If motion control became the standard...

With the introduction of Natal, a PS3-mote, and an updated Wii-motion technology it's safe to assume companies are pushing for a standardized motion control system, completely making modern push button controllers obsolete.

If motion control became the standard for console gaming what would you do?

I'd be done with gaming. I don't play much these days as is, and I hated the motion controls when I briefly had a Wii.

Gaming's only real purpose for me is to veg out for a while, and if I have to move around that just doesn't work and I'd rather just watch a movie or something on TV.

As long as it's not for every game I think I'll be fine. I don't play every game anyway. I don't want to motion control every game though. I play games to relax, I lift weights if I want to move. Some times I just want to lie down on my bed and game. If it becomes standard, I'd probably just move to the PC.

I think the two can and will coexist for quite some time. If motion controls continue to be as popular as the Wii is, however, it would be extremely difficult to convince developers to develop games using the traditional style of gameplay. PS3/360 are getting insanely expensive to develop and taking a long time to release. Meanwhile, Wii has released relatively cheaper, and quick to develop games that sometimes sell boatloads more than PS3/360 games. If this trend continues, developers have little reason to spend years and millions developing games that a smaller portion of the gaming market will buy.

I voted that I will just game on older consoles. I don't mind motion control at all. My only problem with it, up until this past E3, was that it seemed extremely limited as to what I could do with it. I felt like a PS3/360 controller was far more practical for my gaming needs. I will admit I am intrigued by the Wiimote Plus, Sony's motion controller, and NATAL though. If they are able to replicate the experience I get now (which, at the moment, I kind of doubt), then I wouldn't mind switching to motion controls. If not, there are thousands of games out there right now that I could go through for the remainder of my gaming life.

I agree with this.

I figured I'd present this "what if" scenario to see what gamers thought IF motion control became standard permanently.

You can only play a handful of genres on say the Natal, and as we've seen, a lot of genres are disasters on a motion sensing controller (wii and fighting games for instance). So it will never fully replace the controller, but could definitely have its place for certain titles.

I like motion controls, but only as a secondary controller. For the primary I rather use the standard (hands) controller.

id probably give up gaming. i dont mind motion controlls as a choice or an option but if it becomes a mandatory way to play games thats it. i like and prefer to use controllers i dont want to have to do all that extra bullshit to play a game especially when it really isnt adding to the game on any level ( like with wii gmes).

I don't think I'm going to like how it is done on the 360 or the PS3. On the Wii what few games I have and what few I have played don't seem to really make you "flail" your arms around. Out of the games I have and have played the ones that make you move the most are the ones on Wii Sports. So for me the motion controller seems to act more as I guess a 3d mouse. As for the question it all depends. If it is done like on the few Wii games I have played then I would still play them as long as I don'thave to do a lot of movement. However if it is to the point that to just play a game I'm in my living room moving around like some jackass then i'm done. I will just start picking up games for older systems and play them. I don't want to put much if any at all physical work into a game.

I would continue playing my games on the best console, the PC, either without motion control, or with a far superior version of motion control, as it is a PC and everything is better about it.
Probably would be a combo of PC and Older systems for me.
Same here (including emulators).

Move to PC Gaming, which I've already started to do. Motion control is fine on some games, but I wouldn't like it on all games.

Sorry, but this is just a stupid question. Motion control doesn't need to "become the standard". It can coexist with traditional control games. Motion controls, when done right, are great for games designed for them. When they are slapped onto a game really designed for traditional controls, they tend to suck. So... Tiger Woods 10 with MotionPlus is fantastic, for example. Excitebots Trick Racing is fantastic too and it doesn't use MotionPlus, but the standard Wii remote - Excitebots was built from the ground up for motion control and the controls work great and are a lot of fun.

Cheapy, friends and sheep continue to be unable to understand that motion controls can make for some great games that can only be done with motion controls, and that this isn't an affront to traditional gaming, but an expansion upon it. That's their problem.

I would save a lot of money.

Motion controls are fine when done intuitively, but they are easy to mess up.

Most developers have enough problems utilizing pads with two-sticks, a d-pad, and 8+ buttons.

No motion-controlled game has ever impressed me. I do not think I am in the minority, despite the popularity of the Wii. I don't think there will ever be a time when motion-controls dominate the video game market.

I'm hoping MS release some wireless controllers you can hold in both hands that have buttons for input as well as force feedback so you can use motion/movement & button controll... maybe like a nunchuck in both hands... :) Best of both worlds!

I could see something like the "human breakout" game being a great fitness type game.

I don't think motion control can become "standard" unless there is an accompanying leap in "virtual reality" technology.

That just remains to be seen. Motion controls could eventually become the norm.

And even if they don't, if the motion control games sell the best, we'll see more of them and consequently fewer traditional games with traditional controls.

Take a look at Mario Galaxy. It probably works just fine without the motion control, but they added in anyway.

Mix of PC and older consoles. PC would probably end up getting all the games that are controlled with a pad anyway if this were the case.

I would posit that it would have been better without motion controls.

Tell me if I am wrong here but aren't the only motion control games that sell really well first party Nintendo titles? The titles are either bundled with a "fun" new accessory (Wii Fit) or are based on Mario - which would sell well regardless of motion control.

