I can never finish RPGs....

Don't bother, you'll probably want to hang yourself before you've beat it.

PAD, I can empathize with the Zelda bit, switch Zelda with Carrier. I put that game down, picked it back up and was fucked.
The scary thing is that after looking at these lists I still see more RPGs I want to look at on my shelves.
It's a disease, and we're never going to recover if we just hang around here with fellow enablers.

I find that I get older I play less at a time. I remember when the 1st and second Syphon filters came out as well as Metal gear solid. I remember playing those games almost all the way through in one weekend. Nowadays I can't really play for more then a few hours and the sad part to that is cause of this site my collection is bigger then ever. My point to all of this. I finish no rpgs. The last games I played through quickly and beat was RE 4, God of war and Indigo prophecy.

Ironically enough, I collect Squaresoft games but the only Final Fantasy I've completely finished is FFX.

BUT, I've beaten every Seiken Densetsu, Chrono, Musashi, Kingdom Hearts, and many other action RPGs from other publishers.

I just get really tired of random battles where I'm stuck without a character I need to beat one enemy (that's why I loved FFX, YOU CAN SWITCH YOUR CHARACTERS AT ANY TIME! GENIUS!)

I'm trying to get into the Shin Megami Tensei games tho. Nocturne is fun so far....

the only two rpg's i've beaten where CV:SOTN and Grandia 2 (loved it so much that i bought the pc version off of ebay even thought i beat the dc version long ago)

Even though I got heavly into KOTOR 1, i stopped playing it once I got to the end part of dant where you choose to go to 1 of 3 planets. :(

stopped playing Beyond good and evil for some reason even though it was great.

You should really go back to BG&E...best 8 hours of videogaming EVER imo...
I used to be able too play an RPG for 4 days straight and finish it. Now I find myself rushing through and having trouble beating bosses. I'm still stuck on the last boss in FFX and dont want to level up to beat him ;)
love the car man you got great taste. as like you guys...i cant finish them either. i really want to finish both Xenosagas and Shadow hearts convenant. but im still working on FFX-2 and thats taking me a whole year to do .

Amazing how some people can't tell the difference between an RPG and an adventure game.

Zelda isn't an RPG (unless you count that crappy sidescroller)

And can someone tell me how FFX ends? I played less than halfway through.
I am hoping that Tidus dies, but that is just wishful thinking.

The only RPG that I've ever finished all the way is Final Fantasy VII. I'm pretty close to the end in FF VIII, and I stopped playing Xenogears on the final boss when I couldn't beat him because I didn't have a key item for my gear. I have a bunch of RPGs that I haven't even started playing yet, which I hope to get to soon. I actually just bought Digital Devil Saga today so that's another one in the collection. I'm currently working on Phantom Brave.

I know what RPG's are, but going just by the words, Role Playing Game, couldn't something like Trauma Center or Phoenix Wright be a RPG? You are playing the role of a surgeon/lawyer in a game.
I mostly play RPG's, but I never finish them!! I own dozens of them but have finished less than half that I own. I am some what of a perfectionist...but a lazy one, and when I find out that I missed an item or spell or something, I start to lose interest in the game then end up quitting. Anyone else like this, or am I the only one with RPG ADHD :p
I almost never finish RPGs anymore but for me I normal lose interest towards the end, it always seems the that story turns to crap and the game requires a long tedious dungeon to reach the final boss or hours of pointless leveling.

I did that now too. Let's see how many I can name off my head:
1. Final Fantasy VI
2. Baten Kaitos
3. Golden Sun
4. Neverwinter Nights
5. Morrowind
6. Final Fantasy I & II: Dawns of Souls
7. Pokemon (the new ones)

Yeah. I end up a lot of times losing interest at the end. Don't know why. I'm very close to beating FF VI and Neverwinter Nights too. It is always at the very last dungeon/level and I just never go ahead and finish it. Now that school has started, I got even less time for games.

Maybe that's why I enjoy playing sports games. It's something that I could easily pick up and put down in an hour. This is probably why many causal gamers like sports games.

