This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it reached 5,000+ posts making a new thread is easier to read through.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Apple iPhone & iPod Touch games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

App & Game Review Sites

Important Notes:

  1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iPod\iPhone. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
  2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
  3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
  4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
  5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
  6. Apps can be redownloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
  7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
  8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support site. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
  9. If you somehow break your iPhone or iPod Touch, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try these sites for do it yourself replacement parts & fixes.
iFixit Touch Repair Guide ; iFixit iPhone Repair Guide ; TechRestore
  10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks.

I played the free version of N.O.V.A a bit and liked it, so now I'm getting the paid for 99 cents. The in-app purchase was still $4.99, which sucks, as now I have to download it (now the paid version) again. Of course it isn't $4 worth of suck. :)

I think I like the control option that has the left side off the screen (anywhere) as the move control. That is, place your thumb down and then move it in the direction you want to go - the control pad is wherever you touched. That seems to work pretty well.
Other Gameloft 99 cent drops in this sale:
Two other drops to 99 cents I noticed (may or may not be part of the current sale, as they seem to have dropped a bit earlier):

Earthworm Jim
Chess Classics

I'm tempted to grab Chess Classics, but something I'm wondering . . . With the higher res display on the iPhone 4, are these companies going to up the visual quality of their iPhone apps, or will they rewrite their "HD" iPad versions to support the iPhone 4 display resolution as well? Even though it's only 99 cents, I'd hate to buy the iPhone version now only to find that I have to buy it again (i.e. Chess Classics HD) to get the higher quality visuals.

Edit: Oh, haha, nevermind -- I misread the price drop date on Chess Classics, it's been 99 cents for over a year now. :) Still wondering about the HD question, though.
I hope that's the case as I wouldn't want to have that many apps running in the background.
It's worth noting that how it handles these "background" apps is pretty slick. You always see the most recent 4 apps when you bring up the task bar, or whatever it's called, and 99% of the time that's what you want - you want to switch back to an app you were just, or recently, using. So it's automatic. You don't end up overwhelmed with apps in the task bar, because the one you want seems to always be right there. If not, you can swipe to the left to reveal more apps, in order of recent use. And if it's further back, you don't think about that either because you'll probably not even think to go to the task bar for it. You'll launch it the usual way and you'll still get the fast task switching. Pretty slick!

Man Ive nabbed alot of good games in the past like 2-3 days. Some really good ones too. I bought tilt to live (which is actually as fun as everyone made it out to be), Freaking inkies (the control kind of is off for me), streets of rage, NFS:underground, UNO, Castle of magic (one of the gameloft games i missed out on when it was free), bit pilot and assassins creed.

EDIT: and i succumbed to buying NOVA as well.. :D

I really wish SEGA would have dropped the Sonic iPhone games a bit more than just $3.99 ...seems weird that you can get them cheaper on XBLA tomorrow (and cheaper when both are at regular price).

Has anyone here played either Sonic game on iPhone that can attest to controls/features?

A lot of those gameloft games have free versions, so I'd give those a try if you're on the fence. I'd like to get N.O.V.A., but I noticed they offer an "upgraded" iPad version...

picked up sim city for 99 cents. gotta text my brother and rub it in his face, he paid $10. tempted on uno, but the reviews seem really bad.
tempted on uno, but the reviews seem really bad.
To be fair, despite the bad reviews at the top of the list, it still has an average of a four-star rating out of 8,691 ratings. People are more inclined to actually type out reviews when they're pissed than when they're happy. It looks like most of the bad reviews are due to network errors, so maybe it depends on whether you want to play online?

I dunno, I'm on the fence about it because I'm not sure how much I'd actually play it.
I'd like to get N.O.V.A., but I noticed they offer an "upgraded" iPad version...
Yup, that's exactly what I was thinking about with these . . . I'm not getting an iPad anytime soon (if ever, it's not a priority), but I am getting an iPhone 4 tomorrow. So if it turns out that they rewrite these "HD" iPad versions to be iPhone 4 compatible, I'm going to be irritated if I've just bought a bunch of the regular iPhone versions.

that XBLA is TODAY and today only.. just to let you know in case you dont want to miss it.

