Forgive me for taking this a bit off-topic, but does anyone know if they still do this? I called them the other day asking about it, and from what they told me, they'll only repair systems under warranty free of charge. Anyone have any luck getting it done recently?
And no, I've never seen the soft-reset not work.
Actually, I had mine fixed up not more than a month ago. Works like brand-spankin' new too- I love it!
When you call, be sure to say you have Disc Read Errors- use those EXCACT words. They should ask if it's a thin model or not (actually, they should ask for model number and UPC code, so be sure you can get to the back of your system whn you call), when you purchased it, and what discs you're having trouble with. Answer as precisely as you can, and try to be diverse in your DRE title list- old games, new games, blue and black-bottom, and PS1 titles.
They should offer you a 'waived fee' repair, and offer to have you write down the info or just email. Pick email, it's alot to know.
If the guy you talked to didn't offer, call again later. And again and again, til you get an operator who'll do it!
And fair warning- if you've ever opened your PS2, they may just return it and charge you a diagnositc fee. Also, they just replace it with a refurbished unit instead of repair, so if you've used a skin on it or the like, you may need to try another route.
