If I could have only one thing for Christmas it would be General Gaming Thread #18
I first hit
Hanshan Port

But now I'm pissed off. I just got out of the part where
you drive the buggy to get to where the Matriarch is. So, I got inside. I died 3 times trying to get through the first room. I spent 30 minutes on that fucking dumb puzzle for turning the power back on. Then I fixed the line on the roof. I then got up the the part with the reactor, died at the hands of two of the geth destroyers, and died, and now I have to restart my frickin thing from the first room after I got out of the buggy. I'm fuckin' pissed!
Maybe not high enough level for that area yet? I dunno. Maybe wrong squad?

I hate to say it, but Cheapy's right:
the shotgun pwns.

more TP tonight...might throw something in the 360 too, just don't know yet. Been writing my paper for english, just finishing up now and it's been over themes in fight club, and now I just feel like watching the movie again.

Backlogs suck. I am trying to decide what game to play since I beat AC. I don't want to start something that takes ages to beat (aka Mass Effect) since I kinda want to fly through my backlog starting with the games I can complete the fastest first. Out of K&L, Tomb Raider legend, and Bio Shock what would you guys suggest starting first? I started Bio Shock awhile back but never beat it due to losing interest half way.
Panzer Dragoon Orta is so great. Why aren't there more games like it?

I'll tell you why, cuz everyone sucks.
Have you played Sin & Punishment? That's also a great rail shooter.
Have you played Sin & Punishment? That's also a great rail shooter.
Never played it, but I guess I should

Oh, Mass Effect.

So for the Completionist/Ally achievements, the GameFAQs guide says you need to complete 15 Missions and 45 Assignments. So I'm just before
Illos
, and I've been going through and completing every assignment I can.

Then, I count them, and realize I can't get 45--even if I do the tedious mineral collecting--because I missed a few on the Citadel
because you can't go back there after stealing the Normandy
and Feros
I apparently killed a couple assignment-related people instead of Thorian Gassing them
, as well as a couple others--I can only get 43.

Well, I was planning on another playthrough anyway. But now I'll need four to get all of the ally achievements.

Blah.

Geometry Wars DS is kinda cool but the lack of a good control scheme kills it for me. After playing GW:DS though, I now have much higher hopes for Geometry Wars Wii and can't wait to pick it up.

Anyone think that they might release Galaxies on 360 and PS3 as a XBLA / PSN game though?

galaxies on the Wii is alot of fun. I took one home from work this weekend and played around with it some. You can use either the Wiimote and nunchuck or a classic controller. Both work fine and it's a good time waster or something to do when you've got like 30 minutes or so to kill.
Yeah, you can't get all the Mass Effect achievements without playing the game at least 4 times
Can't you normally do it in three, though? One Paragon/one Renegade, one anything/one hardcore/one insanity, and two different allies for each playthrough?
Can't you normally do it in three, though? One Paragon/one Renegade, one anything/one hardcore/one insanity, and two different allies for each playthrough?
You're right, I miscounted the number of allies.

The only tough part is getting Liara's ally achievement since you get her later than all the other characters.
Thanks for the suggestions you fucking rock...
Bioshock is like 8 hours long, so if you're half way through it you should finish it the fastest. Tomb Raider is only ~6 hours, but I didn't like it so it felt alot longer.
On the bright side, though, when I did have Vista, Crysis configured itself to run in Very High mode with all the DX10 stuff, and it was running fine at the 360 resolution (1280 X 720 or something). Does the very high mode in XP give you all the DX10 effects then?
From my Pepsi Challenge of Crysis on XP vs. Vista very high modes, it looked about the same. A critical eye will notice a very slight difference, but not one worth worrying about, since it runs better in XP. I saw pictures on a site that had a direct comparison, but I don't remember where.

Thanks dude seriously for the suggestions. Will finish Bio Shock tonight and play Tomb Radier tomorrow. Knowing how long they are really helps me out so thanks again Trakan. :applause:

Bioshock is fairly long for a FPS. I beat it in like 10 hours, and I usually fly through games.

Never played Tomb Raider. Kane and Lynch is short, 5-7 hours. On easy, take off about an hour and a half.

I think I'm actually just gonna run it on high settings at a nice resolution and frame rate and all that jazz... I'll use Very High if I go to Vista sometime in the future.

It runs better on high anyway. Very high really just has better HDR and effects. It's sweet, and it hung around 30 fps for most of the game, but during the last boss fight, it chugged. That was at 1680x1050 though. Very high will be nice with a 9800GTX, or whatever Nvidia's next high end card will be.

Hmm so Bio is around 8-10 hrs then? I'm about half way through it I just lost interest in the game for some reason. Seems K&L and Tomb Raider are about same length wise then. I may start one of those up then, and save Bio for last. Thanks for your input Calamity, I appreciate it. :)

It's weird in Gears of War though... it's got GFW Live, and I'm used to the live interface running like shit on the 360. It's weird to hit a button and have the thing respond instantly.