I have started downloading games even though I don't have an iPod or iPhone yet, I am waiting for the iPod touch 4 to come out, so I figure if I get the games now while they are cheap I won't have to pay more for them later. Since some free games are free only for a limited time it makes sense for me to download ahead of time. Even if the iPod touch 4 doesn't come out, which is really unlikely; the current line of iPod touch will likely receive price drops come september.

I went ahead and grabbed Assassin's Creed: Altair's Chronicles and have been playing it for a while. Its pretty decent. Nothing mind-blowing, but if you're a fan of the series, it's easily worth $1. I still have a little bit of trouble getting the hang of touch-based virtual analog sticks, but overall the controls work fairly well. For those who may not know, its a direct port of the Feb. 2008 DS game of the same name. There is a free demo version you may try first if you really aren't sure about dropping a buck on it.

Here is a review of the iPhone version from Slide to Play:

http://www.slidetoplay.com/story/assasins-creed-altairs-chronicles-review

They didn't rate it very high, but it was also $10 when they wrote the review. They mention encountering some glitches, bu tI haven't seen any yet (but I'm not that far into it yet either).

For more info, check out IGN's review of the DS game. Its really the same exact thing, but with touchscreen controls.

Just FYI, there's also an 'Assassin's Creed II: Discovery' in the app store, but its published by Ubisoft and is still $6. Like Altair's Chronicles, it is also a direct port of the DS game of the same name.

AC1 is sort of isometric and gives a bit of freedom of movement (and works fairly well) but for AC2 they went to more of a 2D side-scrolling setup, which some even described as feeling a little bit like a Sonic game.

just got Brothers in Arms & a heads up its freezing up alot idk if anyone else is having the issue but i cant get more than a min into it
since this is an ipod thread...anyone watched Dexter season 4? I watched 1 & 2 on netflix and bought season 3...loved the show so much, and anxiously awaiting seeing season 4, but it doesn't come to DVD release until september, but itunes has season 4 for sale for only $22, while the DVD release will likel;y be $35-40

is it worth it to have the season but a digital download?
I didn't see a reply to you yet so here ya go: If you are a Dexter fan then you will enjoy season 4 quite a bit. Our boy Dexter is growing and actually becoming a bit more human. It's great fun to watch, plus John Lithgow is simply awesome. There are a couple more too-coincidental-to-be-true things, but it all comes together in a very surprising season finale.

Now then DVD vs. Digital? IMHO it all depends on where you expect to be when you want to watch. If you're gonna be at home and the TV will liekly be free (no spouse or roommates) then DVD will give you a much better experience. There are a lot of little details in season 4 that I think would be lost on a iPhone/iPod. However, if you're never home (school, work, etc.) then go digital.

Unless microsoft effed up and posted it up early or informed us wrong, its on live today. check your xbox.. its there. i was on earlier this morning.

The odd thing is if you go to xbox.com, it still shows them at 400ms. They might have taken down the banner on live but it was up and they had the prices and sale going on. I havent checked since this morning.
Yeah....if you have a jailbroken 3G you can already do everything and more than iOS4 allows you to do.
Damn, I waited forever for 4, for nothing! :bomb: My 1st Gen Touch is now officially waiting for the Reaper to come knocking. Way to treat those who bought into your cult Apple. At least let us trade it in as a gesture of appreciation to take the sting out of being abandoned.

I'm already dead in the water as it is at 2.xx. Not even a free upgrade to 3.xx. Grrr.

I really don't think that the reason you can't install iOS 4 is because that's just what they want to do. The 1st gen touch is very slow, in comparison to newer models, has less memory, etc. In any case, you can Jailbreak. There's no harm in doing so seeing how you've got no worries about being axed by a future update, seeing how you can't install them! So jailbreak it and get some more value out of it, or buy a newer iPod touch.

I noticed today that iOS 4 seems to no longer offer to let you rate a game when you delete it. I always thought that was pretty stupid - make it easy for people who hate the game to rate it, while not making it any easier for people who do like the game to rate it (since obviously they aren't going to delete it!) Surefire way to drive star rating averages down for no reason. It does make you wonder why we can't rate games that we are staring right at on our iPhone. Maybe they should have a rate option when you press and hold on an app. Or something like that. In any case, given that it's not there, taking this goofy feature out certainly makes sense.

