The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

yup. Where else can you get a physical copy of Oreshika and Soul Sacrifice Delta in English? Not like NA has that.

Or an English copy of Gravity Rush Remastered that isn't the OOP NA version.

Any thoughts on Backer-exclusive physical editions, such a Indivisible for Switch?

The pre-orders are officially closed, but if you e-mail [email protected], they’ll send you a link to the backer survey where you can then pre-order a special physical edition for whichever console you choose, an extra digital copy for whichever console you choose (and a preview as well), as well as other add-on items. It costs $60 with shipping but comes with everything pictured below :

(I went with the Switch version)

Really? Even if the last call cutoff was in December?

Indivisible will still be sold at retail stores.

Yep; just send them an e-mail. May take a few days, but they’ll send you the survey to make your choices and pre-order.

Yes, it will be sold at retail stores, but this version will not be.

Will the standard also come with a manual? If it doesn't, that's enough to make me go for the limited. Gotta have manuals!!!!!

I would say probably not. Everything pictured is for that Collector’s Edition.

I hear you; I love a good manual. Send them an e-mail!

I just picked up a PS VR. Any releases that are getting rare/uncommon? At this moment I only have four physical VR games: Doom, Job Simulator, Paranormal Activity, and Skyrim.

Is it worth picking up for $40 at GS? I have a couple of hundred thousand points to use. I’m also considering getting Psychonauts.
Psychonauts is a bit cheaper at Gamestop ($21.97 new) and likely will head into the hard to find category once Gamestop sells the majority of their copies since it is already OOS at Best Buy and Amazon. If you do buy it new, and gutted, make sure the download code for the bonus Psychonauts game is not redeemed yet though.

I just got an email response from Indiegogo about Indivisible, they sent me a link and I was able to place a pledge/order for a Collector's Edition of Indivisible.  I had emailed them on Friday about it.

Let's hope, as I thought it was a done deal we would have seen Gaugamelee by now for the Vita as well. Especially after the PS4 was done and sold out quick thru Vblank. Sadly, when we don't see a version announced like this, it's because the developer doesn't have one planned.
Or they have no interest at all. They never considered a Vita version release for Guacamelee besides "we'll look into it" after people kept asking them about it on Twitter.

Yeah, that really sucks to hear, but no surprise really. I mean how much work did Drinkbox actually do for that PS4 release? I would think the bulk of the heavy lifting was on "VBlank's" side of the equation, so it seems easy money on the Vita release, but I guess not.

The only legit pill I could swallow for a Vita version not happening would be that it's not the most deluxe version offered. I know some developers have bugs up the butt when it comes to offering the most complete version, so I understand that. But no way the Vita even as a "vanilla" offering doesn't sell 2000-3000 copies easy. Seems like a pretty good return, for little to no work, but who can say for sure?

Signature Edition Games emailed me about Darkest Dungeon: Ancestral Edition for PS4 ($29.99) and Switch ($39.99). Both include Crimson Court and Shieldbreaker DLC.

A note says:
Isnt this game coming to the states? I think there was a placeholder for the PS4 version on Amazon but i dont think the Switch placeholder is up yet. Also if it is coming to the states, what is the difference between SE version and the regular version that are coming here?

pretty sure it is getting a physical stateside also, but haven't been able to 100% confirm that either way

Really hope that the physical copies on switch incorporate the patch for the new dungeon it adds, otherwise they are shipping a game with a game breaking bug :\

Wondering if SoM is gonna go OOS quickly and become scarce

The Amazon PS4 placeholder disappeared. I'd like to know what's going on with the US release,

It's Gamestop Exclusive, if you want it then get it. You'll regret it later if it goes OOS.

Secret of Mana remake, which I need to order. fuck
Yeah, really wish it wasn't another Gamestop exclusive. Rumor is there might be a switch port though so I'd be down for that, even more so if they also localize the seiken collection

FYI Job Simulator continues to grow in scarcity at GS

Is there a list of GameStop exclusives anywhere?
There might be, but for now you can try what I do. I just search "only at" on GS.com and it seems to come up with all the gamestop exclusives. There are a ton of random junk items, so I just sort it by console. 99% of the ones that come up with the word "Edition" in the game title are not truly exclusive to GS, just that version. The only exception to that I can think of is The Sexy Brutal: Full House Edition. Hope that helps for now :)

Another Gamestop exclusive - Wuppo - is now on sale for $14.99.  It also comes with a soundtrack CD.

Ha came to post about Wuppo. I think it had a pretty small run! I got the one and only copy. Obviously opened...it does have an insert (warning thing) and a little piece of paper showing how to play. It's just one small piece smaller than a post card with like a few vague things on it, but worth noting if you're worried about a complete copy.

Yeah, I also got a gutted copy. I think every Gamestop may have only gotten in one copy to sell so the print run is likely equal to the total number of Gamestop stores, plus another couple thousand to sell on the website.

Darn, the used copy I asked my local Gamestop to transfer from a different store had the soundtrack CD but no inserts. I guess I'll have to learn the game as I go.

In other news...

https://gematsu.com/2018/02/owlboy-ps4-switch-physical-edition-launches-may-29

Soedesco will release a physical version of Owlboy for PlayStation 4 and Switch on May 29 in North America and Europe, the company announced.
Count me in for a PS4 copy.

Thanks for the heads up. I wonder if any of these GS exclusives that bombed will ever be worth anything (deformers is another one that comes to mind). They may be super rare, but if no one wants them it won't matter.
