The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

I wish Amazon wasn't the only place selling the NA version of Flashback for the Switch...  I thought ordering two would force a box, but these were smaller than I thought they'd be.  Into an oversized envelope they went.

I cancelled Flashback personally, the manual doesn't even fit into the steelcase like wtf

also Ruiner will be available on the 9th

I guess I lucked out as Amazon sent my one copy in a bubble mailer but it arrived in great condition. Still wish Best Buy would have sold this as I would have liked to have the 20% off GCU discount on it. Amazon considers it a "Collector's Edition" so no Prime discount for preorder.

Since I have an Amazon distro center in town, I've gotten a decent amount of things this past year in bubble mailers, with a rather high success rate in regards to no damages. While I would prefer a box, I've had some items arrive damaged within a box, and just fine with a bubble mailer. Truth can and will be stranger than fiction more often than not. LOL

I was planning on getting this for the Vita from LRG but after seeing this I'm going to have to think about it. Its a really nice release and looks awesome but now to see how LRG will handle theirs.
Predicting that LRG will charge $10 to $15 more and give you a reversible cover.

Anyone have experience replacing damaged games with Play Asia? I just got the Dimension Drive LE for Switch and the box is caved in and creased. Unlike their PS4 and Vita games which they place in bubble wrap they used Styrofoam peanuts which pressed against the packaging causing the damage to the game box.

I looked up their policy and it says that they don't do returns if there's minor damage to packaging. It doesn't say anything about replacements though.

You just have to contact customer service and go from there. What you describe could be bad enough to get a replacement, or it may not, as I'm sure they will require pics before going forward. If you paid with Paypal(which I recommend EVERYONE use), then you can go through them in a worst case. Even if PA doesn't decide your item is damaged enough, Paypal only requires to show it's "damaged" in some way, and then PA will have to refund or replace said item.

Thanks. Put in a ore order. I’m wondering if LRG might have been wronged by the lengthy delay at this point? No reason for me to go that route now unless they have a pretty nice CE.
Yeah, I'm expecting something along the lines of their better CE, but still nothing I'll probably break my current "no CE" run so far. Even though the NS version is for sure the best standard offered version, I still expect the PS4/Vita versions to do just fine. There's enough people who probably will get the PS4 due to better performance(if true or not), and the Vita has no problems moving these better titles in smaller run sizes.

Was it held up because they messed up the vita or something like that? Vaguely remember LRG saying they had to go back and start over.

Psikyo Collection is available for pre-order for Nintendo Switch for $34.99:

https://www.play-asia.com/psikyo-collection-vol-1-multi-language/13/70c7gd?mc_cid=52a9d771f4&mc_eid=96f0f0a592

I'd get it for PS4, don't have a Switch.

Contains Strikers 1945, Sol Divide, Samurai Aces, and Gunbird.
Very interested in this. Also would prefer PS4. What are the chances of that happening? And/or possible NA release?

Should get it to be safe as I will get a Switch eventually...

Pre-ordered the Psikyo collection as soon as those emails went out. A physical copy of Gunbird alone would be worth >$40 to me, so four great SHMUPS for that price is a steal IMO. And of course don't forget to use that $3 coupon!

I've been on the fence about that Psikyo collection. I know there are plenty of shmup fans around here; what do y'all think? Are Striker/Samurai Aces/Gunbird awesome enough that it's worth having all of them, or are they similar enough that just picking one would suffice? I've had kind of a casual, flirty relationship with shmups for most of my life, but lately I think it might be turning into more of a full-blown, passionate love affair.

Anyway, just wondering what people think about all the games. Thanks, friends!

I think I’m bout to grab a copy from Play-Asia. A couple pennies shy of $40 shipped after GEMATSU coupon code. So $10 per game. They’re priced at $8 per game in the eShop so $2 tax per game for a physical copy is really not that bad at all. I’m kinda doubtful this makes it to the West. But I’ve been wrong before.

What do you guys think? Physical version gets released outside of this Korean region version? Shmups are hard to say.

Also, is this guaranteed to be a physical release & not some damn code for all 4 games? There’s nothing that says you’ll get an actual physical cartridge. I’d be pissed if I bought it then it was just some damn code in a box.

Heard the games are good. Gunbird seems to be a fan favorite.

I'd think a Western release for this would be unlikely, but who really knows? At least the price is reasonable as it is, even if shipping is going to suck. And I still think it's reasonable to assume all the games will actually come on the cart, although you gotta appreciate the hard work of Activision and Capcom for putting the question in people's minds to begin with!

I pre-ordered the Psikyo collection as soon as I saw it announced. I love shmups, and those are all really quite good. It's also a great value to have so many put together in one release like that.

Yeah, I looked into these a little more on my own and I think I'm going to bite. All the vertical scrollers support tate mode, so whenever that flip grip comes I'm going to have a shmup party.

Thanks all for the recommendations!
