The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

I'm not an expert on websites/servers/hosting/whatnot but don't most servers have some type of safeguards against bot activity?

It's just disappointing to think that someone is do petty as to continue doing this. SRG is by no means perfect but this is simply childish behavior. All I can imagine is it's some disgruntled fan.
The cynic in me thinks scalpers are behind the attacks on SRG. The LRG variant sold out in less than a minute, which is fast for them even given the small print run. And it's already been shown people can get around those LRG limits pretty easy if they want, plus, the LRG variants of SR games have a track record of commanding some pretty big money, so might as well take down the cheaper alternative for as long as possible.

I mean, people want hundreds for them on eBay right now and they have em in hand too. AND people are paying smh.

Modern DDoS attacks are immensely powerful and difficult to deter because of the Internet of Things. Most hosting platforms provide some level of security against these attacks, but generally you get what you pay for.

I don't understand why someone is picking on SRG.  It's not like they are a big threat to the limited game market and what is really being accomplished by bringing them down each time they try to release a game?  Somebody really needs to get a life..

They probably got tired of Sarge's constant dog remarks.

I for one welcome our new feline overlords.

Going off what I know about their first release, someone definitely felt wronged by them. Otherwise no reason to target them over everyone else.

Or maybe best marketing strategy to date by a limited publisher.

Looks like because of the constant attacks on SRG website that they've partnered with Limited Run to sell the copies of Ruiner.
I know these two companies have a healthy relationship and partnership, but it is still extremely cool of LRG to come to the aid of SRG. It's incredibly fucked up of whoever is trying to impede these guys' sales.

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but Play-Asia is offering a LE bundle for Bullet Girls Phantasia(PS4/Vita). It's kind of on the high side, but cool enough I guess. All I would want is the art book, and I'm really starting to not even bother with those, but there is a standard edition offered as well. Even though this is a LE, no set numbers are applied, as they are printing to order(plus some extra I'll assume). So no telling how long these may or may not last, but I don't think they'll disappear anytime soon.

RUINER
TOMORROW:
May 24th at 12 noon CDT
**at a completely new online store**

We're extremely pleased to report that our friends (and heroes) at Limited Run Games have stepped up to partner with us to sell and release the Special Reserve version of Ruiner on PS4.

IF YOU CANNOT MAKE TOMORROW don't worry, it won't be your last chance.

We will hold back some of the stock and later announce a second on-sale date (to be determined) to give time for this change to reach fans around the world.

So they're supposed to have an update at 9 AM CST today and... it's been an hour and nothing still. I get the feeling this won't go smoothly.

A lot of people seem to think the SRG copy will go on sale at LRG's site but they said that wasn't the case. But their own site is still down.

So, Ruiner is going up for sale in a little over an hour at some still unknown website?  This has got to be the most poorly planned limited release yet....

The smart thing to do is just release this as an open pre-order a la LRG's switch releases, Cosmic Star Heroine etc. They've obviously underestimated demand for this game. 2000 copies is nowhere near enough considering LRG's 1000 copies sold out in under a minute and their attempt at a release on SRG has been crashed by traffic/DDOSing twice now.

They already have their copies. I think the ship has sailed when it comes to doing an open pre-order. That said, the demand does definitely outshine the print run, so they should have done a larger run. Also, WTF is actually happening with this today? I don't see any details anywhere, and we were supposed to get more info two hours ago.

From what I understand, the site went down due to a bot attack, which is either someone who's trying to buy multiple copies (and if they go to a pre-order model, there's no guarantee that whoever (or whomever) are using the bots would still want to buy up as many copies anymore) or someone maliciously attacking the website bc they're mad about something.

With that said, SRG historically hasn't been the most well run storefront so...

They are now planning to release the link via e-mail, Facebook, Twitter and their website at the sale time.  You apparently don't need an account to buy.  Curious to see how this goes.

I have my LRG copy.  Trying to get the fucking SRG copy as well.  But this link they are supposed to be sending out is MIA.  Talk about cutting the shit close lol

Got one

That was easier than I thought.

Man...I hope they ship these in boxes.  Really don't want to deal with damaged shit.

Yeah my order was at like 1300-something. So I guess I was way too slow, but still happy just to get the game!

But it's still up, so maybe it didnt go as fast as everyone thought.

Got one! My order number is 1139. Did anyone get below 1000? Or hopefully, orders started at 1000...
Yeah, I'm pretty sure they started at #1000, based on the speed of order #'s being listed going up, and that nobody has said anything under 1000. I went really fast thanks to autocomplete and got #1019

My guess is order numbers started at 1000, so if you got like 1257, you are the 257th order.  I was 1272, and I don't believe anyone got below 1000.

Congrats to all of us for getting the art book!
There's no mention of how they're gonna handle the artbooks... they said first 500 orders would get them initially but due to the short notice, I'm sure some people will be upset if they didn't hold some back for the 2nd wave.

I get the feeling they didn't put any type of limit on the orders and they're gonna have a lot of cancellations.

Order #2053 confirmed

Bummed out about the artbook, I didn't know that was included. Honestly would have paid extra for it if it was an option.

Glad they were able to get their sale to work this time though.
