I think my PS2's soft reset switch died...

cheapass Gundam

CAGiversary!
Spent all day yesterday playing SW: Battlefront, and when I was done, I was unable to power it off via the soft reset switch located above the disc tray switch.

Has anyone ever experienced this with their PS2?

Too bad Sony's free repair only covers DRE...

Forgive me for taking this a bit off-topic, but does anyone know if they still do this? I called them the other day asking about it, and from what they told me, they'll only repair systems under warranty free of charge. Anyone have any luck getting it done recently?

And no, I've never seen the soft-reset not work.

yeah my ps2 has the same thing wrong with it, also if that wasn't bad enough it seems i've been getting DRE's on blue discs also. My PS2 is falling apart.

Mine makes excessive noise spinning blue disc CD-ROMs after the system warms up. So how do you power up your PS2 now that the switch won't work? I haven't tried turning it on again after turning the main switch off last night.

I suspect the DRE repairs only pertain to systems within a certain manufacture date, otherwise the guy you talked to probably dosent have a clue about the free repair, you wouldnt beleive how many people DIDN'T know about this repair thing last year.

If you put two one-inch pieces of tape paralell around the hole on the disc, it should stop that. Try makin it 4 if it doesn't stop completely.
Should look like this:

Actually, I had mine fixed up not more than a month ago. Works like brand-spankin' new too- I love it!

When you call, be sure to say you have Disc Read Errors- use those EXCACT words. They should ask if it's a thin model or not (actually, they should ask for model number and UPC code, so be sure you can get to the back of your system whn you call), when you purchased it, and what discs you're having trouble with. Answer as precisely as you can, and try to be diverse in your DRE title list- old games, new games, blue and black-bottom, and PS1 titles.

They should offer you a 'waived fee' repair, and offer to have you write down the info or just email. Pick email, it's alot to know.

If the guy you talked to didn't offer, call again later. And again and again, til you get an operator who'll do it!

And fair warning- if you've ever opened your PS2, they may just return it and charge you a diagnositc fee. Also, they just replace it with a refurbished unit instead of repair, so if you've used a skin on it or the like, you may need to try another route.

I check it Monday night and was able to power it on and off using the soft reset button. Hopefully it's a one-time glitch. If it starts happening again then I probably need to get the unit repaired.

Thanks, so basically you just add more weight to the disc until the noise reduces? Woudln't the heat cause the tape to come off the disc after a while?

Yeah I'd becareful about using tape inside a system, or anything with adhesive, if you expect a lot of heat.

Question: are you using a Large modle PS2 with a HDD? because I remember that the installation was supposed to alter the function of the power/reset buttons in a way, I dont remember all the details but it had to do with that particular button.

Yeap, added a HDD to my fat PS2 a few months ago thanks to the CC deal on FFXI. The soft reset button is working again, it might have been a one-time glitch or perhaps having the unit on all day caused the circuit for the button to malfunction.

The HDD's installation was simple plug and play. It does not alter the switch physically. I think at most it just makes the switch park the HDD when a powerdown command is issued.

The reset switch has a known issue that only occurs when you PS2 has a Network Adapter.

With the network adapter installed, the reset switch can no longer reset the console, but instead puts it too sleep. Don't know why Sony decided to do this, but I am sure u can find more about it if u Google it.

If u press it really, really, REALLY super fast, u can sometimes still do a reset via the switch with the Network Adapter in place, but it is like a 50/50 chance.

Does this affect all models? Mine is a launch model and after adding the Network Adapter (in order to install the HDD) I never had any problems - I could still reset the console and put it to sleep via the soft reset button without any problems.

It's basically to keep you from cutting power to the system immdiatly if you hit it accidentally while the HDD is accessing.
