I posted earlier this morning stating that I had to have a girl transported to the hospital for alcohol poisioning last night, so look through my posts for those.
At 4:30 this morning, I got paged. We have a pretty strict policy here regarding guests, as in you have to be signed in by a resident of the building to enter (we have 24 hours security at the entrances). This may seem extreme to many people, but our campus isn't in the greatest neighborhood of a pretty large city (Boston), so we have a lot of outsiders (ie homeless people) try to get in.
So, I get paged this morning that there's a guest who can't get in touch with her friend to sign her in. Normally, the policy is "too bad," but the supervisor of the security (which incidentially is my other job during the week), tells me the girl is really upset, crying etc. So I figure I'll be a nice guy and see what I can do.
I get down there and she starts bitching me out. She's drunk, she's telling me that I'm an asshole, and that the guest policy is unfair (she thinks she shouldn't have to be signed in). I started to explain why the policy was in place, and she absolutely went off on me about how she didn't care. So after her yelling at me for about 45 seconds, I shout at her to sit down and STFU. I told her that I'm the only person who can decide if she can come into the building or not, and if she didn't apologize to the security officer and I for yelling at us, and that I was going to explain to her in detail why the policy was in place... or I would call the police and have her removed for tresspassing (which I have the authority to do on a private campus). She listened, and I helped her eventually, but I couldn't believe the girl was flipping out at me after waking me up at 4:30 AM because her friend shut off her cell phone.
Today, I had 3 pages where they paged the wrong person. I wish I was joking. I went to go deal with the situations and called the security office stating there wasn't anyone there. "Oh, I guess it was another building." Incredible, and a complete waste of my time.
Also, I had a resident bring in her own bed for a medical reason. The university doesn't allow people to remove furnature (aka the bedframe) without approval, which she had, but our facilities department is basically closed on Saturday nights with a few people on call incase a water main breaks or something. They, and my supervisor said they we couldn't help this poor girl and she'd have to keep both her beds in this tiny single bedroom which clearly couldn't fit both beds. And she desperately needed the new bed because she had emergency surgery this morning. So finally, I broke the rules, flipped over the bed and kicked it apart and threw it in my office here. It's pretty ridiculous that at a major university everyone says "Too bad, wait till Monday."
But ya, that's just sample of what I get paged for in one 24 hour period. Keep in mind that I'm on call 1 out of 5 weekday overnights and weekends a year (all year round) and have to deal with this crap.