I actually beat FF 2 and Morrowind

But Baten Kaitos was the one that really got me, great game up until the end when I suddenly needed to level like crazy, pick up a bunch of rare cards and the boss battles started taking forever, so I just quit.

My recent list of uncompleted games:

1. Nocturne
2. Digital Devil 1
3. Shining Tears
4. Tales of Destiny 2
5. Stella Deus
6. Atlier Iris
7. .Hack 2

I think Zelda is best classified as an adventure/rpg or action/rpg. It has elements of RPGs such as puzzles, a wide array of upgradable items and weapons. You can even level up in a way. Although it isn't numerical, the life hearts serve that purpose.

I have owned about 20 rpgs, and have finished 3....Pokemon Red, Pokemon Blue, and Pokemon Yellow.

Never played the other pokemon games either. I haven't even touched about 10 of my rpgs.....just sitting in my backlog of evergrowing games....

I have the same problem. I can never finish playing a RPG! I'v been playing Kingdom Hearts for about 2 years now! I just can get passed that damn clock tower boss! :wall:

For some reason, I never played RPGs til 3 years ago, when I discovered that I love them. The only ones I've beaten, unless you count the Zelda games, are Paper Mario 1 and 2.

My list of RPGs which I have started and not completed is quite short next to some of yours, but it is as follows:

Tales of Symphonia
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Star Wars: KOTOR
Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls
X-Men Legends

I wish I had gotten into the genre when I was younger and still had both free time and an attention span.

Tidus dies. In fact, its arguable that Tidus never lived.

Merry Christmas!

i must make one of those color coded lists, i am a master at completing and playing games compared to you guys, this is one of my goals for tommorow.

Actually I just put it all on my IGN list, i counted, pretty badly, and it looks like I have about 160 out of 275 beat on that list, but i have more games not on there that ive beat too. I must have way too much time, but this playing these games dates back bout 13 years, im only 18 now. You guys need to get on the ball and beat some games.

It's more of an action/adventure game, with an element or two from other genres.
I forgot Jade Empire... not that anyone really cares.
I did too. I'm about halfway thorugh it so far.

Barely Touched
Beaten
At least Halfway Through

GBA
Final Fantasy I&II
Kingdom Hearts: CoM
MMBN3: White
Pokemon Fire Red
Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire
Riviera
LoZ: Link to the Past
LoZ: Minish Cap

Gamecube
Loz: Wind Waker

PS2
Final Fantasy X
Kingdom Hearts

Yeah I have that problem as well, last Rpg I gave up on just recently was Megaman X Command Mission , it just hit me that if it wasn't for a random battle happening about 4 times in every room I could have been done with the damn level and moved on. Stuff like Kotor 1 and 2, Fable and Jade Empire I completely blew through but turn based traditional stuff just takes far more time then i'm willing to spend these days.

I love RPGs, but I just can't seem to finish them most of the time either. My backlog is now so large, I don't think I'll ever finish them in my life time. But they're nice to look at. XD My usual nail in the coffin is getting to the last area and switching games. Sometimes I'll only get 25 hours in though, switch games, go back to play the original and it's been so long I have to start over because I either don't remember what I was doing or what was going on. Beh. I also have a habit of replaying older games over the newer ones I buy.

Maybe I'll post my crapload of unfinished rpgs later tonight.

Never finish them? Hell, I can never START them.

I had two days off from work, and I got a cheap deal on Radiata Stories + the guide... I was going to relax, play it through, get started, but I couldn't ever get over the hurdle of what a time sink it would be, how I might not have time to finish it, I'll get to it soon. I just can't start something knowing it will take a 40 - 50 hour commitment anymore. Either that, or I'll play two or so hours and then never go back to it again.

