Ice T: Soulja Boy single-handedly killed hip hop
Old.

Watch that dude's response, it's quite ludicrous.
Yeah I checked out the entire thing.

The best part by far though is Soulja Boy's report card song. This is what I heard - "I'm stupid, I'm failing HS, I can't learn simple english grammar, time to go yell at the teacher for some undeserved grades!"
SUPAHMAN DAT HOOOOOOOOOO!

He needs to be destroyed.
Yes and I've found the perfect weapon...

Bwahahahaha!!!

He is right though. The game of rap and hip hop has changed. And for the worse. Originally it was quite thought provoking and scared the government with its radical ideas. Now you have LAFFY TAFFY, BACK DAT ASS UP, YOUUUUUUUUUUUUU and SLAP HER WITH A DICK.

This shit is so laughable. Those kids in the video with their fake chains and the one in front's weird eyebrows. "Real talk" hahahaha. The sad part is there are tons of kids watching that video and not laughing at them but laughing with them.

I hate how this country idolizes people like him.I still hear "SUPA MAN DAT HO! NOW WATCH ME YOUUUUUU!" constantly on Xbox Live.

But, in all fairness, hip hop never had far to fall...

See I can't completely blame Soulja Boy. He's just trying to make his money.

I put most of the fault on the fools that buy his crap. If there's no market for his stuff, there's no Soulja Boy.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the average American.

Agreed. Rap has become empty fluff; no substance. To me it's no different like trash pop music except more vulgar. Soulja Boy's attitude towards Ice-T pisses me off too. He needs to show so damn respect for someone who paved the way for rap and musicians moving to television.

there really is no good rap these days, it's all the generic crunk rap garbage, "i gots moneez, i drink kristal, look at my phat rimz, etc." all these new guys are so stupid and ignorant, and the sad thing is there's a whole world of apparently even more stupid people out there that actually worship these retards and think this music is cool, or dope or whatever, the whole world is getting dumber and rap music is one of the biggest things that are leading it down that road, along with celebrity news/reality shows, and the stupid fucking movies that keep releasing like "date movie" "epic movie" superhero movie" and coming soon: "disaster movie" (i shit you not, google it) it's sad. Maybe i'll move to north canada where hopefully rap hasn't made society completely retarded yet.

I'm not sure if it's at quite the level as it is down in the US of A, but it's starting to take it's toll here. You can't walk through the hallway at school or sit on the bus without some fucking retard thinking that blasting soldier boy on their cell phone is a good idea and that everyone wants to hear it.

I remember when rap and hip-hop actually used to be good before it started going downhill in the late 90's.

Even though it's been out for a while, this accurately portrays the current state of Hip-Hop, and a couple other things.

Well I have to disagree with you to an extent in that there is still good rap and hip hop as well as stuff that has aged very well. The real problem is that you really have to go digging for it, since only the crap gets play on the radio. Even some of the more mainstream guys who have skill and something intelligent to say are on the very edge of the mainstream consciousness and are quickly buried by the wealth of garbage that gets spewed out.

If you actually want to find some good hip hop, then go grab an emusic account. Its out there, but its just a shame that people have to go and search for it.

This is totally true. The good stuff is getting harder and harder to find.

Hip-hop, like any genre, is just having some growing pains right now. It's due for a lil' musical revolution and who knows when that will come. As a life-long fan of hip-hop, I'm not too worried about it, though Soulja Boy and these other clowns are hot garbage.

The thread's gone this far and nobody's mentioned that ICE-T of all people is commenting on the state of hiphop. Last time I checked Body Count isn't being cited as a major milestone in the Golden Age of Hiphop.

I appreciate that soulja's a fuckwit, and I feel you, Ice. But leave hiphop criticism to the musicians who went beyond gangsta to elevate the genre to something bigger and better.

So was Enron. Just because you're trying to be an affluent dick doesn't mean you deserve any respect.

Hell I think in some cases the more money one makes the more I dislike them.

As to the topic at hand: I'm not into rap but I dig what T has done for the history of the music. Plus i detest Souljaboy because my 13 year old sister is now singing SUPERMAN DAT HOOOO around the house.

That's not fucking natural.

I didn't say I liked or respected him, just that I couldn't completely blame him.

And he didn't do anything illegal to get where he is. He just made a song, a dance, and an image that people like your sister are buying into, that's all.

As much as I enjoy Ice T, I have to stick up for the young Soulja Lad.

He's 17 people, he's making money to better his and his family's lives. It's easy to hate the creator, but it's really the audience you and Ice T are mad at. It's embarassing to see someone like Ice T engaged in an online battle with Soulja Boy. Ice T should be above this, if you hate Soulja Boy, ignore him.

