went back for

Black Blood Brothers today

and pre-ordered Princess Tutu for next month and chose instore pick-up at one of the stores that WILL get it.

Went to a BB tonite and the kiosk was not showing half off, but the Anime section had the 50% off signs. I tried another kiosk in the same store (about 6 feet away) and Anime showed 50% off. Code Geass 3 LE was showing 59.99 for some reason, so I didn't buy it. I did manage to spend another $400. $30 in shipping charges is rough for 10 DVDs.

Your first Kiosk attempt was probably on default to reflect Best Buy's national DVD pricing (e.g. the same exact thing you would see on your home computer). There should be an drop down menu that changes it to reflect Best Buy's actual in-store Kiosk prices.

$30 is steep for shipping/handling alone. It's probably not going to happen any time soon, but I wish they would program it so discounts on shipping is automatically applied when multiple DVDs are ordered. Oh wells...

browsed a kiosk to find a copy of akira at my store [muncie, in] and tried to get it at half off. first attempt yielded a 'yes' that all anime was half off, but the cashier went to check that bluray was included. the 'yes' turned into a 'no', so i let it go

but i couldn't leave without knowing if the bd of afro samurai was half off and found that it rang up as such on the kiosk-- same in store. so i brought that back to the cashier and said that i figured bluray was included since that one rang up and the manager conceded that it must be so. in his words 'it wouldn't be fair if this one is, we'll honor it on all bluray then'

akira bd scored for $18!

Who ever hasn't gotten Mai-Hime, You have to! I just started watching it again, and it's still one of my all time favorites. You can get the series for around 20 bucks, and it's well worth it.

For the love of god stay away from Ah My Buddha, that show is just horrible. It basically failed on every point of a harem anime and uses every harem anime stereotype imaginable. SO much better stuff out there.

Like others and myself said if anyone is looking for another show to check out I can't stress My-Hime enough, especially at ~$20 for the entire boxset. It starts off good and ends incredible. A few reviews if anyone is intrested, just scroll all the way to the bottom to avoid spoilers

Hey now! Ah My Buddha isn't that bad. Granted, I thought the second season was the better of the two, mostly because of the antagonist, but that's beside the point. You can't say that it incorporated every harem stereotype possible and also say it failed on every point, since its point was partly to be stereotypical. It was shameless, not coy or romance or a tease. Similar to how someone described a different series, the main character isn't a spineless wiener, and that makes it somewhat refreshing (and is probably the only major harem stereotype it ignores). That said, it'll be cheaper to buy it as a set later, and it'd be a waste to just buy the first dvd at BB and the rest somewhere else.

Also, no, no, no. Don't buy My-HiME at BB when you can get it all separately with a pimpin' artbox at Rightstuf for just $24 out of the bargain bin, I know I wish I had instead of the thinpak at a Buy 1 Get 1 Free sale at Suncoast. Now if only they'd put Midori Days vol 3 in the bin so I could fill out my set.
The sales is end today. What happens after today? Possible it goes 75% off or BB extended the sales?
most likely it ends completely. They'll either keep what stock they have and just sell off or send stuff back to the manufacturer.
