In N Out vs Tommys
In and Out rules, but up here in WA, you gotta go to Dicks in either Seattle or Spokane
Dicks is pretty good, but I think I like Burger Master better. It is always nice to go to Dicks's after a concert though, their shakes are awesome.

Just had tommy's yesterday. Tasted great with chili cheese burger and chili fries. Still, I'd eat there more often if it wasn't for the heart burn.
I would marry In-N-Out but have torrid love affairs with Tommy's.

In-N-Out is clean and simple, they pay their employees well, use fresh locally sourced beef, humane treatment of animals, blah blah blah. The burger is straight and to the point. I don't even get fries, I get two burgers like a real man.

But then sometimes you get the hankering for that super slutty Tommy's burger dripping with chili and cheese. You know it's bad for you, you know something can't possibly be right, and you know there's better out there, but damned if it doesn't taste good.

OT, since we're on the topic of burgers, I had this one recently. Clipped from my journal.
LMFAO, just at how ridiculous the term American Kobe Beef is. Utterly absurd. It's like champaigne from California. But that burger did look tasty. Best burger in the world?

OH HELL NO. That would be Father's Office on Montana in Santa Monica, hands down. Better than any of the finest gourmet burgers you will ever come across in this world or any other. Of course, it's not fast food, so you again can't compare Tommy's or In n Out to it.

BTW anybody want to meet up at Father's Office, hit me up on the PM. I got first round. That's the best part about the place - they have a fantastic selection of beers. Unfortunately they're only open for Happy Hour through midnight or so most nights (no lunch, open usually around 5 or so), and the place gets ridiculously packed. It can be a HUGE headache.

As for Fatburger, it's okay...definitely hit or miss depending upon location.
In-N-Out is much better than Tommy's to me. I'm admittedly not big on chili burgers --I love burgers and I love chili but not so much together-- but it's also because I find that Tommy's can be inconsistent. The original location isn't guilty of this but the other ones seem to vary a lot in their quality from visit to visit. Whereas I've probably had 800 Double-Doubles at 20 different In-N-Outs and they've all been great.

When it comes to fries though, In-N-Out is actually one of the worst ever. All those claims about fresh-cut fries mean nothing when they have such bland flavor and mediocre texture.
Yeah, definitely get the fries well done and with extra salt when they first come out of the frier, or even more importantly - ANIMAL STYLE! I cannot emphasize that enough. Animal style fries are the only way to eat them. SOOOOOOO tasty.

Oh and In n Out DOES have the same chili peppers as Tommy's! You just have to ask for them, but unfortunately they come in sealed little packets, usually 2 or 3 per packet, and they are STIFF, meaning "fresher". I hate this, because I don't like the crunchy ones - the ones at Tommy's are the BOMB ASS BOMB because you can sort through the container with the tongs and find the "aged" chili peppers that have been marinating in the pickled juice...makes them SO tangy, not quite as hot, but just perfect...and juicy!!! Look for the ones that are wrinkly, squishy, and soft. Those are the best.
Hmmm...never seen a Habit. Maybe I just past by them without knowing. Anyway, one of the perks of Vegas is that most of the restaurants from LA/Cali that I remember/ate at cross over. We even have a Pink's here (inside the Hard Rock). Also, our Mexican food rocks here, though I do have to give LA the slight edge in that department. So you know about that one little hamburger place down by Seaport village by the Hyatt? That place is the shit. Love going there during comic-con.
Dude, seriously fuck the Hard Rock Pink's!!! Sorry. There is only ONE Pink's, and that's the original on La Brea just up from Melrose. For real, any restaurant inside a casino is just not the same as its original, I'm sorry. As for chili dogs, there are better places, but usually they are no name shithole dives. Yeah the line at Pink's is crazy most times (I mean, like 10 am every day there is a line...WTF?). But it's tasty, the options are numerous, the chili is good and the weiners are...pretty good. Not the best I've had, but still very tasty. All things considered, I used to get these hot dogs from a deluxe cart outside the Glendale Home Depot that were just insanely good. No chili, but just awesome awesome hot dogs.
I've actually been to that In-N-Out in Irvine....it's right by the freeway near the UC Irvine school/hospital if I'm thinking of the one you're thinking of. Also, you guys haven't seen the glitzy one we have set out here. It's really nice, and if I remember right, the busiest In-N-Out in the country. They've actually had to increase the drive thru length twice.
Yeah, that's the huge Vegas one. That one and the one in Barstow are insanely busy.

