I'm bored, let's talk fighters 15th Anniversary Collection!

It's absolutely always humid in Chicago and it sucks... because you go outside to get the mail or something and you feel like shit by the time you get back to the house. It's awful.

As for pads vs. sticks... as would seem obvious, I prefer pads because that's all I know how to use right now. Really getting sick of having to use the L trigger for stuff... and qcb's on the PS2 pad are annoying.
So I've been playing a shitload of fighting games recently and I figured that it might be time to ditch the d-pad and start using an arcade stick. Unfortunately, I've never known how to use an arcade stick well in the arcades and I don't know anything about home arcade sticks so I do need some help deciding on what to get. So are there any relatively cheap sticks that are recommendable? I need it to work with the PS2, but it would also be nice to have it work with the Dreamcast and Xbox since I still have fighters on those systems as well. Also, what's a "Japanese style stick?"

Markman, this question is aimed somewhat directly at you.
you could easily get a PS2 to Gamecube/Xbox converter. I got one and I can easily use a ps controller on gamecube and xbox.

I think the best stick would be to get the SF or Tekken stick and mod with arcade parts, might be a little too much work.

I usually prefer my Saturn controller pad for fighters. But I do use sticks to. I just got so used to pads back in the day when I did not have arcade sticks at home it became easier for me to use.
Has anyone seen the KOF anime/promo Another Day? Are there any others like it?
I loved the Another Day minis that they had since they hit the mood of my liking pretty well... basicly very dark and serious...

As for pads vs. sticks I am currently stuck with pad, or have been for over 10 years already, but I know if I had a stick that I would be more comfortable with a stick. Every time I play on pad, it's feels normal to me, but on stick I feel like I don't know what I'm doing while feeling more natural... weird eh?

D-Pad Vs. Arcade Sticks?

I've gotten so used to default pads/controllers on consoles. I haven't owned an arcade stick since the SNES days, which I bought specifically for SF II. I do prefer arcade sticks though. When I'm able to find an arcade that has a fighting game I like, I feel much more comfortable with that setup. I also play a little different on consoles than I do in arcades. In Capcom fighters on consoles, I tend not to use MP/MK because of the layout of the controller. But in arcades, since the layout is there, I use all the buttons.

I recently got the Street Fighter Anniversary stick on the cheap, so hopefully I'm able to mod it correctly. I've never done a joystick mod before, but if I can get great buttons/joystick to go with that great artwork I'll be happy :)

finding your stick is all about preference really... and once you do find something that feels nice, stick with it.

japanese style sticks are the ones with the balltop, whereas american sticks look like baseball bats.

i personally prefer j-style sticks, since i really like how loose they are, but that's just me. i've had a friend who couldn't adjust until he started using an unmodded SFAC stick, which i thought was really really stiff and i couldn't get used to it at all.

the t5 stick imo is one of the best values for joysticks if you like the japanese style. a bit more upscale are the hori real arcade pro joysticks. the main difference is the quality of the joystick and the button position.

as for as american sticks, SFAC seems to be the only cheap option. i suppose you can mod it but for people who aren't experienced it's pretty scary. i don't know if MAS is still around, they used to make good (but pricey) sticks.

lastly, shoryuken.com's forums have some great stick makers. check the trading outlet section and hunt for sticks you want. i know some guys who've gotten sticks from finkle and they seem pretty solid... plus they put your name on it and the artwork you want so you can impress all your geeky friends =P

i just can't play fighting games on pads anymore. it feels so weird especially if it uses a 6 button layout... that's really the main reason i switched to sticks. even saturn-type pads, i can't get used to. =P

Pad vs Stick comes down to pure preference. It's really tough to decide especially if you're so used to something. If you want to start playing on stick, you gotta dedicate yourself to it and get used to it.

As far as sticks go, get a PS2 one, they have good convertors for both DC and Xbox, so that's the way to go.