I have 12 sealed PS2 RPG's on my shelf including DIgital devil nocturne, Digital devil saga 1 and 2(both sealed), Radiata story, Shinning Tears, Arteris Iris, Stella Deus, Growlanser saga(limited edition), Y's, Phantom brave, la pucelle, Disgaea(opened but never played), and Romancing Saga, why I waste my money and not play them is beyond me,

Big reason is when I have a girlfriend I am all into her and she is into me, so I never have time between that school and work :(

For me, just:
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2
Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, Silver

And thats about it.
Incredibly sad now that I think about it, as RPGs are my favorite genre and those are the only games i have completed....

I have almost beaten:
Tales of Symphonia
Final Fantasy VIII, last boss
Final Fantasy Tactics
" " Advance

And I've started pretty much every rpg I own, which is too many to list.

RPGs I've beaten include:

FF4-8 and 10
Xenogears
Zelda: Link to the Past, Link's awakening
Chrono Trigger
Shenmue (if it can be considered that)

Not many past the really popular games

Games I've played, but not beaten:
Golden Sun
Mario + Luigi Superstar Saga
Legend of Zelda Oracle of Seasons
Pokemon Ruby
FFTA
FF9
Lunar Legend
Lunar SSS Complete
Star Ocean 1/2
Crusader of Centy
Breath of Fire
Earthbound
Phantasy Star online

RPGs I own and have not started:
La Pucelle
Phantom Brave
FFX-2
Kingdom Hearts
Grandia II

The problem with a lot of these games is that they really just are not at all engrossing. Most of which I've gotten rid of since I just didn't want to invest hours upon hours of gameplay without gettng much in return. Star Ocean 2 was a good example of playing 40 minutes before hitting a save point. Golden Sun is the king of obnoxious dialogue, with all those fucking emoticons and nods and childishly bad sentences. Of all the games on that list that I've not beaten, the only two I plan on beating are Mario and Luigi and Oracle of Seasons. Most RPG stories lack the sort of in-depth and good story lines that a good novel has. I only wish to play the game if the story is actually good, the music is really good or if the gameplay is fun. Most of those games fall flat. FFX, however, was surprisingly fun and refreshing, compared to the boring and cliche FF9 (however, the almost completely Linear story was a bit of a let down and the last bosses were hideously easy).

FF8 and Xenogears were insanely boring near the half way point. I gamesharked past them.

I've beaten a decent amount of RPG's, but lately I can't bring myself to finish what I've started. I've stopped playiing Star Ocean 2 and 3 because the last boss beat my ass. I quit playing Dragon Warrior VII because I couldn't find the damn heat stone. I'm at 50 hours and I'll never beat it. I don't even remember where I am. I also spent 150 hours making an RPG in RPG Maker for PS, but I overwrote it, so that's 150 hours of my life in the trash.

I've beaten Symphony of the Night at least 9 times, though. 6 on PS, 3 on Saturn. I also plowed through Shadowhearts : Covenant in a week. I beat it, then went back and added another 15 hours getting all of the secrets. Awesome game.

Perhaps you don't like RPGs? I too don't finish RPGs, but that's because the story sucks - and I just go read the game script instead - and put the game on ebay.

I only finish RPGs that have good stories like FF10 or 9 or Skies of Arcadia.

fire elm for gamecube was the first RPG that i beat probally in the last 6 months well that and Riveria

I reason why most people dont finsh rpgs today compair to 10 years ago is There are just too many of them coming out to beat. and most of those people who was spending all the time beating the games now have full time jobs

I mean take a look at all the rpgs coming this month and next. Dragon quest 8 is going to probally take 50-80 hours to see everything ... I hope to get anywhere from 2 to 4 hours of gameplay in a day.. there r tons of days im lucky to get 1 hour .. now say i can play 2 hours a day Dragon warrior 8 will take me anywhere from 1 to 2 months to complete and in that time there will probally be at least 5-10 other rpgs that hit at that same time ..

i remember playing FF7 and Vandel hearts 1 for 8 hours in a row when i first got them.. now though with college and work there is no way in hell that i ever have 8 hours in a row to play a game.