BTW, what about fried chicken places in So Cal? Now I know someone is going to throw out Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles, but only the original on Pico right off La Brea is worthy of going to (but it's a super dump shithole), and last time they overfried my chicken, the bastards.

I nominate Honey Kettle chicken in Culver City (it's on Washington right where it splits off of Culver, in the downtown section). Holy shit that is the best fried chicken. And the buscuits with honey, my God.

Honestly nothing could top the burgers I made at home this weekend.

Top quality organic free range beef, 7 year aged cheddar, carmelized onions, cooked to perfection on a cast iron skillet.

I have an immense weakness for Pink's pastrami burrito dog. Two dogs, plentiful strips of pastrami, onions and cheese all swimming in a tortilla filled with chili. The hour-long wait is worth it. But I limit myself to having it once every quarter-year or my heart would suffer.

I don't think anything beats Honey Kettle for fried chicken in L.A. Roscoe's used to be pretty good but it's just gotten by on name recognition for the past 5 years. No other place gives you chicken and waffles --what a great concept!-- but when neither is done particularly well it doesn't really matter.

As for chains, I think Popeye's is surprisingly good. Plus you can't beat their Tuesday deal of 99 cents for a leg and thigh!

Actually that's what I wrote; the burger at Tops was good but I wouldn't call it the best, and expressed my interest to go to FO =)
American Kobe does sound ridiculous. Blame it on marketing and how they call it Kobe beef instead of Wagyu beef. I know one of these days when I go to Japan, I'm getting me some Matsuzaka beef...

As for chicken, I hate it when people mention Roscoe's. I always get their chicken + waffle combo and I'm always disappointed with the chicken. The waffle though, is top tier.

Hahah, we gonna get an LA CAG meeting up at FO? I'm down. How about May 10th? Or maybe the 17th? We going to the new Culver City location or the SM one?

somebody post a gathering in the West forum, some dood did that last year for a Rock Band party I went to, lol

I live too far from the place so I dont wanna be the main dood.

but 10th or 17th sounds good

I'm up for this as well! We can't let the Tokyo, East coast, and midwest out do us.

Like I said, let's SET IT UP!!! I got first round of drinks. And where the hell is the FO in Culver City?!? That would be heaven, even closer to my office!!!

OMG Sweet baby Jesus! You boys weren't kidding! There is a new one listed in "Los Angeles" and it has "Spirits" as well! Is it open yet?!?

http://www.fathersoffice.com/

Let's make it the 17th at the Culver City/LA location. Someone send me a reminder - BTW now that I know about this new FO in Culver City, I'm going there TONIGHT. I'll let you all know if it lives up to the original location. Looks like they open today. Outstanding.

so right now we have no point of contact, but the 17th leaves us with plenty of time so for now let's compile a list of names who are tentatively down:

karkyco
indy2029
doctorfaustus
kainzero
jekki

if anyone wants to be added / taken off the list please express interest. We'll leave the formal info for later

I gotta go with Tommys on this one. In & Out is a great burger, but even animal style doesn't make it that different then a few other decent burger joints.

Tommy's is special because there is no other burger place that has a Chili burger that comes close to touching Tommys.

The only other place that has a decent Chili burger is the Hat: http://www.thehat.com/loca.htm

I moved to Chicago from SGV a few years ago and haven't been able to find anything close to the 4 places you mentioned.
Maxwell's. if you're in chitown and haven't gone to maxwells, that's almost as bad as these californians dissing tommy's because they've never heard of it. i've been in cali for 6 years now, and maxwell's is one of the things i crave. granted, i almost always get their polish, but their burgers can hold their own, and you can't complain about burgers AND fries for less than a few bucks.

there are a bunch of other local places that are good too, but maxwell's rocks.

tommy's pwns for chili cheese burgers, and they use good quality tomatoes and lettuce too, but it's almost too much chili. i crave it, but i can only take so much of it.

in 'n' out is more of a lowkey, feel like a fast food burger, but don't want mcDs kinda place. it's consistent, it's good, it satisfies you, it tastes more fresh, and doesn't weigh you down, but it doesn't have that draw factor and isn't anything more special than that.

with tommy's you get something that you can't find as easily in a great tasting chili cheese burger.

