CAGiversary!

OK, let me begin. My PS3 is my favorite game console of this generation (and maybe any generation) and recently celebrated it's first birthday December 28th, 2008 (Which voided it's warranty...keep that in mind). I keep it at room temperature and dust it off now and then. I maintain it fairly well, even though I play it quite often. So now, I was using the web browser (I have been since my Laptop of 2 years also busted, though that one was admittedly my fault), and I notice that the PS3 freezes a few times when I use it. I suspected the multiple tabs with CAG and Youtube running at the same time might have clogged its memory, so I ignore it (this was a week or so ago). Then, I started getting into gamesharing this week (Not really relevant but kinda) and did that a few times. I was recently gamesharing and was about to download pixeljunk monsters when the console freezes. The button in the front wasn't shutting it off (those three fast beeps that you may/may not have heard), so I had to go for the back switch (which I hate doing). Then, I start up the beast again and it loads that Sony startup screen, but doesn't reveal the user options as it always does. So I try it 3 times and nothing. I go to my wii browser (the browser Im typing from currently) and get Sony's number. I call them, tell them whats up, and they say that their best guess was that the browser was loading while something else on the HDD was loading (somehow?) and it corrupted the data on my hard disk. So they say that (even though it was their error - I think, and my warranty JUST expired) I need to pay 150 bucks to get it repaired. But there's two more kicks to the balls. All of my gameshared games, game data (Almost 2000 hours accumulated Im guessing, maybe more, and its all gone. MGS final fight with "you know who" gone. GTA IV stuff, gone. Everything. Is. fucking. Gone. But that's not it. I forgot the password to my master account, and had to put in a fake B-day (Im 17 FYI), so all 30-40 of my trophies are gone. My Soul Calibur IV DLC gone. The Last Guy gone. Luckily, my secondary account held all of the home stuff and my tertiary holds most of my DLC games. So what Im asking CAG is that if someone knows any sort of solution to keep my spendings less than 150 bucks (sorry, 149). Id also like any help in if its actually fixable. I hear getting a new HDD might work, but I havent confirmed. First one of my favorite youtubers gets his ass partially shut down because of the Youtube war on WMG, now this. Damn...

Let me just say, if your HDD is broke, getting a new one WILL fix it. I constantly recommend that ANYONE with a console (especially PS3 and Wii since the internal memory isn't de-tachable) to back up saves every once in a while (On PS3 is very easy because you can use a USB flash drive).

2nd of all, your trophies are not gone if you can somehow do a password recovery or eventually remember how to get into your account.

I have had a similair experience on multiple occasions with my ps3. I had mine backed up though, so it wasn't that big of a deal to me. Mine has froze 3 times since I put a new hard drive in it. All of your trophies do stay though if you can verify your account. Sorry to hear, but best of luck to you. I would also recommend backing up every now and then.

Well, it doesn't sound like the hard drive is fried, so (and I'm guessing on this - I've never done it), you should be able to reformat the drive. You'll probably have to drop it into a PC to clear it off and then download the latest firmware and burn it to CD. You'll lose your save games, but it won't cost anything at least. Also, you can just sign back into PSN and get all the stuff you paid for - as for game sharing, you'll have to get their PSN ID/password and re-login as them. Anyone who has done this, please, correct me if I'm wrong.

Man, I got back into console gaming b/c I got sick of dealing with this crap on PC...

ductape be right. That's what I'd do. Format the HDD and re-try. If it works, you aren't out 150 bones and can still recover your gameshares at least.

But that doesn't solve your login/password problem. And without the DOB you won't be able to reset it.

As with everyone else, reformat the HDD. If it works, you may want to use this as a chance to order a bigger one now before you have a bunch of restarted data on it.

i hope everything turns out good, but in terms of the warranty expiring, there's really nothing you can do about that.

always write down the birthday you put in for something if using a fake bday!

so what does your main screen look like? just black?

sorry about your problem, i know this will not help but i thought it was a good time to say this. My brother and i got a wii when it launched and have both gotten it fixed for free out of warranty, mine just barely, like your PS3, and his was just two weeks ago. they said it was out of warranty, made sure it wasn't worked on before, sent a mailing label and gave us a new one year warranty like it was nothing. More companies should be so great to their customers. Sorry if i sound like i'm preaching.

Funny I had the exact same opposite experience with Nintendo CS. That's why I no longer buy Nintendo products.

Back on topic, I vote to format as well.

I'm glad others were able to read that and give advice but please for the sake of all that is holy, use multiple paragraphs next time.
