Give up on FFVII sherlock?
Not really? I've been in a gaming slump as of late so I decided to start back this weekend. I went back to Borderlands 1 with a different character and start Skyrim for the first time. I probably go back to FFVII later.
Ah, I usually can only handle one RPG at a time.
I'm like that too but I wanted to try Skyrim for a while now to see what all the hype was about.

I'm about an hour or so in to Growlanser Wayfarer of Time. Been way more talking the battles and I haven't even gotten any cusotmization/spells yet. All my characters can do is just the generic attack command.

RPGs really need to have a faster paced beginning, or at least introduce more of the character options if you want to hold peoples attention.

Started two JRPGs recent-ish-ly:

Opoona is quite a bit more life-simmy than I expected. Basically I'm a spaceman marooned on a planet with a very strict social system structured around jobs and licenses. Not necessarily Final Fantasy-type jobs either-- one of those that I recently completed involved serving fast food at a restaurant. There's a lot of running around and talking to people involved, and battle system is rather unique and interesting. It's slowly paced, so I'm going to take my time with it.

As for Etrian Odyssey IV... well, I heard it's easier than the others, but I did not expect it to be this easy. However, FOEs are still genuinely threatening, the vehicle exploration element is much better than the one in III, and it's still fun. Difficulty aside, it also maintains the series tradition of containing lots of little improvements with each new installment. This has quickly become the main game I'm currently focusing on.
I don't even know what that means.
Inexplicable hot springs bathing scenes and overly-complex cooking systems.

You should seek a way past your xenophobia to play those immenensly enjoyable games.

Wait, so you never played Persona? Cuz those games are Japanese up the fuckin ass.
Rumored Tales of Symphonia HD Collection.

http://www.siliconera.com/2013/05/1...a-and-its-sequel-to-see-hd-re-release-on-ps3/

Most likely won't be released in the States.

I most likely won't care.
Nice. I beat Symphonia but never did any of the sidequest stuff. Not so hyped about the Wii sequel since I have heard bad things......

And Xilia 2 is rumored to be coming west after all.

End of console generations have historically been a good time for JRPG releases.
Inexplicable hot springs bathing scenes and overly-complex cooking systems.
I'll give you the first one, but the cooking system is beyond simple. In Graces you craft them like anything else in the game and the others I think you just find recipes from the mysterious chef dude.

I put down P3 because I learned that after 20 hours devoted I was only a 1/4th of the way finished. Tartarus was already pretty repetitive at that point, and my classmate relationships never extended beyond the usual anime bullshit. So yeah, too japanese.
Honestly, any cooking system that isn't Suikoden 2's can fuck right off. Just put the sugar on the tempura and let's fucking go.
Should I even play Suikoden 2?

You should give P4 a shot.

It's totally the same exact game but better.

I haven't played any Suikoden game.

I think the first one is a classic and I have that on PSN.

I also have never played Grandia. Don't people like that a lot too?

Oh, probably.

Suikoden 1 holds up pretty well, but 2 is the fucking crown jewel. You don't need to play 1 first, though its plot does come up a little bit in the second. This is your homework while I'm away, okay?

But I'm playing all the Tales games right now.

I'm 6 hours into Destiny. About 30 minutes into Eternia. I have Phantasia ready to go. Legendia is sealed. Vesperia has been sealed since I bought it four years ago.

Also, I'm still playing Graces and then Xillia is coming out soon.

So yeah, maybe I'll have time.

i started playing this game called kamidori alchemy master

someone described it as a game like the atelier series because of the crafting.
but with sex.

which made me think... why haven't i played the atelier series yet? where's a good game to jump into with that?
which made me think... why haven't i played the atelier series yet? where's a good game to jump into with that?
Depends on which one you're looking to start.

With the PS3 it goes like this:

Arland Story: Atelier Rorona -> Atelier Totori -> Atelier Meruru

Dusk?? Story: Atelier Ayesha

Rorona is somewhat slow/dull in terms of feel of the gameplay. Totori it picks up a bit and isn't bad. Meruru is a small step up. Ayesha is pretty good gameplay wise and is stand-alone. They don't really need to be played in any particular order, but characters from the earlier ones in the Arland series show up in the later ones. They are all pretty relaxing games for me to play as the time constraints aren't that bad and I don't particularly mind going through the game twice as NG+ allows you to carry over equipment that is currently equipped in the final save.