The next order of business on deciding is whether you will go Japanese or American. Japanese style is like the Agetec DC stick aka Green Goblin, or the Tekken 5 Hori stick that came out here. American being the Street Fighter Anniversary stick from Nubytech. (Which IMO needs to be modded with real arcade parts)

American sticks are more circular in range of motion and have a wider throw/pull on the stick. Japanese sticks are usually by default, square gated and have a more restricted range of motion but require less input to be able to perform certain moves.

Buttons are buttons, but I'll say this, Japanese buttons feel much more comfortable. Sanwa buttons(not available on any retail stick except for the Hori Real Arcade Pro SA) are so comfortable and you don't even have to press on them hard for an input to register. Hori buttons are good too, but compared to the Sanwa buttons, they're nasty. American buttons are usually concave or convex. The better being the ones without the 'dimples' as they can actually hurt your fingers easier when you're trying to 'mash' out of certain moves etc.

That's all for now, I just woke up.

Back to finishing the Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection combo vid.

Btw, Tekken Zaibatsu is going to start the ghost system really soon, and it's going to feature some really cool listing options, be sure to check it out.

Wow. That's a lotta helpful information. I'm thinking that I'll try to find the Tekken stick somewhere (any suggestions?) since it seems relatively inexpensive and like it'd be a good basic stick. When I get used to the stick and get better I'll move up to something custom made though.
anyone know how easy it is to mod the Street Fighter Anniversary stick?

http://arcadestickmonk.com/SFACmod.html

I was reading through that mod there, and it seems very difficult for someone like myself, who have no experience at all doing stuff like that :)
Wondering the same thing. I have the money, and am on the fence with this one. I hate the buttons/joystick on my SFAC stick, but I'm afraid I might fuck it up if I try to mod it...

Yeah but if you hate it to where it's unplayable, then why not try and mod it? If you fuck it up, you'll still have a nice collection piece.

as stupid as it sounds, I emailed a couple local electricians to see if they could do something small like this. :) even sent them the link to that SFA mod site.

a buddy of mine I worked with offered to pay for half the cost of my buttons/joystick order today, so I thought why not.

Just got my 360 today, and DoA 4... I'll get Xbox Live hooked up right soon (need to grab a hub) so I'll let you fighters know when I do, we can get together and play.

Damn you! jk

i guess I'll be the most "scrubby" out of everyone on this thread when I get my hands on DoA4... I gotta wait at least another week or so before I'll have my 360.

I'll take the "scrubby" title... I'm terrible at DOA 4. 2D fighters are more my thing, but of course those aren't online. I like talking trash, but I can't exactly back it up... oh well, should be interesting having new competition.

not true, as that honor goes to me. I've yet to even touch a DOA game.

I feel like such a newbie now.
We'll have to play DOA 4 tomorrow if you have a chance. Apossum apparently is too scared to fight me so I need a new CAG to fight.
that's it *gloveslap* I demand satisfaction!

I am on at weird times and only stay on for a half hour at a time these days. stupid school and life getting in the way. like a broken record, hopefully I'll be around this week.

on a side note, not only do I recommend white PSPs, but I encourage you all to sell your black ones and pay the difference for a white one if you want to seriously play fighters on the psp. you won't get *perfect* tournament worthy results, but close to it.

I'm guessing you're talking about the d-pad... am I right?

I hate the buttons/joystick, but I still enjoy using the 'cade stick millions of times more than the xbox/ps2 pads.
Holy shit! The d-pad on the white PSP is a huuuuge improvement! I can finally do special moves and combos in Darkstalkers! it's more like the PS2 pad, but still a bit awkward.

it isn't compatible, since the slide card is used to pull out the tray and the slim is a flip top.

you can do this-- open the slim ps2, put a piece of thick foam tape on the button right above the power button, then put a piece on the other button near the back-right hinge of the lid.

that may sound vague, but you'll see what I mean when you open it. those are two sensors which make sure the lid is closed before loading a disc. If you want to keep your warranty sticker, hold a blow dryer on it for a couple minutes (loosens the glue), then slowly peel it off and put it somewhere safe (if you stick it to something else, blow dry it again before you take it off!)

let me know if you have any questions about that...
Thanks. I was tempted to try this but knowing my luck, I'd probably end up frying the whole system. Still, it's defintely gonna be something I'll attempt if my other option doesn't turn out well.