I have no problem with calling out the hip hop audience, but come on... Ice T and his son just look like nerds doing this.

As much as Soulja Boy's music sucks, you have to admit that the Yah song is pretty funny.

Also, SVU is an awesome show.
Why?
Because the richer they get the more of a- if you'll excuse the word- c*nt they become. See: musicians, actors, politicans, my boss.

I really don't respect rich people just because they have money and I really don't understand why people use the excuse "well he's makin' money so he must be okay".

But I guess that's the proleteriat in me.

It depends where you come from. A poor kid from the projects earning a few million for his dance is only as wrong as the audience is for buying it.

Other celebrities who get rich off of their parents' fame are a little less sympathetic.
This is why Little Jon is one of the few rappers I actually respect. He's not a complete retard like most others in the business.
Lol.

You realize that's not Lil Jon, it's someone mocking modern rap (in the style of Lil Jon), right?

You hit the nail on the head. The only rap I listen to has lyrics that actually mean something. And there's very few of those artists nowadays. Damn, hip hop could have been great music.

Ugh, again, hip-hop isn't dead. That's like saying rock is dead because most of the shit on the radio is just that, shit. Give me a break.

Soulja Boy isn't killing hip hop. Nor is he particularly helping it survive. It would be around with or without him. I don't like his music, but he's one fish in an abundant lake.

And Ice T''s second video was ridiculous. " Hurricane Chris I'm sorry I was mad I don't have a problem with you. " What a pussy. Hurricane Chris sucks ass. How can you have something against Soulja Boy and not Hurricane Chris? If anything, I'm sick of everyone pretending like Soulja Boy is the only bad rapper out there and then going on about how Wayne and Rick Ross are good.

It took rock and/or roll about fifteen years to really ramp up into something above and beyond an adolescent-minded fad genre (that was basically turbo-charged, deep-fried blues and country), and took another 25-30 years for it to collapse into a Clear Channel sinkhole of sanitized shit. Rap's comparable rise and fall took maybe twenty years. I think the comparison demonstrates the inherent limitedness of the latter genre, as well as the decimation of our attention spans and willingness to be intellectually stimulated. And by "our", I unfortunately am referring to the general population.

Today's Rap: take two minor chords or arpeggios, about 90 beats per minute, add subwoofer-pushing bass, a generous serving of near-tribal misogynistic chants, extremely repetitive nonsensical exclamations, mix and remix to ghetto-and-hilljack-lowbrow 'perfection'. Serves far too many people.

That's the way that the business is. However, genre's survive past that. One thing that upsets me is when people say that everyone was tired of metal and then Kurt Cobain came out and saved rock. Well, that may have been true in a mainstream sense, but metal was very alive in the early 90s. It's just that the media wrung the genre dry so that it couldn't be marketable ( in that form ) anymore. I think the quality of music in the mainstream is irrelevant to the health of the genre. Way I see it, people go in there to make money and get big. It's not that the really inept music is what people "want" now, it's just that it's easy to make and people aren't introduced to anything better. A lot of people don't take effort to look for quality music, they just pick and choose what they like from the radio, MTV, etc. Beyond that, you have great music.

In the first tape, Ice-T told Chris to take the fucking beads out of his hair. He didn't say anything about his music.

You're right, maybe Ice T actually likes Chris and is simply singling out Soulja Boy for sucking.

You're just glad cause your ass is old.

"Fixificated."

I really don't envy the cultural climate all the little mooks, "winjas", and emo bitchboys are growing up in and in turn contaminating. Have 'fun'.

A lot of people don't take effort to look for quality music, they just pick and choose what they like from the radio, MTV, etc.

See, but that's just it. With the splintering of the 'supergenres' into sub(n)-genres because of the multiple ways bands and artists can promote themselves, with all of the noise out there, only the truly Lowest Common Denominator gets any sort of push by the record companies, who, as we all know, are in a fuckton of trouble. The baby bath-shallow music that's left influences the culture to act and think likewise. It's easy for me to say that I uniformly hate Country, but I don't. It wasn't so bad twenty years ago. Now, it's like freaking Teletubbies for Middle American adults.* Is that condescending as hell? I don't care, because it's true.

We may not exactly be passengers on the Axiom yet, but our minds are already there.

*--It's also where a lot of people my age and above who lost touch with rock right around the time Motley Crue first split up turned to, as evidenced by a lot of '80s hard rock bands riding the jocks of today's country superstars. Where I'll dig a little, they couldn't deal with a post-Nevermind scene. And they became their parents, too. That happens.
