The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Exactly. All the unsold stock LRG is gonna have at the end of the year but they still won't lower prices. PS4 Thimbleweed Park anyone??

Blind boxes are robbery but people are dumb enough to buy them unfortunately.
they not going to drop prices. they know these things can be sold out eventually. i havent bought anything from them for a while. u can actually buy some of their games cheaper on ebay than buying from them.

i heard theres a 15% off coupon over $25 on ebay today. time to time ebay has coupons. so use that.

Yeah, this is very true, as I've seen it first hand on a pretty regular basis. Even for some of the more limited runs, they can still go for less.

I saved $15 on La-Mulana EX on vita by buying it on Ebay after the dust settled.  I couldn't justify $35 just to preserve the game I already owned digital, but $20 shipped for an opened copy was an easy pill to swallow.

Well here's a pairing I don't know what to make of, as Capcom is teaming up with Pix'n Love for a limited edition Mega Man 11 bundle in EU. Now for those of you who don't know, Pix'n Love has made some of the best gaming related books ever, as they have many amazing books with only a handful ever translated to English. Now the only thing that rivals their great books, is probably how poor their service has been in the past.

In some was this is a perfect pairing, as they where once tops, much like Capcom, only to fall from grace due to their own boneheaded business practices. Well they have reworked their site, so hopefully this means a new beginning(just like Capcom seems to be experiencing), as the do make some amazing books, but service......ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK! LOL

They weren't new or even GameStop "new," but the GameStop four preowned games for $20 sale been beddy beddy good to me:

Aerea Collector's Edition - PS4
Blackguards 2 - PS4
Cladun Returns: Sengoku - PS4
Marvel Pinball Epic Collection Vol. 1 - X1
Rogue Stormers - PS4
World to the West - PS4

Most of these were converted from new to used, and with the Pro discount, they were $4.50 each. I can't afford to buy games just to set them on the shelf anymore, so I'll be playing Cladun first. :)

It’s hard to ignore the GameStop sales, she simple fact that you don’t pay shipping costs is a huge advantage over other sites- especially eBay.
The 4 for $20 has me tempted to drive around to different GameStop’s in my area to continue to collect the pricier PS3 games (now at $5 a piece) and to pick up some PS4 hidden gems as well.

Pro-tip: Dollar General is still selling $30 GameStop gift cards for $25 each in store until close of business today. That way, you can save even more if you're planning to buy at least $40 worth of games. And I also picked up Assassin's Creed: Rogue and Dante's Inferno for PS3.

What games?

What games?
I don't want to come off as a smart ass, but the best way to figure this out is to go to the GameStop website, check preowned prices for PS4 and/or Xbox One games by lowest price, and you will be able to check the inventories at stores near you to see what titles are available in your area. Checking the website before going to the store has saved me gas over the years. I would suggest buying titles that are $9.99 before discount to get the best deal. There are cheaper titles such as Geometry Wars 3 that are $6.99 and Has Been Heroes that are $2.99 that qualify, but I'd wait and buy those at a later time.

Also, the four preowned games for $20 deal ends on Sunday, 8/12, so I would hurry if you are interested.

I went back to GameStop today and bought the following used games with the four for $20:

The Girl and the Robot: Deluxe Edition - PS4
Wuppo: Special Edition - PS4
Wolfenstein: The New Order - PS3
Dead or Alive 5 - PS3

Obviously, two of these wouldn't be of interest to anyone in this thread. ;)

Wuppo was converted from new to used, so it has the soundtrack CD inside the case. :)

The Girl and The Robot is supposed to come with a soundtrack CD, but the person who traded it in didn't include it. :(

Anyway, Assault Suit Leynos and Earth's Dawn for PS4 will qualify as well if you can find them. Assault Suit Leynos is a 2D shooter with a mech robot, very fun. Earth's Dawn is a good game as well, sort of Odin's Sphere if it looked like Gears of War.

First I have heard of Wuppo, man.. Sodesco just churns out those obscure games.
I also picked up dead or alive 5 recently, tons of super cheap PS3 games now. Seems like just yesterday they were all near $60.
GameStop will probably shift back to their 4 for $10 soon on games $5 or less. Almost rules out all PS4 games to be included.. but who knows!

Wuppo is $5.99 on the current PSN flash sale if you don't care about physical copies...which would completely defeat the purpose of this thread.

Pretty happy to see Undertale coming to Switch with a physical. This is the type of game that is perfect for the Switch. I get to sell my PS4/Vita copies now!

If Nintendo had cooler boxes I might have started collecting Switch games.  But they make for the most boring spine collection ever.

According to the email I got Best Buy will also be carrying the standard edition version of Undertale for Switch. I will be holding out for that one so I can get it with my GCU discount.
What email was that? I was strongly considering getting a standard edition from Fangamer, but I'd quickly change to Best Buy if they're carrying it.

Well, out friends at Play-Asia and Eastasiasoft have a new NS title to announce soon, so let the speculations begin. LOL

It doesn't look like this company actually produces their own exclusive physical releases like Limited Run, Super Rare Games, etc.

Instead it looks like it buys exclusive titles from those companies, then resells them on their site.
Correct, but they usually get some additional trinkets that they add to the Gamefairy branded box that they package the games in. It's sort of like a limited edition rather than a truly exclusive version of the games they are selling.

Still looks like fun. Very Turrican. I just hope they don’t pull some preorder shenanigans by offering it up months before the release date. I hate when I have to lock in an order way in advance like with LRG.

The game coming out next week looks pretty decent. Already waffling on it due to budget constraints.