Microsoft and Sony may be looking at grabbing a chunk of this market but it really depends on what the developers are going to be doing with this. I don't know the details but I don't think motion control games generally sell more than "standard control". Comparing third party titles will show this. There are a lot of developers out there. It is just that Nintendo has been very good at pushing accessories and Wii consoles.

I hope controllers don't go away anytime soon. I would end up with a concussion every time I play Ninja Gaiden!

EDIT: I would go back to old consoles. Even now I still play Super Nintendo occasionally.

?? it is the standard now. it's no longer a question of "what if" any more as the three have showed interest in motion controls. if your still thinking of "what if", then you're living in the past and the future is now, so get with the program.

i look at the ea sports game coming out this year with motion plus and i find it a waste for ea to release them for the 360/ps3 without motion control as the gameplay on the wii is far superior due to the motion controller as compared to using a control pad on the 360/ps3.

btw, dual analog control setup will exist, but they're just going to suck.

I'd finally get to play all those awesome games that I either didn't have time for the first time around or those that I want to play again. I appreciate the technology of Natal, but I want my controller.

Speak for yourself.

I find that it means there are two versions of the games worth playing.

As for keeping with the times/future etc. fuck that. Games lose traditional controls and I'll just give up the hobby. I don't game that much these days anyway as other hobbies have just slowly risen above gaming for me over the past decade or so.

I can't tell if you're the master of sarcasm or a dummy.

I'd probably go with a combination of both older and newer. When I want to go motion I will with a handful of games that appeal to me, but more often than not ill stick with a controller. It all depends how they can implement Natal in future games.

As far as examples of games that really are good with motion controls, obviously there is Wii Sports. Poo-poo it all you want, but the bowling is really fun and most people find a few others in the set that they really like. After playing Wii Sports, a bowling game where you press a button a bunch of times or roll a trackball or flick an analog stick isn't even remotely as fun.

Excitebots is awesome and wouldn't be the same at all with an analog stick. How about Boom Blox? I'm sure there are others (I don't have that many games yet). Now with Wii MotionPlus we've got Tiger Woods 10, which I do have, and it is *fantastic* and is way better then traditional controls golf games. It's looking like their tennis game isn't so successful, though, maybe not successful at all. Perhaps they'll get tennis right for '11? Mind you, I have not played GST myself. A good motion controlled tennis game will be awesome... once we get it.

I'm also looking forward to a good Wii MotionPlus baseball game - batting with Wii MotionPlus will rock. Swing the fucking bat for cripes sake! What's not to like? Only if the particularly implementation of the motion controls sucked, which is always possible, would it suck, but given Tiger Woods 10, I don't think there's any reason to believe that we won't get some good ones eventually. Hopefully soon.

A key thing to note is that while some developers seem unable to imagine a Wii game without motion controls and thus wrongly develop their games only with motion controls or use them in odd ways, there's others that do get it. Take Lego Star Wars Complete Saga. It does offer motion control as a (fairly useless) option to swing your light saber, but really you can, and should, play the game with remote and nunchuck, not using motion control, and it plays just as great as on any other system. My point here is that the developers understood that motion controls would not add anything to the game other then as something to try once or twice, and they kept it designed as a traditional controls game - Wii motion controls did not kill the radio star. There is no reason to get your panties in a bunch, folks.

I recognize a hypothetical question when I see it, but I also recognize a dumb one when I see it. This hypothetical question is dumb and completely pointless. Here's another one:

If from now on the only type of video game produced were to be ice hockey games, would you:

1. rejoice and admire your hockey stick collection
2. game on PC
3. just game on older systems
4. shove ice picks into your eyes

I don't think it a dumb hypothetical. I think it's entirely possible motion controls could eventually pretty much replace analog controls just like analog nearly wiped out digital controls.

Especially in the future if we get into Star Trek-esque virtual reality games etc.

So I think it's a fair point to see what people would do if we got to having all, or mostly, motion controlled games.

You know what game was BETTER off without motion controls? Super Paper Mario. Goddamn having to do platforming and randomly pointing at the TV to find hidden items and paths got annoying as hell. So better off with old consoles.

If, in some sick, twisted alternate reality, motion controls became the sole standard, I would either quit gaming or become a PC gamer.

Cry myself to sleep.

It works for some things (Sports, Platforming and Mario Kart) but in the majority it fails (RPG Waggle, Fighting Games, FPS and Third Person shooters *usually*) it should be balanced, tho it would be interesting to see a Halo go total motion control for a true test of sales.

If they can actually make the controls intuitive and nearly perfect, rather than limiting and unresponsive (Wii,) I'd probably happy use them.

That isn't motion control, though. It's a pointer via the infrared sensor bar. No motion sensing involved.

Wii doesn't by definition have unresponsive motion controls. See Excitebots, for example, which makes extensive use of motion control and it works great. I.e. it depends on the game/developer. Hopefully MotionPlus will make it easier for 3rd party developers to produce quality games now. There are good 3rd party games, but there are plenty that aren't good. In the end, though, it won't help a developer that never set out to produce a quality title in the first place. Such a developer's game would have sucked had it been controlled via an analog stick too.
