I made a PINK arcade cabinet! Best Dad ever? Yup.

Thanks. Tonight I figured out how to remove the "welcome" screen and the "exiting windows" screen as well as remove all desktop icons and hide the taskbar (it still pops up for a split second though). I also deleted the windows loading sound... I might change this to something else though - I was thinking of recording my daughter saying "welcome to my arcade machine" or "my daddy is the best" or something funny. I also want to remove the mouse arrow (I'll probably change it to be one black pixel or something). Right now there's almost no trace of a PC to the untrained eye though!

geez man you're like the motherfuckin Notorious BIG 10 Crack Commandments and shyt...

coz u been in the game for years and it's made you an animal!!!

good job man!! I only hope this inspires the masses to try to 1 up you!!

I'm already inspired... I jus need the time and money first ^_^

and a daughter too

Holy crap...

And you are on CheapAssGamer!? Haha, that's amazing I had no idea you could just do something like that.

Better film your daughters reaction! I don't think she'll ever believe you built that yourself! Looks to professional... haha.

Heh, thanks! I really love working on these things. Check out the new hotness I'm working on right now:

This one will be a little... um, manlier? I'm going to stain and poly this bitch - 2 player control panel with an automated rotating LCD monitor - mainly for fighters. Slim profile so I can fit it where ever I want in the house. Ever since SFIII became totally playable I've been dying to make something proper to play it on. It will be slow going though since the weather isn't great right now...

You want manly?
Hang a big pair of balls on that thing!

Good luck with that next project. Make sure to make us jealous keep us posted!

Thanks! I need to make a new video - I realized I said I was running Windows 98 when it's clearly XP. Also, since windows is pretty well hidden now I think it starts up a lot nicer. I found some arcade sounds for startup and shutdown as well as browsing the menus so I need to add those in as well... I also need to install Daphne and maybe NES and Atari emulators to complete the software...

Update - Last night my daughter beat me at Frogger! I couldn't believe it. I mean, I stink at it but she got the hang of it really fast and it's by far her favorite game right now (no buttons). She also got lucky with a few blind jumps in the upper left - the log was there like every time!

She loves this thing which makes it that much sweeter. I think her favorite part is putting the quarters in though. She also clearly has no concept of money because if she doesn't like a game she just hits exit and holds her hand out for another quarter. I remember when I was a kid I could blow through $5 in 20 minutes after saving up for weeks!

Threadsurection! Awesome stuff. I remember seeing this on BYOAC a while back too. Hoepfully I will be building mine this Summer if my life can get back on track.

Keep us up to dae on the Slim. I really like the design and may borrow it. I just need to make mine a little less wide as well, so it won't have a trackball.

thats pretty cool. if i had the skill id like to make one out of one of those cocktail machines ( i think thats the name for them) i used to big big into mame a few years back and was able to locate alot of classic arcade games but at the time my pc was too old to do most of them justice. and it pissed me off that at the time you couldnt play games like red earth ( hard to find that rom) and the later street fighter games. sucks that the best games you can dl legally. id love to find that classic D&D shooter game. i think it was called crossbow.
Not sure how I missed this, but this is awesome.

Good job and your daughter is very lucky. :]
Thanks! I hope she ends up enjoying all the classics as much as I do.

I put the slim on hold for now since I got sidetracked making a jukebox. It is next on my list though (I think - I have a Donkey Kong I want to restore as well!).

It was my first attempt and I still have a few nagging things to finish up on it... it has been in operation for a while now though and people love playing on it... I'm planning to completely redo the control panels and finally apply some artwork to the table top. I have too many projects!!!

Alright people, it has been a long time coming but I finally convinced the wife to move the arcade cabinet to my daughter's room. Check it out:

Good. Now you can commence to working on my machine... *sigh*

There's a lot of pink going on there. Also, I'm glad that I'm looking (read: admiring) this at work because if my daughter saw this she'd wonder why she doesn't have one of these in her room and why she's only got a DS Lite with a small handful of games.

I lol'd at the castle sitting in the corner next to it. I bet that gets no fucking play time now that there's an arcade machine right next to it.

And like everyone else basically said, I wish my dad made me an arcade machine...

Nice job man!!!

*Quick question, what type of monitor do you got in there is it CRT based or LCD? and where did ya get it from?

Thanks everyone! It is already getting much more use than it did sitting in the basement. My wife even admitted to playing some Ladybug yesterday! Here are a couple more shots of it turned on. The marquee looks a little washed out because of the backlight and the fact that I suck at taking pictures - it looks much better in person.

The monitor is a 5:4 Dell LCD that I got for around $200. It is mounted vertically and looks great!

dang vertical style?!?! u gotta put sum shmups on there mang.

raise those kids well.

exposing children to bullet hell early on makes them fearless for life

My daughter's favorite game at the moment is Strikers 1945III. It takes her probably $50 in quarters to finish but she has completed the entire game twice now. Not really bullet hell but it is hectic. I am raising her right. I've got tons of vertical shmups on there - Don Pachi and DoDon Pachi are my two favorites at the moment.

Any other recommendations?

niiiiiiice~!!

I donno any real recommendations for arcade stuff tho... too much dreamcast killed the arcade shmup scene lol

Throw some of those impossible Japanese schmups on there. By the time she's a teenager she will be able to navigate bulletstorms with her eye's closed.

I on the other hand can't make it past Level 3 of Ikaruga ;)
Dimahoo!

My fav shmup
I love Dimahoo! That just reminded me to check out if Kingdom Grand Prix is on there. I think it is the prequel to Dimahoo but I don't recall seeing it in the gamelist. I'm also toying with the idea of adding some other emulators to the mix but I want her to get used to what's there right now... I'd love to get Ikaruga up and running but I don't know how to get nullDC working properly.

Get her Cutey Fatty! :D Find it on eBay and make sure to get it. ^_^

Javery you're doing your job, making sure she's a non-Asian female who likes video games. Make sure even when she grows into a teenager she still likes them. Don't EVER let another person convince her those are boy's toys, or just toys.

Ya just saw on Kotaku.. Congrats Jav. It still looks amazing. Did they interview you or ask any questions? While it must be nice to get the attention, it seems pretty half ass if they never even contacted you.

yeah, one of my buddies kept pestering me to send some pics to kotaku so after a few beers I sent them an email. They had a few questions which I responded to - pretty cool to get a write-up like that!

Especially since it was posted later in the day on Saturday...their weekend updates are pretty slow, so you've had top-of-the-page for several hours now. Congrats bro.

Anyone read the third response on the Kotaku article, yet? Who wants to get together and just make the guy feel like shit or do you guys think the 46 replies with everyone against him suffice?

So how huge was the neck hug your daughter gave you? Awesome cabinet man.
