Gasp. This is quite the megaton announcement for me.

So there's this San-Francisco based startup that a friend of mine works for - and they need software people. Pretty much people exactly like me.

They're doing some really cool stuff - online cell phone games (so there's programming for cell phones, and for the servers). The games so far have been based on sports events - watch the game on TV, try to call the plays and whatnot before they happen, watch your score go up and down in relation to your friends or everybody playing. In a nutshell - of course there's a whole lot more.

They're located right in the middle of SF ("SoMA", south of market area) - in fact, pretty much across the street from Sega's offices.

Now I have to find a nice 1-br in SF (I'm certainly getting paid enough for it... although not as much as a certain lawyer). I'm driving up there next week, and I think my plan so far is to get a temporary guest apartment for a few weeks while I go looking for a real apartment. I want an area that will maximize my interaction with people (especially cute girl people) but a place that won't get burgled is also nice, as is being able to walk to the office sometimes (but that's really less important).

And not really knowing anything about the city would make it difficult to decide, as well as to find my way around while I'm looking. Yikes! And on top of that, the old apartment has to be packed and moved to the new place, or temporary storage if I can't find anything in time. You know, just to add to the pressure.

If anybody who lives in / used to live in SF would like to chime in with advice or such, feel free. I'll take all the input I can get.

Oh, and if anybody in San Diego wants to swing by some time and get my stack of extra penny guides, let me know (but take the extra extras and give them away too!). There's around 25 different ones, I think. I live near Horton Plaza. (Edit: I think these are claimed)

Well.. cell phone games aren't quite the dream (I think). But at least a lot of my new coworkers are EA refugees, so no 90-hour weeks for me. Quite frankly, I don't think I'd like to be involved in "real" console game development (handhelds might be nice though).

Awesome, welcome to the Bay Area :) I'm from the south bay, so I'm not that familiar with SF. My friend lives in Nob Hill, so I know that neighborhood is pretty nice.

I'm sorry that I don't have any advice for you, but I just wanted to send you my best wishes and tell you congratulations on your new job!

I hope that everything goes well and you're very happy with everything. :)

Actually, I find handheld development to be quite boring compared to console development. Though you are right that the hours are much less than console development.

Congrats on the job, and good luck in San Fran. Just make sure you get an apartment that's really close to the major in-city train lines (Muni or BART). You'll hate yourself if you have to drive everyday to work.

Well, the jobs page shows 1 job. I'm not sure if it's filled yet or not. In any case, don't bother them if you don't have experience with most/all of the required skills, and don't tell them I sent you (which I didn't, and wouldn't matter anyway).

If you don't know what the .tap extension stands for, that's probably a bad sign.

And now that you know what company it is, you can just check the home page to find out about the products that are already available.

Awesome to see that they are using tapestry. I've been learning about that framework myself. My current webapp uses struts and I'm thinking about a massive change.

I intend to rent a 1-br, obviously by myself, ideally with some nice non-gay girl joining me at some point in the future. (She could be bi, though - I don't mind).

If you want "cute girl people" in a good area, then the Marina is for you. It is awesome -- you will pay for it, but if you don't mind dishing out the $$$, you will love the Marina.

That's a Commadore 64 Raw Tape file extension.

Seriously.

But other than that, I'm not familiar with it. I'm a .NET guy. .asp and .aspx for me!

I went to SF on my honeymoon. I think it's a kick ass place, but that's from a tourist perspective. We stayed at the Marriot off of Market. It's right down the road from the Sony store. Have fun we're your down there. Go eat some Mexican food at Tres Agaves. It's pretty good. The Margaritas are great, but expensive.

Thanks everybody.

Breaking news: traded my gamecube to gamestop for $45 - so I'd have one less box to worry about. Hopefully the wii really is backwards compatible. Yeah, I need to get rid of my gameboy player.

Settling into my studio apt.. temporary internet connectivity courtesy of the office, which gave me this fancy cell phone PCMCIA card.

Now what?