Game looks fuckin' nice, too.

Hell yeah it looks nice. I'm glad I sold my 360 version when I did. And it's nice to play that game at 60 fps with 8x anisotropic, with better textures and everything to boot.

Don't ask how or why, but I'm back on Vista. Found out what those issues were a result of -- the fact that like... every part that I got is unlocked and designed for people who do OC-ing. I need to get some cooling stuff if I wanna run at ridiculous speeds like that, but I turned down the speed of the video card in particular to a less insane level for now and it's rock solid. Phew.

So tonight looks like more ME.

Tomorrow I'm off so it will be PS3 day where I plan to hit EOJ and Uncharted for sure. Maybe fire up NBA2K for the first time, or else start R&C or continue Stranglehold, we'll see.

Still plugging away at the awesomeness that is Folklore.

I rented Kane and Lynch last night and really wasn't impressed. The controls were awful for me. My friend enjoyed it though, so maybe it just wasn't for me.

fixing to call it tonight. finally going to get some play time tomorrow. a mass effect is getting traded in at work, might pick it up. haven't decided yet.

I put some effort into importing real wrestlers into Fire Pro Wrestling R. So now I can get my ass kicked by familiar faces.

I'm still waiting for my copy to come in at work. the distributor we order from messed up our shipment.

Try importing authentic move lists and character models into the Dreamcast Japanese import version. Good times and pages and pages of translated menu items/moves.

Still love that game. That game, Crazy Taxi and Capcom vs. SNK are the three reasons I fire up my Dreamcast.

Mass Effect has horrible combat, and sequences where if you die you have to sit though 5 mins of cut scenes and loading.

Couple that with horrible framerate problems, texture pop-in like crazy, auto-save feature sucking, and inventory management being a piece of shit, and yeah you get a step back from Jade Empire.

I might just sell it and wait for the inevitable PC version.

The only thing that is cool are the conversations.
I wanted this to be good so badly.

Played more ME last night. This is game is just so addictive, I just want to keep playing. I was pretty tired, but I couldn't stop--everytime I wanted to save and quit, I kept saying "ah just a little further" or "ah, lemme talk to one more person".

I'm
at Peak 15 trying to get to the Magistrate
.

That's too bad that you don't like it, but your issues are more personal preference than anything. Many things about the game take a while to get used to because of the lack of tutorials. I don't think there's anything you can say about the combat that makes it "horrible" that isn't your own opinion.

The saving issues can't be blamed on the game if you forgot to save recently. It's pretty transparent which areas will have big fights, so save before that. Also, the X button skips through conversations.

Technical issues are the only real criticism that can be pointed at this game and they're easily overlooked, because they don't hurt the gameplay, just the visual effect.

Maybe all those problems you have with the game will disappear on PC, though.

I'd hate to have someone pass over the best written game of the year because someone said it had "horrible" combat without justifying that statement, because you know how easy it is for people to read a negative statement and ignore any positive ones. They're just more interesing.

Its been awhile since I've had that feeling while playing a game. Good feeling.

Any news on a PC version? Are they working on one?

They better be working on a PC version.

Played and beat K&L last night, and I am fairly disappointed with it. I expected so much more and what I got was a let down to me. Graphics were barely acceptable for a next gen game, game play felt really sloppy as well as the controls, story was eh okay I guess, sound was crappy, no replay value besides co-op/ online but I don't care enough about the game to give that a shot. Plus the ending('s) were just horrible. I'd probably give it a 6.5 just because Lynch entertained me quite a bit. A rental for sure, or to pick it up when it's $20 or less.

That's how the combat looked from all the gameplay videos I watched, and Gametrailers mentioned the loading/framerate issues in their review. All that together made me not really want it at release. I can wait until it's like...$20.

I didn't know about unskippable cutscenes. I can't think of any game I played recently where you can't skip a cutscene. Kinda lame.

Hit the nail on the head. I don't see how the combat could be even close to horrible. It definitely can be challenging at the beginning, but once you level up a little and figure out how to play it's a blast.

Not to mention the flexibility. I leveled up barrier, all my defense skills, and my shotgun skill. My character was a walking tank. I'd just barrel through enemies blasting them in the face. Yet some people play as snipers, and yet others play as pure biotics.

But, you can skip the cutscenes...

Im not gonna give up on it, and how do you skip the cutscenes? There are a couple that I have not been able to at all.

Im gonna try again tonight, and try to look past most of these things.

There are some you can't skip. I've noticed, whenever Shepard is talking you can most likely skip most of it.

My question, why the fuck would you want too? Unless you die and you want to skip it.

Anyways, press X to skip.