this month alone i want to play

Dragon quest 8
Sulk tactics
mario Rpg for DS

so right there is 3 rpg games this month and there is at least 3 more next month

FF 3
and 2 more i cant think of

and add all the other games i want to play, as you can see there are just way too many games to play

(i got lunar dragon song for the ds and loved it, im 14 hours in right in the middle of the game and havent picked it up in over 3 weeks cause of no time)

I don't think RPGs are for busy adults (such as me) as I seem to never have enough time to really devote myself to finishing one anymore. If I pick up a game and play it for a weekend, there's a high chance I won't pick it up again for another 3 or weeks thanks to a busy lifestyle such as mine: friends, family, nightlife, girls, drinking, & non-RPG video games, etc. I started FFX about a yr ago and I have yet to put a full hour on it. Hell, I started FF9 ages ago in college and haven't picked it up since - not because I didn't like it - quite to the contrary. I loved FF9 when I played it but as I developed a busy college/social life, I really haven't been able to devote any serious time to playing any big RPG (with the exception of Disgaea which during a recovery from a broken leg, I pretty much sat on my ass so I actually could play). So, barring an accident which immobilizes me, I doubt I'll finish any RPGs anytime soon even with an Excel sheet to keep track of where I left off
I never finished Zelda:TWW because I didn't find the big rupee bag and got too lazy to sail to look for it.
The sailing in that game is the worst. Made me LOATHE the game so I much I hurried through it and sold it [and just recently bought it again... ]

I'm a good way into Star Ocean: Til the End of Time... and I'm afraid to turn it back on because I hardly remember what was going on or how the battle system works.

Edit:
I also had new games started in probably -- FF7, FF8, FF9, Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, and FFIV, though I've beaten them all at least once before.
Coincidentally, I never finished FFX-2 (I abhored that game, almost as much as FFX) or Metroid Prime 2 and Onimusha 2 for that matter. (I did however, make it to the last boss before I got fed up with MP2 and I watched my buddy finish Onimusha 2, so I didn't feel so bad about getting rid of them.)

Seems to be a common problem after the millionth time I relised I forgot something and had to start the game over. I started using gamefaqs and then later I use action replay. Makes starting over and leveling up easier when you have to start over. Plus all those annoying medels and crap in games like star ocean, tales of symphonia easier to get.

I've beaten Jade Empire, KOTOR, and Final Fantasy 10 this gen. And have WAY to many to beat thay i've bought.

I have stopped buying and playing most traditional RPGs (especially if they have random encounters) and just play mostly Tactical/Strategy RPGs. Given my busy schedule, I can squeeze in a few battles and maps a day and be done. I always finish the TRPGs I play but it takes me close to 3-4 months to do so.

The only traditional RPG I have beaten this year is Lunar SSSC but I going to start Lunar 2 when I am done with Stella deus.
I am looking forward to FFXII even though I have only played VII and X.

Star ocean is a great game. For story one of the best this gen I think. All those endings though. That game is the reason strategy guides exist.

There's a guy at rpgamer.com that beats RPGs in only 20-25 hours. I am deeply envious. But of course, he's been playing RPGs since the 1980s, so he's an expert & knows all the tricks to fast level-up

Reality's Fringe said:
I don't really have the attention span to play most RPGs anymore. Maybe I'm just getting dumber

Funny, I was thinking this too (about myself, not you).

I think it's also due to the fact that I've played so many rpgs, new ones seem like theyre just repeats. When I play them now, even if it's new and to my liking, I can pick apart every character, plot device, battle system, item, etc. and compare them to some other game that did it first.

I have more luck beating my gba rpgs simply because I get bored real easily when I'm on campus. I love the hell out of xenosaga 2 and stella deus, but I'll be damned if I pick them back up again. I guess I need ritalin.

The problem you just described (last message) is not only a problem in RPGs but also entertainment in general. As you grow older, the movies/tv shows start to feel like repeats of stuff you already saw when you were young.

That's why I don't bother going to the theater anymore. And tv, there's only 2-3 shows per week that really interest me. Everything else feels like a "been there/done that" rehash.
