Not FPS like Halo. I want to get a few more games like Ikaruga. After playing Ikaruga on GC, I know I want to get into some more.

From what I can see, the systems with the most shooters are Dreamcast and Saturn. Luckily I've got both--an Dreamcast (NSTC) and a two Saturns (1 region free and one JAP only).

So, which system is easier to collect shooters for? I want to get a ton of great shooters, but I'd rather not spend $500+ doing it. And I absolutely refuse to pay $120+ for a game like Radiant Silvergun, so that's out of the question. Can someone reccomend which system are start buying for, and which will be least expensive? I know they'll be pricey, which will be least pricey?

The PS2 has some quality shooters. R-type Final can picked up very cheap these days. And don't forget Contra: Shattered Soldier and Gradius V. These are much cheaper than throwing down the scratch you'll need for a quality Saturn or Dreamcast shooter.
I thought Gunbird 2 for the Dreamcast was really good. It can be found for a reasonable price.
I forgot about that one. It's a hidden gem.

there are plenty of shooters on PS1 as well, here are a few that I have:

- Einhander
- R-Type: Delta
- R-Types
- G- Darius
- Raystorm
- Raycrisis
- Strikers 1945
- Raiden Project
- Mobile Light Force (I don't remember the actual name of the shooter)

and some ps2 ones:

- Gradius V
- Mobile Light Force 2
- Castle Shikigami 2

I also like the Gunbird games, Gunbird2 being the better of the two.

Personally, I really like Radirgy for the Dreamcast though it seems to be an aquired taste.

Star Solider for the GameCube kicks a ton of ass.

Sokyugurentai is a quality PS1 shooter.

As far as the Saturn goes, you're gonna wind up paying for the shooters since they're all more or less collectables. Radiant Silvergun is one of the more expensive ones. However, games like Batsugun still go for a nice penny.

A great way to learn about Saturn Shooters is with Yakumo's RetroCore videos. There's 60 different games that he shows and reviews. A bit of a large file but it's pretty much the most complete picture you'll ever get of the shooters on the Saturn -

Ditto for the Dreamcast Shooter Special -

I play alot of shmups(i'm guessing you are only intrested in space shooters) I own the following:

Ikaruga
Mars Matrix
Gunbird 2
Castle Shigimaki 2
Gradius V
Rtype Final
Lightening Force (yes that's how it's spelled on the box)
Xyanide
Bangai 0
Einhander
Sol Divide
Nanostray

I recommend all of them except Sol Divide and Nanostray(unless you find this one cheap)
I highly recommend you get a arcade stick it makes the whole expereince that much better.

The PS2 has 90% of the shooters the DC does, and some of the quality ones from the Saturn as well. I'd honestly say the PS2 is going to be the cheapest, because many of the shooters have been re-released in their "greatest hits" forms titled "The Best" and can be imported for around $30 - $35.... you can build a sizable collection fast.

The only truly exclusive awesome shmups that I can think of for the DC are Border Down and Under Defeat, but Border Down is one of those $120 + games you didn't want to buy. Zero Gunner 2 is cool, but not for everyone, same with Giga Wing 1 + 2 though I enjoyed all the games. Mars Matrix is decent as well.

Castle Shikigami 2 can be found on the PS2 at any EB / GS for under $10 used, and it's pretty decent.

Gunbird is also good, but that's available on the PS2 as well as part of the Gunbird Premium Collection, which has both Gunbird 1 + 2 on one disc. I believe there is another version that has both Gunbirds as well as both Strikers, and that's cool.

If you're just starting out, you need to stick to domestic stuff until you're absolutely sure that shmups will be something you want to invest in. Here's a decent list of not so expensive domestic games:

PS2:

Gradius V
Castle Shikigami 2

PS1:

Strikers 1945

Dreamcast:

Mars Matrix
Giga Wing 1 + 2 (not sure if these two games are still cheap, though)

These games aren't the best of the best (except maybe Gradius V) but they give you a rough idea of what to expect. But yea, just to reiterate, the PS2 has a ton of the old classic shmups as well as some hot new ones like Ibara, Dodonpachi Daioujou, Mushihimesama, and ESP Galuda. Plus, it's very very simple to mod a PS2 these days, there is an awesome guide for it right here on CAG.

