I'm making a Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales thread, you might be posting in it!

To use a bad pun, this one seems to be flying under the radar, and all the impressions/reviews of the japanese version have been very good.

The game looks like a combination RPG/card battle game with extra FF themed minigames added on for bonus awesome. It's got a paper-marioish visual style for battles, and reviews are saying the rest is even better 3D on DS than FF3 was.

I'll be getting this this week, cause I'm too broke for Guitar Hero 2 on 360. Anyone else eagerly awaiting FFF?

Currently the game has an 81% average, with two ~90% scores and one lowball 66% score, no US version reviews yet though.

Well I paid it off today, if the reviews end up being bad I can always cancel. I'm thinking this will be like DQ: Rocket Slime, largely ignored until people slowly realize it's actually good and not just a cash-in style game.

Yes sir. Yet another reason to not ignore it this week!

Hmmmmm I'll have to check this out. It may just be like DQ Rocket Slime where not a lot of people know about how good it is.

I'll get it depending on how well it's received by my CAG brothers (and sisters.) I don't want another Wi-Fi game that sits there and collects dust.

It looks too cute to pass up, I'm getting it for sure tomorrow

I'm probably going to go to Circuit City, buy the new Hilary Duff, a blu ray, and use a $15 off coupon.

I was all about it months ago gearing up for the Japanese release until I read "card-based," then I gave up. I've given card-based games second, third, even fourth chances, and I always end up selling them. Maybe one day when it's cheap, I'll join you online.

Well, Kingdom Hearts CoM was cardbased and SQUARE did a really good job with that one.

Man, this chocobo game comes out and Xenosaga I/II will never see the light of day..!

Ah well, then I guess you might want to skip this one

I wouldn't worry, it'll probably be $16.96 clearance at CC in a few months.

From what I hear, the game isn't really so much about the card battles as it is the collection of minigames you play. I think I read a review that said you only do 5 or 6 card battles in the story mode.

I'm a little unclear about the game's structure. The few reviews I read gave the indication that the minigame battles were where you acquired cards for use in the card battles in the main game, so it's a mixture of minigames/card battle/dungeons.

I do like that the minigames are all FF themed, like the Marlboro Masher Whack-a-mole type thing. The cards in battle are all little cute animeized versions of summons. I'm getting more hyped about it, but also wary that the lack of advertising and hype might mean it'll get cheap real quick too.
Well, Kingdom Hearts CoM was cardbased and JUPITER did a really good job with that one.
Fixed that for you. Game wasn't really developed by Square-Enix.

Seeing more videos and impressions..

I'm gonna get Puzzle Quest instead. This is giving me bad 6 months to clearance vibes. Looks fun though, just not day 1 fun.

Yeah, had this come out a year ago or so with the Wi-Fi battles I'd be all over it. I honestly had no idea this was out so soon.

The IGN review is favorable (8.3). But, meh, I just don't see myself playing it right now. I still have Wario Master of Disguise sitting here unplayed . With limited sources for cheap preorders (my GR closed, but I still have some cheaply obtained Gamecrazy and EB credit), I just don't see buying games at full price (even in credit) any more when I have no intention of playing them right away.

This is a definite pickup at some time, just not sure when. Maybe if I see it used at Gamecrazy.

I actually haven't played my DS in over a month .

Oh, I agree completely. Despite its good reviews and sold-out launch day, I'm 100% positive this game is going to be clearanced.

I've never played a card battle system type game before. I assume I wouldn't like it, but I want to play this game when I finally will have time. I'll wait for more of the fellow CAG's reviews.

I just beat this game today.

Many of you guys are curious on how this game play like? Well, Final Fantasy Fable Chocobo Tales actually plays like Rub Rub Rabbit or Mario Party, it is loaded with bunch of mini games that involves using stylus such as racing across the moutain, wack-a-mole, air hockey, puzzles and much more. Most of these mini games can last from a range of 20 seconds to a minute. These mini games consits two modes: a battle mode or trial mode. In trail mode, you will try to obtain highest score within alloted time frame and in battle mode, simliar to Mario party, you will go head to head combat against the computer in 4 player mayham. Some of these minigames can be downright frustrated. Contols can sometimes be clunky and unresponsive and won't respond properly. For example, one of the game you have to gather some coins located in the top ds screen. In order to collect these coins, you need to flick your stylus in upward fashion towards your touch screen, this will causing the chocobo to fly up to top screen and gather those coins. A few occassion, the game isn't resposive, cause chochobo to leep much lower. This can be quite annoying if your going for high score. For most part these occurance are very rare, and the majority of these mini games are very enjoyable.

After complete these mini games in story mode you unlock new stages that were unaccessable and reward you with better cards. The higher, the difficulty such as high scores, the better the reward. Many people will think this game is meant for children due to it's cute exterior, but in fact this game can be downright difficult. I found many of gold medal requirements very challenging to mind numbing hard. Of course, these objectives are optional.

