The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Anyone heard any info on a physical release on Sky Force Reloaded? Couldn't find anything. Just this website shows a picture of physical, but not sure if that means anything.

No and their tweet was not clear. Since there is a Steam boxed copy pictured, I just assumed it was announcing the upcoming release of the games on those platforms and not physical releases of the game.

What was the print size for Tokyo 42 at Strictly Limited Games?

Looks like they still have 840 available a few weeks after orders went up.  Too bad they are not a US publisher as I likely would've ordered it if that was the case.  The only non-US limited type games I am trying to collect are the Play-Asia releases as they are super high quality especially for the price.

Edit:  did some more searching and it looks like it is limited to 2600 copies.  I have a feeling this would have sold a whole lot quicker if LRG released it.

That applies to pretty much every release, as LRG has the biggest following thus far, and a solid track record. But even Play-Asia has sold a title quickly when it was of a higher quality. But for most titles, they sit awhile, and I don't think any of these places expects much difference.

It will sell out. Like with any other limited release. It might take a while but it will sell out like the others.

^This.

LRG's Breach & Clear took a while to sell out too FYI and most of us know what happened with that. Not saying this will happen here or with every similar situation, but I'll let you make your own judgments on if you should buy now or later.

And when it sells out, People are going to complain about missing out despite having weeks to purchase.

I know this isn't a NA release, but it should still apply.

Just wanted to give East Asia Soft a shout out, they have been one of the most responsive and helpful companies since I reached out about my issues. I still wish they had a partner that could offer in states shipping, but I'd give their Twitter person a raise

Is Edith Finch really as good as the high review scores? This doesn’t look to have a set production limit so I wonder if they will be selling these for a long time.

Some places produce qty based on preorders, and then do a "%" on top of that, so that way supply last awhile. Then the majority of interested consumers can be sure to get a copy.

Breach & Clear sold out in 108 minutes. I counted every one of those minutes because it was such a good moment for me after years of struggling on the game development side.

The swiftness it sold out with was both a blessing and a curse because it set the expectation that everything we release would sell that fast.

Just ordered a copy of Cat Quest from Walmart for $20 How the heck did this become so rare just a few weeks after physical release.
It's a smaller release that ended up being good.

That said, prices for it are insane. I'm sure it'll get a reprint sooner or later, though. It's not a Sodesco/LRG title.

It seems to be available on Play-Asia, it seems to be the US release, states it in the further info section.

Thanks for that. I couldn't find a free shipping code but used "mypsvita" for $3 off which made shipping like $2.75. I hadn't heard about this until it was posted today and I looked it up. I think it will be pretty enjoyable for only $22. I didn't know PA sold US games.

Edit: Literally a minute after I ordered it came back in stock at Walmart for $20! I just can't win!

Link for Cat Quest at Walmart? I can't find it

Since this game isn't even out yet, will I actually get a sealed copy if I buy from GS? They have ripped me off so many times by sending "used" games as "new" when I buy them on their webpage.

Also is there any kind of free shipping code? SAVER won't work and they are trying to charge $5 to ship. Thanks!

I would suggest reserving it online with a local store. Gamestop is regularly shipping games in those glue cardboard mailers and they end up damaging the case art and plastic if you care about that kind of thing.

Recently received an order from another retailer using those glue cardboard mailers. First time I've seen one of those.. of course the game arrived crushed. What kind of moron invented this thing?

SAVER only works for in stock items, not pre-orders. For every new title I have ever bought from them as a pre-order, they have all come sealed. As no stores have them gutted yet, if your buying before hand, so not likely. If you order after release, it's a roll of the dice.

I still haven't received my Mario Odyssey Joy-Cons from Play-Asia yet. Ugh their shipping takes forever.

It worked for me. Well, I got a message saying it wouldn't on the last checkout page, but I wasn't charged shipping.

Mmmmm, they may have changed their policy. SAVER to my knowledge has always been in stock items only, but honestly, I'm no expert on GS ANYTHING(so I could be wrong)! LOL

$40 is too much for a remake of a SNES game that looks like crap with that new art style. Could buy the old cart for that price.

Insulting Square gave us this and not Mana Collection for Switch.

When did you order? It takes at least two - three weeks to get things for me.
Well; it was supposed to be shipped out October 27th. They didn't contact me to tell me I'd be in the second wave. It shipped like mid November. I think it's a Customs but it takes like a month. The Green and Pink Joy Cons took at least a month.

BTW, Signature Edition Games sent an email out saying the PS4 version of Count Lucanor is in stock and starting to ship. No mention of the Vita version though.

You already got Cursed Castilla Vita? I can't even track my package... Singpost says arrived in US on 11/29, USPS says it can't be tracked.
It's not mine. I didn't order Cursed Castilla Vita since I have the PS4 version.

USPS stopped tracking PA packages a few years ago after letting a contract expire. The only thing you can do know is hope it comes to you.

It should arrive for you this week or by next Wednesday. The wait time is largely due to customs I bet. Standard wait time is about 2 - 3 weeks.
