I'm on the fence: Should I upgrade my PSP?

OK, I just picked up SSX and GTA:LCS for the PSP, but I can't play either of them because I'm still running firmware v. 1.5. I have kept that version for all this time for homebrew purposes, and now i can't decide if it is worth giving that up...
But common sense tells me that I should just upgrade to play these new PSP games, and just get my old-school kicks on my old NES.

Opinions? What do you guys think?

if you payed 250+ dollars to play NES games then youre a fool (that goes for everyone, not just the OP) play the games. Sony is going to keep updating the firmware, so you just have to hope coders can keep up (which evidently they can't). So it's just a matter of if you want to play youre 250+ dollar NES or not.

Just upgrade it. They will eventually find a way to crack the newer versions, they always do. Besides, GTA: LCS is awesome and definitely should be played.

Just out of curiosity, what would it take to run these programs/homebrew stuff without a hack? Could someone just get ahold of a PSP devkit and compile some of the emulators and the likes? Or is it more complicated?

SNES and neo geo too.

errr you dont get out much do you :D?

Upgrade because Namco collection is out and Capcom and Taito will be releasing their classic collections soon. Grand Theft Auto: LCS is worth the upgrade alone, isn't that why you bought your PSP in the first place?!

Thanks guys...you're all telling me exactly what I needed to hear! You're right about the $250 NES thing - it sounds really dumb to hang onto EMUs on a system like this. Shit, if I was dead set on emulating oldschool stuff on a handheld, I think we all know of a couple of other (cheaper) ways to do it that wouldn't prevent me from rockin' GTA.

I'm gonna bite the bullet and upgrade here in a minute!

BTW, so far as i know, the only way to emulate with 2.0 with as much freedom as 1.5 is to downgrade your firmware and run emus then. I've heard that you can store the downgrade files on your mem card, and so long as you have a UMD (like GTA) that contains the 2.0 upgrade then you can up/downgrade whenever you want to play emus or new games. Personally, that scares the shit out of me - it doesn't sound like it'd be worth the trouble/risk to the hardware.
And so far, 2.5/2.6 hasn't been hacked even enough to create an executable downgrade from it.
Just FYI...

I am playing GTA now and it is awesome but I was I didn't want to lose my EMU either but when I thought long and hard about it I didn't really get this to play old game I got it to play new ones.

I ended up upgrading mine to 2.5 because I was using the update function at school and I was able to save 2.5 to my system.
dude, there is A LOT more to homebrew than emulators.

PSP Kick and PSP Rhythm are my shit!

1.5 for life
The UMB loaders are nice too....
but I did update to 2.6 last night, and I'm glad I did. I'm having a great time playing SSX and GTA.

Well, if you had only updated to 2.0 you wouldve been able to play your games & homebrew, and you would've been able to downgrade. Guess its a bit late now though.

Edit: Oh shit you fucked up man! I just noticed you updated to 2.6, now not only can you no longer run homebrew, but you can't even use the cheat device released for GTA that lets you spawn helicopters and change weather effects (it only runs up to Firmware 2.5 for now) Check out the cheat device at : WWW.GTAPORTABLE.COM

tsk.. tsk.. tsk.. a lot of clueless guys around this thread.. tsk.. tsk.. tsk..

lets see here, GTA or 50 other games i could 'try' out? hhmm...

oh yeah, and preachers of morality stay out of my face. ;)

^ lol clueless?

How about I have the best of both worlds, with a 1.5 psp and 65 ISO's, and a 2.0 PSP that lets me enjoy GTA and sick SOCOM online matches....clueless? pffftt..............You're actually the one missing out on 2 of the best games available for PSP.

Upgrading to 2.0 is no problem for anyone with a 1.5, because all they have to do is take the few minutes to run MPH's downgrader and they are back to 1.5.

Its just when they upgrade to 2.01 or higher that they are shaq-fu'ed

uand your headbanging ticket stub are awesome!.................... I wish I could spend all my time with youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.!!!

I just downgraded back to 1.5 and I am playing my PSP alot more.

I had not played it in so long the battery was completely dead.

there's a program called version changer that changes the version number the psp reports back as firmware, so you can have 1.5 but when games do firmware checks you can have it show 2.0, this can be dangerous if you forget to change it back to 1.5 when you do a firmware upgrade or something i think but should let you play most games that check

Where can I download firmware 2.0?

Sony only seems to list 2.6 now.

I want to use the firmware loader so I can play burnout without actually upgrading.

I think PSPupdates has 2.0 somewhere.

I just got a gig stick today...I'm already fearing the games that require 2.5. hopefully SFA3 isn't one of them...

yea, isn't that game gonna be infrastructure - enabled too? that's gonna be sweet

I just updated yesterday to play smackdown vs raw 06 and it was well worth it.
I been on 1.5 since the intitial launch. I figured like most said the firmware will continue to update and games will continue to come out requiring firmware updates.

SvR06 requires 2.5 to play
