Great lowball Punkmaggit, I hope this helps out :)

Im a bit disappointed with all of the pissing and moaning about a previously absent sniper, but really... if people wanted an item they would have been put their max up front... give it their all... because this auction is also to help the seller. Its not like there wasnt a good 7 minutes before the end and people kept an eye (or should have) on the items they REALLY wanted.

I checked it in the last five mins myself, but I couldn't muster the funds to get what I wanted.
I was done with this, but I resent the implication that I (and others) don't care about helping punkmaggit. These lowballs are always a spot to get a great deal, but I also like being able to help out fellow CAGs who need the cash.

I'm about to send 138 bucks to him, so it kind of annoys me that you seem to be implying I might be only in it for myself. I sucked it up and paid 7 extra bucks for something he bid on, and had no problem doing it. I don't really appreciate you trying to call people who were bidding here all week trying to help him out and excusing someone who came in and sniped. Ass backwards.
I just wanted to make sure everyone else saw how you also fail to realize exactly what happened, I am wasn't going to comment on it because you can't grasp why people are angry. xD

So, whos the idiot here? The guy who mockingly quotes you, or the guy who fails to understand the situation?

That's what I thought. :)

Goodnight CAG
(My god these node errors are ridiculous!)

No, I read the posts and understand the situation just fine. It's true that I can't grasp why people are angry, since auctions and sniping go hand in hand and there should be expectation of it.

I'm not defending his tactics, it's just ridiculous of people to get so angry over something that could have been defended against very easily. Hell he did it with two minutes left, plenty of time to put in higher bids. Apparently I'm the only one that copies the whole listing into Notepad (item number, title) and then just change the bid amount.

Perhaps for future lowballs the rules should require posting the whole title with the bid?

This is sensible, and I think the right solution.

When/if I have my lowball, I'll not only have a random endtime but also say that after a specified time (say the last 6 hours or so), all bids must include the item name to be accepted. That seems fair.

Sounds fair. It's hard to make these lowball sales 100% fair, but for the most part, the sellers are doing their best.

Seems like a good solution that should be suggested to dv8.

It's not ass backwards. Trying to villify somebody who clearly stayed within the parameters of the lowball, put their maximum up front and gave an opportunity for people to counterbid (and 7 minutes is pretty generous albeit short, considering I've been sniped within the last 3 seconds on ebay) in an auction format designed to help a fellow CAG (in this case to make some payments) is "ass backwards."

Bottom line: There should be NO complaints or whining about the outcome of this auction. Whether it was brought on by somebody "feeling" it was unfair to have another bidder snipe or because they didn't get an item as cheap as they had hoped. I don't know (or care) what the motive for the whining is, but it is more than obvious that there is some serious selfishness involved with the amount of whining that took place regarding a set of legitimate bids... that would have maximized the benefit for Punkmaggit. The people who seriously wanted a few things (including you) stayed the course and kept themselves updated with the items/bids going on... and props to you (and those others), but whether it "annoys" you or not that I point out the selfishness or not... it's reality.

Now I have to step in again, you make a funny post about the concept of sniping and get all bent out of shape when it actually happens, hypocrite.

Why should I post the names of items to make it easier for you or anyone else for that matter to simply copy it and add $0.50? I'm here to pay the lowest on the items I want (hence lowball) and not interested in losing the items that I want so I wait to the end. I have a limited gaming budget and can't be spending ebay prices on stuff so excuse me for trying to get the best deal I can on CHEAP ass gamer. If your cheapass bid $22 on FFIII to begin with I wouldn't have bothered because I don't want to own it for that amount, maybe you'll man up and bid a better price next time.

If I would have thrown my bids in around 10 I would have been outbid on the majority so I didn't. Punkmaggit said the auction was ending around 11, not exactly at 11. That could have meant 10:56, 10:58 or whatever. If that happened I'd be SOL and would have missed out. I took a chance that I submitted my bid too late but I was not going to take a chance of having to watch over 15+ items in the last minute get nickel and dimed.

I've lost way too many items over the last few lowballs exactly because I bid too early and was beat at the end. I understand this isn't ebay but it's still an auction format and until such time that sellers prohibit sniping or listing by number I'll proceed differently. One remedy that I think can make it into the "official lowball rules" is actually requiring a higher incremental bid amount in the last hour or day of an auction or incentivize people to bid early or the aforementioned forcing to list the title of the game are good suggestions. What I would also recommend is the needless bantering back and forth and don't bid on this and I won't bid on that or whatever the hell you do for hours upon end during these auctions.

You're certainly under no obligation to. I don't really care if you feel bad about it, I'm sure if I were in your shoes I wouldn't either. You're well within your rights to do whatever you want within the context of the rules. I don't expect anything else than for people to act in their own self interest, after all why should you care about pissing off a bunch of strangers on the internet?

What I do have a problem with is that people who have been in the lowball since it started participating and bumping up the prices of items are made to seem like the "bad guys". Ask punkmaggit whether he appreciates the numerous bids and bumps given by myself and others throughout the week, even if some of our bids were "lowball". Given that I spent more in this lowball than just about anybody (pending final totals), I don't think it's really necessary for me to defend the amount I'm willing to "man up" and give punk fair values for his items.

Erm, I'm re-inserting myself into this debate so I'm not sure if this issue has already been resolved, but I'm not sure that I understand the points of people arguing that snipers have the right to do whatever they want because someone who doesn't "bid their max" right away isn't serious about wanting the item.

