IGN reviews GTA 4. My God.

Wouldn't have stopped me from getting it even with a review of 7, but damn 10. IGN isn't too bad with giving out their high scores. Jade Empire aside
Those explosions made me cream my pants. When he was shooting the car in front of him and then ran the car over while it was exploding, my oh my! I literally shouted "GAME OVER!" like 8 times.
Okay.....settle down there, buddy.
IGN usually does over hype and overrate many games. Remember Jade Empire's 9.9 score? However, I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this one...
Yeah... IGN over-hypes like no other.

But still, unlike Jade Empire, I honestly doubt this game doesn't deserve at least an 9.9.
Correct me if I am wrong, but with IGN's new rating style, it doesn't have to be. IIRC, they use ".5" intervals now, meaning that this game could be a 9.75 in reality.
That's GameSpot, IGN still uses the .1 scale intervals.
Okay, maybe "dozens" was an exaggeration of their claims, but they insist that it's pretty fucking huge. And yeah, no duh they aren't part of the "main story" of the regular game; they're supposedly entirely new episodic story branches (apparently in new locales), not just extra missions for the main story.

Remember, Microsoft paid 50 mil (which is several times the budget of your average top-tier current-gen game) to keep these things exclusive. They must be pretty damned substantial to justify such an investment

Sounds like ten hours of extra added on missions.
I've yet to beat a GTA game even after sinking over a hundred hours into any given one.

But if it's worth it to you, go for it.

Well, what exactly were you expecting the content to be? Horse armor, or something?

What's your point, anyways? That the DLC isn't going to add any value to the 360 version? If so, then go ahead, keep kidding yourself.

Looking forward to getting this next week.I was going to wait to see if I could find it cheaper but, The review sealed the deal for me.
He's not your guy, fwieeend
HE'S NOT YOUR FWIEEEND, BUDDY!!!!!111

I'm glad it's finally the weekend, but damn. Tuesday cannot come soon enough.

I'm glad the review talked about 360/PS3 performance differences, because figuring out which version to get is driving me nuts. Maybe it's a good idea to rent both versions and check them out myself.

Somehow the hype has backfired for me. The more I hear about how great this game is, the less I want to play it. I'd probably just get to the point of unlocking all the terrain and then screw around for a while and then shelve it.

I hope you guys enjoy it, though. It sounds like for fans of the series / genre it's fantastic.

You better get it, I wanna free roam with chew.

Call me skeptical but I have a really hard time believing it's the best game since OoT, "without question".

Sounds like WAY too much hyping.

I'm jus' sayin...

I could give two craps about GTA games, but this one seems really fun. I hated the other three on the PS2, I will have to give this one a try.

Also, Jade Empire sucked my ass. Combat system sucked so much, I don't even want to think about it.

The fact that these guys hold Pokemon and Zelda as the gold standards of video gaming prove that they blow at rating games.

Any site that uses decimal points like that is full of it. A 10 point scale is fine without decimals, but to act like rating is a somewhat exact science? Come on.

I'm glad I'm getting the PS3 version. I'm a single player, and I'll take the reduced load times, and improved graphics.

Uh what? I think its universally accepted that Zelda OOT is one of the finest games ever made...

Also, I like the decimal system, as it allows for more exact precision. I find that sites that use whole point values are retarded. Especially those who operate on the "5 scale." The difference from 4/5 and 5/5 is 80 and 100. That is way too large of a gray area.

I have no problem getting the 360 version. Besides the fact I don't own a PS3 yet. And I'm probably ignore the multiplayer unless I have some friends trying it out.
I can't wait for GameSpot's 3.5 score. ;)
That would've only happened if the old staff were there.

I'll be getting the PS3 version as well.

As for IGN, I couldn't read past the first page. What a wankfest.

Ocarina of Time was tons of fun, and I didn't normally like Legend of Zelda games up until that game came out.

And Help, look out, GamePro's sending their GoonPro squad to your door. ;)
Strangely enough, the original Dreamcast version of Soul Calibur was also awarded a 10.
Not strange at all.

IGN is the first credible American site allowed to post a review, and it's a 10. Big surprise.

Yes, I am being a skeptic for skeptic's sake. But come on, that review was filled with so much sap and hyperbole. The way Hilary Goldstein writes, you would think the game caused him to have some sort of religious awakening or something.

You can be sure that's not a coincidence.
I don't know why you're so cynical, it's not like IGN has ever been involved in a review scandal before. Oh, wait, never mind.
I guess it also had something to do about the Okami Wii port's cover with the IGN watermark eh?

Conspiracy I tells ya!

I don't think that Nintendo thing is a scandal.

I'm not implying that IGN gave GTA an undeserving 10. However, it seems fairly obvious that IGN called up Rockstar and said something to the effect of, "Can we break embargo if we score GTA a 10?" It's been documented previously that this is how the industry works.

More importantly, i hope Play Asia gets their shipment in a timely matter, and I'm playin' this bitch ASAP.

I wouldn't doubt it for a second.

QFT.

Any time I hear the phrase "Oscar-worthy" tied to a video game storyline I tend to throw the entire damn article and it's credibility out the window.

This is going to make for some interesting GOTY awards. IGN set a precedent, how can any other game (at least to IGN) have a chance?

Either way this game is going to be awesome, but I think you guys are right, whenever a game gets a perfect 10, that is cause to raise eye brows. But does it really matter? Is there really a difference if the game gets a 10 on IGN and you think it's a 9.8 or 9.9?

PS. Hilary is a douche bag.

EDIT: Anyone dissing on Pokemon Red/Blue is heading towards a smack bottom. Those games were ridiculously awesome for their time and were a great spin on the turn based RPG era. Hell, ten years later the gameplay still holds up really well.
They gave Pokemon Red/Blue a 10.0 also...

Game looks good though.
Other than the fact that there's a different scale for handheld games, Pokemon Red/Blue > GTA IV.
They gave Pokemon Red/Blue a 10.0 also...
Are you saying that they didn't deserve it? Their monster/battle system was revolutionary at the time, and there's a reason why those two titles spawned the massive multimedia empire that's still running today.

Now, as for GTAIV...we'll see. I'm reserving judgment until I play it, which is going to be a minimum of a few months due to not being able to afford a 360 or PS3 at the moment.

No it wasn't...

The game's interface was the clumsiest in the history of gaming and still is.

Anyway that's off topic, everyone has their own opinion.

Also, the term gaming journalism is stupid, these guys do a job any idiot could do and their credibility is no less questionable than your local EB/Gamestop drone.

Pokemon Red/Blue was in it's own league when it was released. It was revolutionary. And clumsy interface? Click attack to choose an attack. Click pokemon to choose a pokemon, click run to run, click item to get your items. That is a nice simple interface. Plus you can set an item to a button like to a bike or a fishing rod so you can just press select? to get it out.

5 lines of dialogue for each turn.

5 lines of dialogue plus a game save just to organize pokemon.

Unsortable items/pokemon lists.

The idea was amazing, the implementation was not a 10.

Like I said, this is a matter of opinion, I happen to think Pokemon was fun at the time, but is boring and unforgivably clumsy now.

Stop fucking talking about the handheld reviews. They've already said that they had different standards and to not compare them to the console scores. I'll go find the article/podcast where they said that.

And I never said it wasn't of any value.
In fact, I've stated the opposite.
