The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. I got my order in so I didn't bother checking after. I thought it might sit like Blue Rider but I kinda wanted it so I preordered.
These games have very small print runs and they are very nice releases; Cursed Castilla is definitely more of a crowd gatherer than Blue Rider was (Even though I personally love Blue Rider).

I heard that they might make some more of the cursed castilla. I'm checking play asia everyday... I won't be missing out on anything else.

1. that's not a promise or a contract... as of that posting 3000 was the limit.
2. What's to stop LRG or Play Asia themselves from making more.
This isn't one of our releases - but in the case of our releases - we're only legally and contractually allowed to manufacture as many units as we say on our site. We have no legal rights to reprint any of our past titles.

In the case of these PA exclusives, the wording has always been murky on what exactly is limited: the game itself or the LE bundle? If it's just the LE bundle, they might release the standard editions of these further down the line.

Do PA shipments always require a signature? My mailer person won't simply leave the package for some reason.
They do require a signature, as that was part of the reason they no longer offer so many shipping options. I'm sure they had many orders that where delivered, but without a signature, there was no way to confirm delivery, as there cheaper shipping isn't tracked the entire way.

I have also had to sign for some and not others, when I specifically see signature required as the shipping option. So I think some postal staff do the work and get the signature, while others don't bother.

Damn. Cursed looks pretty cool. I had no idea what it was. Id seen that cover art somewhere before but paid it no mind because it didnt look interesting. Had I know it was a ghosts n goblins kind of game Id have snatched one up.

The next Play Asia limited edition (#4) has been announced, Semispheres for PS4:

Another easy pass for me, I don't care for this style of puzzle game.
Yeah, easy pass for me too. Why do they keep releasing puzzle games? can't they see by the speed in which they sell their releases that the shmup and platformers sell out much faster? That's what their customers want ! Why can't they release PS4 versions of Soldner X 1 and 2? can you imagine if they did a box set of both how FAST that would sell out. Isn't this eastasia's flagship title? why sit on it?

I totally agree, and you know I never thought about PS4 versions of the Soldner games! Those would probably not be that hard to port over and would be guaranteed to sell out, even with much larger print runs.

Interestingly, the PlayAsia Soldner X2 release is down to 395 available, which is still a fairly large number. It's a great release, I'm surprised that it hasn't sold out by now. You'd think there would be enough Vita/Shmup fans to sell it out by now.

We'd already pressed and sold 3,200 copies of the game through Limited Run so that kind of plays into it. The fact that only 400 copies are left is actually pretty surprising as it means they've moved nearly 6,000 copies of a game they originally thought would only sell 3,000 or less.

Hmm I have Aerea pre-ordered from amazon already.  Hopefully the cards aren't the only thing in the CE and we will see more info when the sign-up link goes up.

They are really stretching the definition of a "collector's edition". All Play-Asia gets is a PAL region version with 25 cards. The regular NTSC collector's edition already comes with the CD soundtrack.
Yeah, I was just going to point this out. The US version listed on Amazon comes with a soundtrack and is listed as a "Collector's Edition." While the cards seem cool, if that's the only difference then I'm not importing from Play-Asia for this one.

Cursed Castilla is the only one I've gotten from them and it's simply because it's a good game.  I've wanted a physical copy and to support the dev ever since he ported it to the Ouya.

My cursed Castillo still hasn't arrived. I'm guessing my PO has screwed up- usually drop the pink slip saying come and get it- gonna go check today.

My Cursed Castillo just arrived yesterday. Give it a week or so. Play-Asia packages can really vary in their delivery time frame.
Very true, as customs clearance is the wild card in these situations. An item can clear in a day, or weeks, and only then does it enter the standard US mail stream. I had a package come from HK awhile back, and it arrived within 6 days(standard shipping, not express), and that was faster than I've gotten some packages from within the US, so postal deliveries can be a strange mistress to say the least.

Yeah, GA. Just wondering cause they're sending the surveys that I usually get 1-2 weeks after delivery.

I'm assuming that the customs that took place is in Los Angeles so I'm guessing that you'll see your copy either today or tomorrow. I'm from California so that's probably how I got mine sooner.

Yep, LA is the central customs hub for items coming from Asian countries. Then once cleared, they go by plane or truck around the states. So normally, west coast users are going to see a package before and east coast user would, but there are always variables in these situations.

Planes that are heading east, may not have a full load of express or priority mail, so they will top off the load with what ever can fill the plane. So a package that should be going ground, gets an upgrade to "first class" so to speak. Then of course there's the human error of a "air mail" item getting stuck on a truck, instead of a plane, and that is going to take longer than it should have.

To many examples to list, but you can see my point.