Chacrana: Thanks for the info on the slide card and it's impact on the system, I found something similar that is compatible with a slim ps2. A cheap import from play-asia will have to confirm if everything can work properly.

Everyone that gets PSP and Tekken: Dark Resurrection, make sure you sign up at www.tekkenzaibatsu.com ! The ghost download library is currently going through beta testing and it is awesome stuff.

It should be open by the time the US version is out.

yeah I posted castel's development screenshots here as a reminder... I'm already set to go. All I need next is my actual ghost data.

One question... is the ghost CPU any good at registering mix-ups for combos? a regular of mine (and this will give away one of my crappy strategys) is with Kazuya: I do a few 1, 2, 4 and then throw out occasionally 1, 2, df+2

1. who's your favorite street fighter 2 character and why?

2. what's your favorite strategy to use with said character?

3. what's your preference when it comes to controllers?

1.Gotta go with 3rd strike and Ryu/Akuma if I dont wanna lose ever...lol, for humilation i'll do E.Honda or Hugo depending on which SF it is

2.Jump in med kick, jab, strong punch fireball or jump in med kick, jab, jab, lightning special move dragon punch w/ ryu (combo takes over half to 3 quaters of your opponents energy)

3.Arcade...miss playing SF:3rd strike....best in the series. I really like SF:anniversery.

PS- I have 2 SF:anniversery arcade sticks for trade or sale if anyone is interested,,,never used, perfect condition boxes and all. Pm if interested

damn it! >_< I guess I'll eventually sell my model and pick up a white, even though I can't stand having a white version... (mainly to distinclty seperate my sony stuff from my nintendo stuff).

I'm a little annoyed because I just got my PSP like half a year ago... maybe a few more good fighting games would convince me to ditch this black one but right now... can't make myself pull the trigger.

on the other hand, I don't see why they wouldn't fix the buttons on U.S. PSPs, so maybe impulse buying the white one wouldn't be the best idea.

1. Sagat. He is just really awesome. First time I watched my cousins beat SF2:WW for the SNES and they got to sagat, I thought he was awesome. His appearance, the way he says 'Tiger', etc, are awesome. Though I really hate his alpha sprite, and his new voices suck too...He looked pretty awesome in SVC Chaos though.

2. Using his long limbs as pokes - lots of crouching MK/HK's, throw lots of tiger shots to put on the pressure, and when you can, the two hit standing HK. Use tiger uppercut as both an anti air and a close range punshing option (it's not SF2, but my GOD in SFA1 is tiger uppercut overpowered!), etc etc.

3. Arcade stick, followed by Xbox/Saturn/SF Controller D-Pad. Hate the PS2 D-pad - can't do Half Circles, Double QC's, let alone 360's on it.

Just got my KoF 94 Rebout today from Play Asia... don't know when I'll get around to rigging my PS2 to play it though, I'm probably hooking up Live tonight and I don't feel like messing around with the PS2 (yet).

The ghost registering mixups is kinda iffy, sometimes it will, but then sometimes it'll do a move that you NEVER used in your life. Pretty weird stuff.

Been helpin Castel with some of the testing this morning, we just added all the ranks etc. The Ghost Project is going to have a lot of cool stuff. I'm pretty sure it'll be open soon, we just need some region confirmation.

Jeese... I've never played as Karin before but I might try it now... come to think of it, I already forgot about Alpha Anthology. Nice surprise to remember that I have it.

Well, I finally changed my avatar after not liking it for about a year

I kept the same character just so people would still somewhat recognize me... even though Bryan still isn't my main (though he use to be).

Once you get it going, let us now how it is :)

Is that Play-Asia sale going until the end of August? I was thinking about getting Rebout for my PS2, since it was so cheap.

Anyone ever feel the lag when playing fighting games in hd? My friends, who had never played on hdtv, couldn't frc that properly on my hd set this past weekend. They went to anolog and busted out all their frcs without a hitch. They claim that it was my tv that lags. After reading this article I don't think I'll ever play on hd again