Is anyone else noticing a significant decrease in battery life with iOS 4? I charged my 3G fully last night, and did a hard reset. When I got up this morning, it was at 66%, and now it's all the way down at 43%, and I've barely used it. Before I updated, the battery drain would have barely even been noticeable by this point.

I'm also noticing that my system monitoring app is now reporting only 10.48mb free memory immediately after a hard reset, whereas it used to be in the 40-50mb range.

Anyone else seeing these issues? I'm wondering if they're specific to the 3G or if they're across all models.

NewToy has announced via their Facebook page that the paid, ad-free version of 'Words with Friends' will be 99 cents, Thursday only.

It is unclear whether the separate, iPad-only 'Words with Friends HD' will be included or not.

I still cant believe i got it already AND i preordered through ATT

Anyone know if the 'HD' version of apps will work with the iPhone 4? I read the resolution of the new screen (which looks fucking amazing btw) is almost as high a resolution as the iPad.

Nope, they won't. I've seen some existing iPhone apps that say that have been updated to support the higher-res screen, so I would assume that would be fairly common.

In theory, a single app can support all the resolutions, but some developers decided they could make more money off of charging extra for iPad-specific apps.

Nice, Mr. Malik!

Regarding battery life with iOS 4. I haven't noticed it being obviously worse on my 3GS. I'm hesitant to say it's not worse and I'm also hesitant to say that it's not better. It's too early to tell, but certainly it's neither obviously worse nor obviously better.
I still cant believe i got it already AND i preordered through ATT
Wow, nice. I ended up not being able to order one to be shipped because they insisted on shipping to the billing address on my AT&T account, and I'm not at home during the day to be able to receive it there. I just hope that the Apple Store does indeed have my "reserved" one waiting for me when I get there tomorrow evening. I'm somewhat skeptical about this, but no way do I want to deal with the launch day morning crowds.

I would say that for me, personally, my battery life has decreased about 10%. Usually, throughout the day, I get down to about 72% off of a full charge. Since the upgrade, I'm seeing it around 60% the past 2 days. This is on a 32GB 3GS.

i cant begin to explain how much better the screen looks in person! It is literally like tooking at a photo or nicely printed magazine or something.

Sorry to interrupt the drooling over that sweet iPhone 4 Malik is showing off... :D

I'm just bitter (still). The first gen was made obsolete as soon as 2 came out. You're right about jailbreaking though - nothing more to lose. Apple certainly isn't going to bother with a separate update just for the few remaining fossils out there. Oh well, time to save up for 5.

Back to ogling.

Also, they swapped the external speaker and the microphone so now when you hold the phone sideways to play a game (with the home button on the right) your hand doesnt cover the speaker anymore.

EDIT: another thing....i use the flashlight app a lot but now i dont need it since i can load up the camera (video part) and turn on the backlight at will. Good stuff!
shit, i just bought that
Me too. Oh well, with as much as I play it, I guess I can't begrudge them the extra dollar.

Had to lay down a couple bucks on N.O.V.A. and Gangstar. 99 cents is just too good to pass up. Add 2 more to the backlog...

yep! As soon as I saw it i checked the phone number on the invoice! My wife's gets here tomorrow

The screen while playing words with friends is crazy. It looks like an in store static display. Looks great at pretty much any angle. Still cant believe the way it looks

How does GT Racing compare to Real Racing? As good, better?

I picked up Need for Speed Undercover and it is sweet!! Looks great, funfactor is great! Thinking about getting the GT Racing for a buck as well. Any opinions?

Thanks in advance.

She is not home, so I am being a good husband and waiting for her to get home to let her have the enjoyment of opening it up, its driving me crazy just sitting there in the Fed Ex brown box. It keeps staring at me. :bouncy: ... ugh...

Does anyone know when the Gameloft sale ends?

And 107proof, I'm wondering the same thing about GT Racing but if no one answers I might just buy it and then I could tell you about it.