PS2
Mushihimesama - I've heard good things about this game
Ibara - Real good soundtrack
Homura
Twinkle Star Spirits: La Petite Princesse - classic SNK game
Castle Shigimaki 2

Mushihimesama was just re-released in Japan, Homura and Twinkle Star Spirits will be re-released in November. All of them are $35 on play-asia. Ibara is $65

DC
Mars Matrix - excellent
Bangai-0 - last boss is impossible without cheats
GiGaWing 1 & 2 - fun games

Thats all I can think about for the moment

Hell, I have unopened copies of Layer Section (which I believe is RayForce) for the PC. It's pretty much arcade perfect as far as I can tell.

I think I have 2 or 3 laying around, I'm willing to let them go for cheap/trade.

Having re-watched the RetroCore shooter specials, I again suggest them highly.

I wouldn't recommend getting into Shmups. Your wallet will cry. Ah, whatever. The DC definitely has some great offerings and I'd look into that system first if it's between that and the Saturn. The only suggestion I have based on what I've played is Under Defeat... the game is absolutely fantastic. It's still available (though you'll have to import it) so if you're even a little interested, I'd get it now before it goes out of print and becomes impossible to get.
I also like Raystorm for the PS1. That one is somewhat rare but doesn't cost much. I never played RayCrisis.
Just make sure you dont buy a PS1 game called 'Ray Tracers' I bought that thinking I was getting a shmup, and I got a lame-o racing game instead.

A couple of you mentioned Giga Wing 2. Is that the only 4-Player Shooter? It's the only one I ever played.

UN Squardran is another one of my favorites, but that's for SNES.

Talk to Javeryh as he is a big fan (if my memory serves me). It was an older post but I got a link from it with tons of PC based shooters that are very nice. As well if I remember correctly a website based solely on shooters and their reviews.

That may help you pinpoint the interesting ones yourself.

I am looking for that old thread.. it may not have been him who posted the site...

heres a few I came across

I wasnt wrong.. here is the link:

Your cheapest route is to probably go and get a NES and or Genesis. systems are cheap, games are cheap and there are tons of great shooters IMO. 1942, legendary wings, gaurdian legend, ranger X, I could go on and on. I own every major system and constantly play the retro shooters.

However, I'm the kinda guy that always goes against the grain so you may not want to put to much weight behind my opinions.

I bought Radiant brand new when it came out for $50. Sold it last year for $250 since I never played it any more.

UN Squardran is another one of my favorites, but that's for SNES.
My FAVORITE shooter of all time. The SNES version is oddly enough better than the arcade one. PS1 has some interesting shooters, too, including Parodious and Sexy Parodious. I'm also a huge Macross fan so I'd have to recommend Macross: Valkyrie Scramble for SNES and the Macross shooter for Sega Saturn/PS1 (essentially the same game).

If you want to get in to shumps the best consoles to get are the Pce and the saturn or if you want to go the much cheaper root the Dreamcast and ps2.

My favorite shooter is In the hunt if anybody cared to know

I'd have to agree; the PC Engine and the Saturn are your best choices for shooters. The best selection of shooters are on the PC Engine, however they are usually imports (same with Saturn). Cheapest route - PS1. It has some great shooters and it won't hurt your wallet as much (I think I paid $10 at most for any one of my PS1 shooters). Sega CD also has some cheap shooters as well, but not the best. My personal favorite for the Sega CD is Robo Aleste.

Another vote here for the TG-16/PC Engine... amazing how many good shooters there are for that system... a very high percentagebased on total number of games available... the games are hard to find outside of ebay, so I had to do alot of emulation on my PSP 1.5

I just picked up Thunder Force V for the PS1. I had played this back in the day as a rental and tried to buy a copy to no avail. After playing it for about an hour or so it is so much better then I remember. I'm not sure but I think this may have slipped under a lot of shooter fans radars. I highly recommend this little gem it plays and looks fantastic. There is a little slowdown at points but it does not detract much from the experience
Galactic Attack for the Saturn is cool and should be inexpensive to buy.
Seconded. I was -very- happy with this little cheapie. Isn't it actually Rayforce, prequel to Raystorm? Same ship design...

Raystorm is beautiful and a must have. Avoid Raycrisis, it's not worth worth it.

Another good Saturn shooter is Darius Gaiden. I liked G Darius on PS, but it wasn't well-recieved. Be sure to try to track down Einhander for PS if you can... hard but beautiful.

Granted the SNES had a nice cache of shooters... real winners (Axelay) to total failures (Phalanx).

Honestly, as it stands now, the Wii is a VERY cheap way of getting some awesome shooters.

If they keep up this pattern, we'll get alot of awesome TG-16 shmups in addition to what we already have.

Yep! Soldier Blade and Super Star Soldier for Wii VC (orig TG-16) are both excellent, I've been playing them alot lately.

I really recommend Gradius V on PS2.. big surprise there huh?