If you're talking about the PS2 ones, they can be played in any order really. They're very different than the PS3 releases and a lot more action-y in terms of the battle system. I somewhat enjoyed 1 and 2 but disliked 3 because of the whole guild/job system. These fuckers love the shit out of some barrels too.

i'm looking at the ps3 ones, mainly because my ps2 is busted.

i've heard good stuff for totori over meruru... but can't really confirm. i'll probably just play one of them so i gotta make it count, lol.

but first i gotta finish this alchemy master game. it's quite grindy... fantastic game but the story is kinda crappy, the character and character design is atypical anime (and your buddies are the loli, the tsundere, and the friendly motherly figure). still, the strategy mechanics are great.
Which one are you going to fuck?
tsundere, her art is the best, but that isn't saying much.

also no loli prease.

Yay. I've discovered someone with the same opinion of P3 as me.

As for the Tales HD port... hmm. I think I'll pass (assuming it gets an English release in the first place.) I'd 100% buy it, though, if they'd put the PS1 version of Tales of Phantasia (or SNES, I'm not picky) on it, too. That game was awesome, and before Namco and other companies got stuck on generic anime graphics. Ahh, the good old days.

Symphonia could be great in "true" HD, not just clean up the jaggies (though that would certainly help, it hasn't aged all that well imho). Symphonia 2... fuck off. Started it, thought "this is better than everyone was saying" and it just... never went anywhere. At all.

Now give me my fucking Tales of Rebirth gods dammit!

That was basically me when I first played it. I did give it a shot after 3 years of not even touching it,and glad I did since it got much better. Biggest problem was that their was really no plot for the first 20 hours,it was just wait for the next full moon for something interesting to happen.

Huh. I remember back when you started it, and was like, "this isn't so bad."

Maybe I should get it out of the way sooner rather than later...

I've never finished any Tales games. Never got a past a few hours with any of them.

Played the Atelier (uh 1. maybe 3?) and Mana Khameia games on :ps2: haven't touched any of the ones on :ps3: . I liked the crafting aspect.

Persona 3 bored me. Too many roadblocks (You're too tired to fight), waiting for the full moon, dialogue choices, etc.
I just finished Persona 2: Innocent Sin and loved that. Put nearly 60 hours into it.

RPGs seem for handhelds these days.

What does that even mean?

I think I only ever made it a couple hours into that one. Gonna get to it when I finish Destiny.

9 hours in and I just got done attacking pirate ships or something I don't know.

Haha yeah, it started off decently enough. But the plot never really took off much (even after the big "twist"), the monster recruiting seemed way too luck based so I was using the exact same team for most of what I played, and eventually the enemies just became damage sponges. Not difficult, just tedious. Youtubed the last ~1/3 of the game, and determined I didn't really miss anything lol.

Funny-but-true post of the day.

Etrian Odyssey IV has its hooks in me but good. It's pretty much the game I needed right now.

"Tedious" doesn't sound very good for me at the moment, but maybe later. At least it's short for a Tales game, from the sounds of it.

Wow I never remembered having trouble with FF9 before. Only a few hours in and I honestly can't press forward. Going to have to reload an older save and grind.

Is it because I changed the system to 'Active'? Can't see how that would make such a big difference. Enemies can 2 shot all my characters...

Only always play on active.

Someone in this thread was having trouble cuz they were going up to fight the dragons from the Grotto when you're not supposed to do that. Maybe you wandered into the wrong area or something.

Maybe I'm supposed to go somewhere else on the worldmap first? Just weird because they said I need to head to Burmecia, and everything there is out of my league.

Yeah, if you're heading to Burmecia, than you're going through the Grotto. The only enemies that I remember being troublesome were the dragons you can run into from an exit in the Grotto.

I think you can pick up Quina for the first time too. Did you do that? Maybe it's harder cuz you don't have a full party?

Only place in 9 I remember struggling with was when a later dungeon (in pyramids or something like that? It's been a while) where the team was forceably split in 2 and one team was severely underleveled. fuck you Eiko...
Eiko is awesome.

It's your fault if she was underleveled.
She rocks and so does Amarant Coral. I really wanted Steiner & Vivi in my final dungeon team, but they didn't make the cut.

Vivi is awesome, no doubt, but for my party Garnet and Eiko provided the magic AND healing.

What don't you like about Amarant? He's like the most balanced character in the game. Chakra + Power Up to restore HP & MP , Aura for auto life and regen, both can be cast on anyone and during his limit he can cast on the party, wat? Countdown and Curse were, I thought, surprisingly effectve and Throw could deal some big damage.

I also liked how he didn't get along with Eiko at first lol.

Alright well I'm past that super odd segment. Now 8 hours in, battles feel a bit clunky but otherwise I'm digging it.

They really dropped the ball with this Trance thing, though. So dumb.

Trance and Eiko were the only things about the game I actually hated.

Gonna get one of the three Final Fantasy games I have not played (IV, V, VI) this week. Which one should I get? Or maybe I can just play FFX again.
