If you're up for Jail breaking it, then get XBMC. Simple as that. Do you have a home network set up? I use my apple tv to stream my .mkv's and .avi's on the HDD connected to my router, to play in the bedroom. For $99 I think it's a solid device, especially since in the past year I've really just gone all digital.
As for the macbook costs being more than a PC sure, but I don't like it when people look at it that way black & white. It's MORE than just the hardware specs IMO. It's the entire package, and for Apple that means customer service that you can WALK into a store and get shit done. For me, this has been invaluable. I don't EVER have to sit on the phone, I set an appt online and bam, go in and speak to someone face to face. Having owned a Dell and HP this is terrific. Plus MB's all have 2x better screens than those $500 machines mentioned, and a better wireless card. Not to mention OS X, you really do pay for some of that in the premium and apparently people are willing to pay that much to have OS X. Preferences though.
I built a desktop computer for gaming, thus need Windows 7, but for my mobile platforms, Apple all the way. Although I'm eyeing the Transformer Prime =) I just wish the WiFi issues weren't there. I stream a LOT using wifi and my bedroom being a little further away I want the best performance possible.
With ICS, a lot of the WiFi issue went away.
Sorry to post so much about it, I just can't recommend this tablet enough, lol.