I'm so sad right now. Yesterday I stopped by an In-n-Out that opened recently in my area and grabbed a burger to go just before a meeting. It turned out to be the very first bad Double-Double of my life. The patty was tough, the sauce was bland, and the cheese and veggies were chilly. I'm never going back there! Thank goodness I've got 5 other locations in my area.

Tommy's for me but only the original holy Trinity of Tommy's locations.

Despite having grown up in Ventura County and passing by the original In-and-Out on a regular basis, I never set foot in one until the mid-90s, mainly because I was with out of town friends who'd heard about it. It's a good burger but to me nothing is especially distinguished about it.

My first encounter with Tommy's was in late 1978. There were just three of them then, and a bunch of pretenders, as mentioned by another poster. The Rampart location was the original but coming from Thousand Oaks made the two in the Valley the locations I frequented. That first time, I was unsure of the desirability of chili on a burger and worse, a guy sitting in his car in the parking lot with the door wide open, had spilled chili down his arm and was screaming "It burns, it burns!" like Linda Blair in 'The Exorcist.'

I had mine without chili that night and didn't try it the proper way for a few years. Still, it was great and had a very distinctive taste. But I didn't have my own wheels yet, so my visits were subject to the whims of my older friends.

One of the great aspects of Tommy's was that they were open 24/7. On countless occasions we'd be up at 3 AM and decide we were both bored and hungry, and nothing short of driving 40+ miles to one of the two nearer Tommy's would put things to rights. Back then, really good newstands that stayed open all night were few in LA, so we knew where all of those were as well. Back before the Web and the appearance of super-sized bookstores with really extensive magazine selections, knowing about those newstands was a lifeline for a voracious reader.

(The best was the World News at Hollywood and Cahuenga, followed by the one at Ventura and Van Nuys Blvds., then the one at Robertson and I forget which cross street. The last was the farthest drive but had the best selection of imports and some arcade video games that one would rarely see elsewhere. There were a few other good newstands but they didn't stay open all the time. A critical quality.)
We have both in Vegas. I jsut had Tommy's the other weeks, but I love, love In-N-OUt. I have yet to find a person who doesn't. Not only that, but you can get there practically day after day and eat there food and feel great. Can't say the same about McDonalds. With Tommys, their burgers are delicious, but they seem to give me heart burn (probably the chili). I love getting their burgers, though, since I can use the chili for the awesome frys.
I agree with you on the In N Out thing. Tommys does terrible things to my stomach but is good every once in awhile.

haha that story is awesome ^_^v

I recently got the breakfast burrito from Tommys...

gonna post pics on the cag blog soon lol

man, some good places to eat brought up in this thread.

In n out is my pick. Tommys is def. second to it. Like the comparison between Tommys and the slut on the side, very true.

Dicks up in Seattle is great. Kinda random with the tartar sauce, but it works

Fatburger is good, but sometimes inconsistent between locations, plus a bit on the pricier side vs the other 2

Don't know who named Father's Office top burger in the US, they must've drank to much that night. Beers are good there, but the burger is just 'ok'. 25degrees is a better premium burger for the price, but small joint. Wish i could find a good burger/pub out in socal like in ny and chicago

Pinks, eh... its just okay. Much better dogs to be had in LA (Vicious Dogs)
If you are ever in Chicago, go to Superdawg, thats a chicago style hot dog. freaking awesome. Portillos is a chain up there that also has a location or 2 in SoCal, pretty tasty.

fixed to 25 degrees

gotta mention white castle, good for a snack and on the run, but not in the same class as in n out and tommys

if in vegas, try the Burger bar. they also have a great kobe burger
whats the best item** on tommy's menu? (never ate there before)
There isn't much there. It's very much like the other guys in having a very simple menu. When I first started going there they didn't even have fries. Those were added some time in the 80s.

Essentially you have the burger with options for leaving off ingredients (I don't like tomato on burgers, for example) and high high it stacks. 1, 2, or 3 patties, though they could probably be induced to put on more. They didn't have triples on the menu originally but would make them on request. Apparently, those requests were so frequent it was made into a true menu choice.

Yeah...I think (not sure) I replied saying that day was no good for me. Weekdays are usually reptty good for me. The best way to coordinate a meetup might be to exchange facebooks. Any LA ppl on facebook? If so PM with your address or the email you use w/ ur facebook.
