The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

SRG just tweeted that Shopify starts orders at 1,000. Just like someone else mentioned. Which means I got the artbook. Patting myself on the back right now.

Order #2053 confirmed

Bummed out about the artbook, I didn't know that was included. Honestly would have paid extra for it if it was an option.

Glad they were able to get their sale to work this time though.
I'm also bummed about the artbook and that is the reason I placed the order for the game in the first place. Since my number is 2029 and I'm not getting the artbook I will probably sell or trade my copy of the game. I already own it digital and only really wanted this was for the artbook but I was not able to order it right away today. When I saw all the low numbers others had I thought I had a chance but I was wrong. Win some lose some.

I was able to get the LRG variant cover but didn’t realize that SRG was releasing today. Glad I saw a tweet from CAG. Didn’t get the art book as I was order #2229 but glad I was able to get the game.

Since their Shopify page didn’t limit orders I’m sure that a lot of people who think they missed the art book will still get one.

Some guy on Twitter was talking about adding 100+ to his cart.

that sucks.

I really wanted a physical copy of Runier, and kept checking the thread for updates... but somehow still completely missed out on it.

you missed the link that someone posted at around the same time it was supposed to go live? And was available for at least an hour?

You have a second chance.

Their website just went down but I got my order in.

I didn't even know it was going up for sale today. I figured it would take them a few days to get everything set up.

That's what I get for prioritizing my responsibilities. Never again

They'll have more copies up later (don't think they said when but I don't think it's today). It also sounds like there were a lot of orders for more than 1 copy and they're going through and cancelling them.

Yeah I saw that too, but I figure it's kind of far down the line for that since it will probably be after they ship everything, replacements, etc., and by then I might forget about it all over again. lol oh well circle of life

I don't even want this game.  But someone is working really hard to make sure I can't get it, and damn it, the only person who can prevent me from buying games is my wife, not some stranger(s) on the Internet!  So I got one.

I better not get that buyer's remorse like that Italian guy who bought the last Krusty Rib Sandwich...

Do you happen to know when the second batch is?
If my memory from past orders is correct it’ll be 12:00pm EST tomorrow.

Edit: After looking at the tweet for the 2nd batch of Immortal Redneck I remembered correctly as long as they stick to their typical release times.

Yep, all part of the limited run game. Make your first batch small so it sells out quick, then people perceive rarity and buy in the second batch so they don’t “miss out.”
Incorrect. Not a single limited game company makes the first batch smaller than the second batch. Some do half and half and others like LRG do well more than half in the first batch and fewer in the second. Nice try though.

The people who really want it snap it up immediately, and the rest get it on a less-urgent basis. Conventional retail releases sell faster initially, too.

Personally, I keep assuming only LRG sells out immediately, and usually don't set reminders to buy other limited titles immediately.

You're the same type of person that would complain twice as hard if the entire run dropped all at one time.

Having dual drops is a massive advantage to customers. It gives you two opportunities to be available at a particular time. It's the perfect system. You'd be throwing a fit if things popped up at a random time on a particular day like many collectables and art drops do.

I never complained. If I want the game I buy it. I agree the two drops is great for customers because people work, etc. I just find it fishy that the first batch nearly always sells out within an hour (usually less) but the second, supposedly smaller batch lasts days. I’m by no means calling out SLG specifically as they have some of the best communication out of all the limited companies. I think they’ve done a great job and I wouldn’t hesistate to support them if a game comes up that I want. I’m just pointing out something I’ve observed in regard to how quick the first batch sells out when speaking about limited games in general. You have every right to believe what you want just as I have the right to believe what I want. Funny how many on this forum love to pick fights if someone posts an opinion they don’t agree with.
The problem is, you've now shared this "opinion" a couple of times and it's actually possible to factually prove your opinion is garbage. Many of the limited release companies use store websites where users can see how many copies are put up and how many are left. Unless this is some grand conspiracy where they have figured out a way to manipulate stock numbers in real time, your opinion lacks any factual basis and simply shows ignorance and denial on your part. It also is not some innocent statement as convincing enough people that your opinion is correct could negatively impact the businesses you are sharing this opinion about. Opinions and words can and do have consequences and there's nothing funny about the fact that you lack the intelligence to realize what it is you are doing.

Fair enough, removed my comment and will not mention it again. I just can’t take everything at face value when I see comments like “things are slowing down this year” and the releases double/triple. I also never said any specific company was doing this, it was an observation about “limited” games in general. As I said I really do like these limited companies and I would encourage people to support them if they like a particular game that is released in physical form.

Personally, I’m just happy they give like two weeks (and plenty of reminders) for open pre-orders on Switch standard editions. I really, really appreciate that.

I don't think stores got more than one copy if any at all.
My one local store couldn't find their copy and it was indeed only 1. Wonder if they will do another round, but this reminds me of Payday 2 for the Switch and how stores got like 1 copy at most.

Special Reserve Games confirmed that all 500 art books for Ruiner went in the first batch. If your order was 1500 or below you got one. Anything between 1500 and 1750 would be hit or miss due to cancellations from people trying to over order.