There seems to be some kind of fundamental misunderstanding of how a lowball auction operates compared to the ebay/proxy bidding auction that most people are familiar with. You see, in terms of how an auction generally operates, ebay is the odd format out. The concept of a "maximum bid" is relatively new in the scheme of things and is quite unlike how auctions outsite of ebay generally operate. A traditional auction is a knock-down, drag out fight of dollars and cents: a slow war of attrition where people compete against each other to see who can outspend others without themselves overpaying. They have to rely on their own judgment and discretion rather than an automated system that automatically outbids others up to a pre-determined price. From the snooty snoots at a Sotheby's auction squabbling over a Faberge Egg to farmers fighting over a cow, it's really the same everywhere. They're both there with their numbered bid paddles ready to raise them every five seconds until they're finally out or they've won.

It's common sense that you don't come out with guns blazing because you need to gage the interest of other participants in the auction. You may be willing to pay up to a certain amount, but because if you win you pay what you bid (and not the closest opponent's bid plus fifty cents) you can drastically overpay if you're the only one interested in the item. For instance, in the first lowball I ever participated in, I jumped three bids from a combined total of $49 to a combined total of $85. I was too used to my ebay bidding style where I make an overwhelming initial bid to save myself the trouble of competing with others over piddling amounts of money. Could I have gotten my stuff for cheaper if I had been willing to get into the mud? Probably, and I've been a lot more strategic in my bidding habits since. Incremental bidding isn't a lack of seriousness, it's just how a traditional auction operates. There's nothing hard about this; people have just forgotten the principles of off-ebay auctioning.

That's the problem. In a lowball/auction there should be no concept of "bad guys" ... there's no subjectivity. There's an auction and bidding. The people habitually participating aren't being made to look like "bad guys" in their capacity as participants... people are being cast as "bad guys" because of their incessant whining and bickering around "sniping."

THIS is the point I was trying to make somewhere in the middle of my drug-induced ramblings. (I'm pretty doped up on Theraflu, Aleve, and Amoxicillin right now.) I made several references to the OP as an "auctioneer" in the spirit of thinking of this as a hybrid of house auctions and internet auctions, with a timeframe end instead of a "going twice" end.

Just in the spirit of everyone naming off their totals, PLEASE someone correct me if I'm wrong on this and my math is wrong from the wooziness I'm feeling in my head but... it seems my total came out to a nice, even $200. Would some kind soul out there add my totals up and correct me if I'm wrong? My consciousness will thank you.

That's what you're saying, fine. That's not the tone which is being taken by everyone who's defending it. Let's not act like all the bitching is heading in one direction here.

Again, my issue isn't with the snipe itself but with the deliberate omission of the names which (while within the rules) to me represents an effort to confuse people and not allow them time to re-bid if they choose to. That's fine for the person doing the sniping (and, objectively, is a good strategy), but I don't see how you could argue that discouraging counter bids through something like that maximizes value for punkmaggit, which is what you were advocating for at the top of this page, right?

Now I'm curious, what exactly do you need another copy of FFIII when your trade list says you have x2 already? Are you a flipper? Do you hoard games and use them as trade fodder?

I already had one copy, the second was the one I just added. And I'll gladly answer you: It's a Christmas present for my younger brother. FFIII was my favorite game growing up, and his as well - our cousins had it and played it all the time and is actually the reason we pooled our allowances to buy our SNES (our first console). When I went off to college we split up our (at the time) combined SNES collection. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure he ended up with Super Mario RPG, which is why I no longer have it (this was 6+ years ago, so I could be wrong). When I saw it in the lowball I thought it would be a good time to get it so he could have a copy again.

FFIII is still my favorite game of all time.

Curiosity satisfied?

I don't see it as discouraging bids at all. Bidding by reference number is more practical when posting a large number of bids in a single post. If anything, it makes it easier for people who ARE keeping track of the auction to identify their items because I can attest to losing my item by overlooking a wall of text with my item in the middle of another bidders post.

Ignoring the timing of the post in conjunction with the content is your prerogative. I think you make a solid point, but so do I, we're just looking at it differently. Agree to disagree.

Neiname, for my own part, I apologize for the nasty words I used earlier. I still don't agree with what you did, but lashing out at you like that was uncalled for. If I expect a certain standard of etiquette here I'm a hypocrite if I don't adhere to it myself. So from one (former) Masshole to another, I'm sorry for cursing you out (people from MA lose it sometimes, what can I say).

So how hard is it to post both? It's copy-pasting directly from page 1. Most of us do it. It aids those looking at numbers, and aids to sort through 5 pages of bids to see if you got outbid. It gives others a fair shot afterwards.

And once again, no one is actually bitching about sniping. It's solely because he purposely took off the name (and probably put sections out of order) for no reason other than not giving others a fair chance to outbid him after he outbids someone. Yes, it's happened before, but rarely does it happen that close to the end with 20 bids. One or two doesn't take long, but trying to match 20 things with the first page seconds from the close time? Good thing I was fast at matching.

you seemed to delete the final bids of all of the items.... so now you have no proof what people did or did not bid...

might have a hard time getting some people to pay now.. i know i won like 2 maybe 3 items and wrote teh prices down last night.. but usually i think you would want to keep those prices up until the sale was completeed
