The Indie/Limited/Obscure Physical Release Thread

Physical media may not be as popular as it was in years past, but that has not stopped it from finding success in more niche areas of the market. In fact, we're seeing so many physical releases, these days, that it has become difficult for even dedicated collectors to keep up with all of them. Many games, usually indie titles, are seeing releases with highly limited prints, regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity or are simply appearing with little notification. The purpose of this thread is to identify, catalogue, discuss and post deals for these releases, in hopes of making information more accessible and supporting the medium.

FAQ

Q: tl;dr

A: There are probably games that were released physically that you don't know about. Find them here.

Q: What is the "master list"?

A: The master list is a catalogue of all the games that have been identified here that meet certain criteria that differentiates them from standard, mainstream releases. It offers information regarding regional exclusivity, retailer exclusivity, print quantities and more.

Q: What are the criteria? How do you decide which games make the list?

A: For the most part, these will be "smaller" titles that were originally released as digital-only but have been given a physical release. Some exceptions may apply, like if an indie game launches with a physical release, it will likely be listed. Another exception would see a larger title that was only released digitally, for whatever reason, get a limited physical release (example: if Limited Run Games did a print of Fatal Frame V.)

Generally if a game is, as the title says, indie, limited or obscure and has a physical release, you'll see in on the "master list."

Also, the game must be region-free or NTSC-U and in English (subtitles are valid).

Q: Region free or NTSC-U? Doesn't that mean the list is only valid for North American users?

A: This means that every game on the list will be playable on North American consoles, though a few games may have versions that are region-locked on a certain console (this will be noted). Most games are now region free, so if you aren't from the NTSC-U region, it's very likely that the game will work for you. Knowledge of which systems do and don't have region-locking should allow anyone to make use of this list.

Q: What about games for collectors who aren't in the NTSC-U (North American) region or own consoles that can play region-locked games?

A: There may be a separate tab for you guys down the line. One step at a time.

Pre-Orders/Upcoming Releases

Notable Publishers/Distributors

iam8bit

A retailer, located in California, that sells all sorts of limited edition video game merchandise. They occasionally publish physical, indie titles for the PS4.

Limited Run Games

Based in California, Limited Run Games is generally accepted as the company that started the modern trend of releasing physical games in limited quantities. Currently, they publish several games a month but have stated they intend to ramp down. Their games come with collectible, trading cards and are sometimes offered alongside soundtracks, collector's editions and other related merchandise. The two heads of the company are very active on different forums and regularly engage with the community. They currently publish games for the PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch and occasionally the PC.

Play-Asia

Play-Asia is an established retailer located in Hong Kong. They are well known for offering a large variety of imported merchandise, including many games that have not seen western releases but have English subtitles. They've recently partnered with eastasiasoft to distribute exclusive and limited, physical releases. These games are often offered with collector's editions which are highly praised for their presentation, content and low prices.

Special Reserve Games

A company based in Texas, Special Reserve Games currently publishes games in limited quantities with no discernible schedule. Their games are frequently offered alongside collector's editions. They also collaborate with Limited Run Games to create variant covers for some of their titles, which are then sold via Limited Run Games' website. They currently publish for the PS4, PS Vita and PC.

Strictly Limited Games

Based in Germany, Strictly Limited Games seems to publish one title a month with varied but highly limited quantities. Collector's editions and soundtracks are sometimes offered alongside game releases. They've published games for the PS4 and PS Vita.

Super Rare Games

Located in London, these guys are relatively new to the limited game market. Similar to Limited Run Games, they include trading cards and stickers with their games. They publish only for the Nintendo Switch and intend to release one game a month.

Apparently Fangamer is doing a Slime Rancher CE.

https://www.fangamer.com/collections/slime-rancher

Though take note its one of those where the game is not in the CE.  In fact the game will likely ship much earlier.  Still, I'm tempted to get it.  Also, that Slimepedia is really tempting as well (not part of the CE but $21 if you order with the game).

Also of note the game is $29.99 on Amazon (no Prime discount) and not listed at Best Buy.  Fangamer is selling the physical copy for $29.00 so I may just order that plus the Slimepedia.

Rip Prime Discount. Seems like they stopped offering Post E3
Well, that's not true. I have preorders from late July where they added the discount like Apex Construct and Brawlout for the PS4. I've noticed none of the niche titles in my wishlist that they have added in the last few weeks have had the discount applied yet though.

