I've never played any of the DMC games and have a PS3... Should I buy the codes from someone? I bought the base and already grabbed some other PS3 codes. What do people think of this series? Is it too dated now?

I just listened to a Retronauts podcast about the series and they seem to think it still holds up. They were urging everyone to get the hd collection. One thing I remember from owning dmc1 back in the day is that it's really hard. You really have to learn the game and master combos. I hear 3 is maybe even harder. Not many people liked 2 very much
 
It's not harder than Bayonetta or Ninja Gaiden or any other action game where the combat is rooted from fighting games. The biggest newbie mistake in fighters is not blocking enough - I'd say that's the case with these games too.

Did anyone confirm this either way? I wanted to get Strider and Remember Me to upgrade/replace my PS Plus copies, but I'm Plus for another 6 weeks or so. Do the game codes (not the coupon codes) expire? Thanks!

The easiest way is to let your PS Plus run out and then redeem the keys (which don't expire). I had no luck getting support to remove the PS Plus versions from my account.