How does card game play like? It's vaguely fimiliar to Final Fantasy card mini game that are found in Final Fantasy 8 or 9. Rules are fairly simple, to reduce your opponent life points to zero with your monster cards. Each monster have either one or two symbol: an attack or defensive symbol. When you go on combat you will notice 4 zones: top, bottom, left and right. Once you attack, you opponent will defend with same zone . For example, if attack icon is on the top zone then your opponet will defend on top zone. If your opponet doesn't have a defense symbol symbol, your attack will suceed. If your opponent does have a defense symbol on proper zone, your attack will fail. If both of same zone have the attack icon - damage is cut in half.

The first person who play their card the quickest gets to attack first, after attack mode you go on defensive mode and the opossing player will attack you. Or vice versa if you play the card the slowest. You also get use many special abilites in ths game, but in order to use these abilities you need to fulfill the requirements. For each elemental card you use will give you the same cyrstal. For example, if you use a blue card you will get a blue crystal. Fulfill the requirement decriibe in the card description these special abilities will activate with each sucessful attack or defense.

Throughout the game, card game seldomly comes up. Maybe atleast 6-8 in story mode. For most part, you will be playing more mini game then these battle About 90% of the main story is minigames and 10% battles. It takes about 12-15 beat and maybe 25+ hours to complete, depending on how well you do in those mini games.

Overall, this is a great game for those who enjoy mini games. Not to mention, you can play these mini games or card battles by wi-fi which adds lots of value to this game

This game really should have come out at a different time. So many good DS games I want to play right now. Puzzle Quest, Theme Park, My girlfirend is begging for Purr Pals and Cake Mania, Still haven't played Lunar Knights..

Hey, fatbeer, thanks for the indepth impressions. I've been curious about this title but had yet to see a good rundown on the card battle system. Time to put this in my Gamefly queue.

Yea. I have played about 2 hours so far and I am liking it. I am a big fan of the FF Series so that could be a big reason why. I really never played a card based battle game and so far it's pretty fun. there are like 120 or so Cards to collect and you collect them by beating numerous mini games.

It's pretty addicting to keep beating the mini games in order to recieve Rare card to add to your battle deck. Most of the mini games I played so far are really cool and fun.

I can't wait to put a bit more time into this one.

I just got the game, I'm about 3 hours in, and it's really quite fun, the minigames are based more on skill than luck and the card battle portions are pretty fun as well.
I especially like how the stories that you go though have been changed to have a Final Fantasy theme to them, it's pretty nifty.

Most of stories are releated to well know fairy tales like little red riding hold, ugly duckling or the three pigs. But they added theme final fantasy theme characters such as ramuh or shiva. Also they made huge plot twist compare to original , so it's no where near the actually story.

three pig story-all of them get caught by tomberries

if you can rent PURR PALS before buying it do it. I really didnt care for it.

I really didnt care for this game either (got them both off gamefly)

got them Tuesday and already returned PURR and probally will return the final fantasy one tomorrow or friday. I was really hopeing this had more card battles or RPG type gameplay.

Gamefly has saved me a lot of money this month cause there has already been 3 games i thought i would liked but hated and would be pissed if i paid 35 each for them.

been trying to get theme park but its been in short wait ever since gamefly got it.

right now im starting chapter 3 on the FF game i probally play it 5 hours or so tonight while im watching

jericho then ??? then Lost

I am just over three hours in, and I must say that I'm very impressed with this game so far. Fatbeer's review above captures the gameplay pretty well, but I should add that one of the game's best features is its pickup-and-play feel. You can really play just a minute or two and save and quit when you are done. No backtracking to save points, etc. Plus, the game oozes cuteness, has a great sense of humor, and uses the FF music and characters very well.

LOL yeap you can save anyplace. glad it wasnt like blade dancer A HHHHHHH I NEED SAVE PTS

WAY too short of a game and the chapter 6 is just lame (dont ask me why they just didnt end it at the end of chapter 5)

I thought chapter 6 would been a major chapter but its just air hockey and you beat the boss in less then 5 mins and game over. If i knew ch 6 was this short i would of just finished it up last night and sent it back to gamefly today (will send it back tomorrow)

Total time to beat story mode 8 hours 42 mins

Yea, it isn't really worth its own thread. I beat in a little over 9 hours and got a good bit of cards. If it had a bit more replay i'd really dig it.

I was really looking forward to this game...but reading that it's somewhat short saddens me :( oh well maybe I can wait out on either a trade or a nice price drop before I get it and stick with Puzzle Quest :D

I like this game a lot it reminds me of
bomberland touch ( mini games that unlock story )
and dragon quest rocket slime ( having to save your friends).

Game sounds kind of cute and IGN's review piqued my interest, but I think I'll wait for the inevitable price drop on this one.

Just started playing this game today and just spent ages playing Bomber Wall trying to reach Gold. It looks like this game could absorb you a bit if you're trying to get all the Cards.

I love the graphics. They're perfect for the DS and make me want to pick up Final Fantasy III again...

I've been playing it as well, I'm in the forest or whatever... and stuck on some of the mini games there. Pretty fun game, and I like the card battling.

My complete time was about 21-22 hours. I didn't get all the gold requirements... :(

I don't think I'll ever get gold on the one where you have to match the character class.