Apex Construct and Brawlout doesn't show up for discount for me

Yep, they only offered the discount for a week or so. They've started doing that as well.
I would recommend everyone start just putting games on order once you know they are live on Amazon. Then you'll catch the discounts if and when they happen, and if they don't, you'll need to cancel before shipping. Or talk to CS right before hand, and see if they'll add it, and if not, then cancel.

Yeah, does this suck? Of course it does, but for those looking for pre-release discounts, options are now rather slim. I started doing this awhile ago for books, as I would always miss the deepest discounts, so now I just preorder everything day one, and sort it out after the fact. Sadly, just looking at my open orders, many recent items still don't have discounts, when in the past they would by now.

Them raising Prime's price, and then taking away most if not all proper discounts is a D**k move to say the least, but it's not like I ever held Amazon in some high moral regard. Their a business, that has pretty much driven most competition from the table, so now they can and will do as they please.

Prime discount is already gone entirely in some regions, it's just a matter of time till it's officially gone in the US

Did the physical Switch version of Voez have a limited print run (at launch anyway)?  A lot of places are sold out and while Gamestop seems to have it in stock for shipping online, only 4 stores within 100 miles of me have it in stock.

I think a lot of stock might be in limbo at Best Buy. My store got one copy but it's still sitting in the back because the distributor messed up the order and it can't be received in the system.

I preordered at Best Buy and my store said no stock was received in my region. Called support and they said they've never seen it this bad with stock... good thing I only have a couple more games coming from Best Buy then I'm done with them.

This and another post convinced me to get a copy. I had to pick up since Best Buy doesn't have it for shipping anymore.

Still hoping Musynx comes back in stock at Best Buy for $14.99, but since that was a clearance price, it seems unlikely. The price on Ebay is starting to go up, and it's OOS on Gamestop now.

I found out from some Best Buys in my area that Voez was not put out because they were never 'updated' as to what it's real release date was (it did change several times). So it was sitting in some weird pending area of the back that no one looks at, and they weren't going to put it out.

I received an email from aksys for this game, didn't have a clue as to what it was but it seems that it may be limited, not available online at BBY or Amazon, available to ship at Gamestop and some stores in my area at BBY.

I'm not sure what's going on with Best Buy stock on this - I've had it preordered since June and mine is backordered. The store did a search and said there are no stores with the game in stock. Oh well - saved me $60 (CE).

I think you may be looking at the PS4 option, were talking about the switch.

Any thoughts on which cover to choose for Stardust Galaxy? I don't like both so I'm really torn, I'm leaning more towards the black & red.

The red cover looks absolutely horrible, like someone sloshed red paint on to a piece of paper. The other cover is pretty bad too though, they really did a poor job on both.

I'm sure they will get more soon and it will go back into stock for shipping. This has happened with a lot of recent Switch titles recently - Dead Cells, Voez and Code of Princess were all sold out for a while but came back in sock.

I think they may be ordering less stock initially too, for these lesser known titles. I just went to preorder Blade Strangers and Victor Vran and both were sold out for shipping as of last night. Did a store pick up for those.

Also, not sure why your Switch order of the Little Dragon's Cafe CE is held up since I preordered in July and was sent one yesterday. Seems odd that they would send mine first but make you wait if you ordered earlier.

I'm more interested in the book than the game. I already have digital copies of the game on PS4 and Switch.

Edit-Looks like they will most likely be selling the book separate.

For what its worth the "Standard" edition comes in every box of the "Limited" edition as the LE includes both the standard case and a steelbook case. Looking at it that way the Standard edition is actually 4000 copies and the LE contents (steelbook, artbook, big box and other stuff) are actually 3000 copies. So that is probably why they named it the way they did lol.

Ordered my LE copy for $46.99 shipped. Really nice price for what is included, in my opinion.

I hope they wait to release this until they can put all the DLC on the cart/disc. Shovel Knight is one of my favorite games, and having a complete physical copy would be awesome.
Im licking my wounds from the vanilla version now. Guess I'll abort it and rebuy this one. Cool and frustrating at the same time.

im fine with the previous edition since that version gets all the DLC free as well
I should be fine with it in theory but I guess it's some kind of compulsion that bothers me to no end when I own a game that's not the "final" or "definitive" version. I don't even want it on my shelf knowing it's inferior even if that inferiority is literally limited to the box and disc art.

Looks like it's not even going to be released until April 2019 along with the Amiibo three pack.
