I hate the ugly "Greatest Hits" cover!
... i'm confused here how Pooky is selling MGS2 for like $70... i thought that game was worth like $5 tops
You sure its not MGS2: Substance? That the rerelease 'directors cut' kinda version of the game. That one is worth alot on ps2. The Xbox version can be had for under $10, but its an inferior verssion.
I just bought MGS3 Subsistence yesterday (awesome game! Would never buy a GH version of it). Why hasn't that game hit GH yet? I think that's definitely a game to keep sealed to make money in the future.
I'd caution you against looking at games as any sort of investment. I love collecting games, and Im glad when I have games worth a little something, but a games value can change at any time with a rerelease/reprint or a compilation pack.

If your looking for ways to make money, theres plenty of better ways, like actual investing. Collect games and play them for fun.

My stack of 11 new Xenosaga 1's non-GH is hoping for the big moniez.

I listed my mint copy of Sons of Liberty on Ebay a few months ago with a starting bid of $1.99 and it received zero bids.

This guy has to be talking about Substance.

Theres a big difference between mint and OMGZ RAREZ NEW AND SEALED
I remember when I was like this. Funny that it only lasted about a month. Now I don't give a fuck. During that month I would just buy games to buy them. I wouldn't play them which made me wonder why am I wasting money on shit I don't use? I then sold off most of them and only keep games I really really like.
Word. Just last month I said fuck it and sold off pretty much my entire collection. I was pissing away 200 a month on games only to come back to the boards and scrounge for more deals. I just picked up a PSP and I'm having a hard time preventing myself from going through the same shit but that's the way it goes.

I buy games to PLAY them, not stare at the packaging and go 'omg that's ugly and clashes with my drapes and my beanie baby collection'. I mean, seriously, some collectors go so far as not buying the GH even if it has ALOT of extra content to it.

And, I don't know about you, but especially on CAG, that's like a universe ripping paradox. We ARE all cheapass gamers who want the most game for our money, right?

If it bothers you so much though, just find a site and print up a different cover. Mind you, there's some PAL versions of games that have more ummm colorful covers than their NTSC counterparts, but again, I don't buy the games to look at the covers, I buy them to PLAY them.

Every time a discussion like this pops up, people get righteous and start on the "I buy to play" rant. What's the big deal?

Some game art - cover, manual, or otherwise - is most definitely something to look at. Would you not agree with that? It might sit on the shelf for the majority of the time, but it's nice to pull out and flip through the manual or look at the cover art from time to time.

Compare it to buying first edition or hard cover books. This is something else that sits tucked away for most of the time. I could buy an e-book and print it out on Office Depot paper, but where's the charm in that?

You could almost take this argument as far as paintings and museums. Why visit a museum when you can just look at pictures of important paintings online? (Almost.)
I love people like you. Seriously. So i can buy Metal Gear Solid 2 for $10 at Kmart and then turn around and sell it for $100 on Amazon b/c its black label.
Yeah! and what is wrong with that. The Greatest Hits covers are ugly. If you can get an original black label copy, the good for you. Video games have a place in the secondary market as collectibles just like any other commodity.

Well said. A prime example of that is the original black label copy of Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando vs. the GH version. That game has one fine piece of foiled cover art. The GH version is a damn photo copy with the greatest hits red label. No comparison. Kingdom Hearts II is the same. So I can see how the guy who started this topic is pissed.

Well good for you. To each his own. But video games have come along way from being just something to pick up and play. Video games have reached the status, if not surpassed, the tv and movie industry. And I am not just talking about appeal, I am talking in terms of revenue as well. It has evolved into a true art form.

If a game is rereleased as a copilation pack, the differences are highly noticeable. Take for example the DMC compilation pack. First of all on the back in the corner it reads "1 of 3" of a set" Not for resale" or something like that. It also lacks the unpunched hang tabs in the back. It lacks the white magnetic strip with the name of the game on it. And the silver tab. Now I understand that with the newer games, the PS2 games were not produced with such things. But I have all three DMC's and they all have those features. So I think if anything, it would make the originals even more valuable, especially when there are many distinguishing features to a game.

My question is...with gas at 3.25 a gallon...why the hell would you waste the time to use a GC to go back to bestbuy and waste money on gas both ways? If you just bought it for 20 bucks the first time you were there, you would of saved on the gas money PLUS got the NON GH cover you wanted.

Gas costs money? I just put this card in the pump and it lets me fill my tank.

... Maybe that's why I get this strange bill every month.

Sometimes I actually go out of my way to get a GH version... yes, you read correctly. There have been rare cases where a GH version fixed glitches that were present in the original version. So now I will go for the GH version, just in case!

However, this will end for me with the current generation, since games can be easily patched via download on all the platforms. So now if all things are equal and I have a choice, I'll get the original box version if I can help it.

Silent Hill 2 Restless dreams PH on xbox rang a bell with this.

Actually, the Best Buy that had it is near my college, so I usually have to drive that far anyway. But yeah, I really should've just bought it then or at least hid the game behind some crappy game. lol.
OP you should try looking at another store I remmember the walmart I went to yesterday had at least 5+ copies of a KH non GH.
Really? Oh well, in the end, I was able to buy a non-GH KH2 from Ebay! I only had to pay $1 more (sure there were risks buying stuff from Ebay) than it would have cost at Best Buy plus tax and everything, so it's not too bad. I guess I kind of wasted my time, though -- and time is money. I'm still happy so it's all good. The original KH2 cover is definitely wayy better than the GH because it has the shiny effect! It's way nicer to look at it! I think a classic game such as KH definitely is a black label must. If it's some lame game like "Enter The Matrix" (well, it seems kind of lame) then I probably wouldn't care receiving a Platinum Edition. It really does depend on the game for me.

And good post siamesellama! Exactly what I would've said.

I actually bought my first GH game recently though; it was 007 Everything or Nothing... not a game that I intended to have in my game collection anyway, but from game reviews, it seemed like a good game to just play. And the funny thing is, the GH being red label matches the 007 red text logo on the cover, so it's not as bad as others. :p KH2 GH is definitely a no-no for me.

Honestly, I'm just happy that I know by waiting a few months I can get any top game for $20 (normally $15 with minimal searching). And that is worth a few ugly covers.

I mean Halo 2 probably still hasn't dropped to $20 (it may have by now but it probably took at least till the xbox died)

FFXII on the other hand should hit $20 in a few months
