This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it reached 5,000+ posts making a new thread is easier to read through.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Apple iPhone & iPod Touch games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

App & Game Review Sites

Important Notes:

  1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iPod\iPhone. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
  2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
  3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
  4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
  5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
  6. Apps can be redownloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
  7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
  8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support site. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
  9. If you somehow break your iPhone or iPod Touch, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try these sites for do it yourself replacement parts & fixes.
iFixit Touch Repair Guide ; iFixit iPhone Repair Guide ; TechRestore
  10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks.

Please don't bring phone wars to this thread. Feel free to post about the awesomeness of your Android phone in the Android thread. There's plenty of iPhone vs. Android battles going on on other forums and I'm sure they'd welcome your awesomeness incarnate posts there.

Another thing I've been wondering - what happens if you put an AT&T pre-paid sim card into a 3GS? If I upgrade to the 4, if my wife could use the 3GS as a pre-paid phone, even if no data, that would still be a massive improvement over the cheapphone. I guess I could just try it, eh? Will have to give it a shot tonight and see if it works.

You and I have different price points for "flaming pieces of shit." ;)
I did say I had to pay $18. You mean I'm not eligible for the $199/$299 price. If so, :( And why wouldn't AT&T want us to commit to another 2 years anyway?

Maybe I misunderstood you, did you mean your contract expires in July 2011, or July of this year?

This is the message I get but it's because I obviously expire in '11.

"As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price, along with a 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. Please proceed with the online upgrade process for pricing details. You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 02/22/2011"

Anyone know what the "higher price" is? I really want to upgrade but I may just wait until next year if I can't get a decent deal. After all, with a 3GS running the updated OS, it's not like there are severe difference I'll be missing out on right? I mean, the new screen, better camera, better battery life and HD video recording are all great but not necessities it would seem.

no point in being a total prick about it, ass. I wasn't saying droids are better than iphones. I was simply stating that the EVO looks to be really good and I wonder if Apple is trying to out market it. Personally, I'd prefer an iphone myself but I didn't want to spend a lot of money on my new phone. So please stop insinuating that I'm 'spitting' on iphones. That's what pisses me off. I simply posted my comment to carry on casual conversation, and suddenly it becomes a debate starter...seriously, people need to chill

400/500 for the 16gb/32gb respectively.

And yes, you should be fine with a 3Gs. Just imagine what the next iPhone will be like next year ;)

A lot of people are spreading the wrong info.

The no commitment price is $600 and $700 for the 16 and 32 gig models while the early upgrade price is $400/$500.

If you are already a customer with the unlimited data plan you can keep it.

EDIT: Also, when I checked for upgrade eligibility my text said this:

"As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and waive the $18 upgrade fee."

did anyone else get that text?

O RLY?

http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/02/atandt-users-can-keep-30-unlimited-data-when-upgrading-phones/

folks on the current $30 smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan when upgrading hardware

http://www.facebook.com/ATT?v=wall#!/ATT?v=app_10442206389

So here's the deal: if you are a current smartphone customer you're not required to switch to one of the new plans.

You CAN keep your unlimited data plan. The only way you cant keep it is if you want to add tethering.

So...

1. You CAN keep your unlimited data plan if you already have it
2. You cannot have the unlimited plan and tethering together
3. Don't spew the wrong information
4. Watch your mouth, boy

I did mean that my contract ends July 2011 yet I did get the message saying I was eligible for an upgrade with a new 2 year commitment and the $18 fee.

Engadget posted that this message means I'm eligible for the fully discounted price, but I'll find out for sure when the pre-orders go up.

They better let us pre-order at an ATT store. Has there been any update on this?

EDIT: Nevermind...you can...i swore i read yesterday you could only currently preorder online

Ok, I'll take your word for it. Here's the answer to your question as to whether Apple will try to "out market it": Yes.

Thanks for the conversation!

Great news about being able to keep our unlimited data plans. I may end up dropping to 2 GB anyway to save $5 a month, but not until I see what kind of data usage I'm making with Netflix in hand.

The Navigon Regional apps are currently $15 (50% off) for WWDC. The regions are pretty large, I might bite. I've been waiting for one of the major gps apps to go sub-$20

ArmorGames' own SHIFT is the free app with FreeAppADay today. This app is a great puzzle app. It's a really simple yet odd mechanic that is fun the entire game. Just try out the first few levels, it's probably my second favorite puzzle game on the App Store (Right up there next to minim).

I was surprised by how high the production value of Carcassonne is, I definitely recommend it if you're interested in the upcoming iPad version since that will raise the price to $9.99. The game provides the classic version with online play or vs CPU players plus a solitaire version. It also features a great tutorial mode that is fully narrated and actually reminded me of Little Big Planet a bit.

I would definitely rank the game in the same quality area as Plants vs. Zombies ... not quite as elaborate or creative, but worth a look, as it seems like the type of game you can easily come back to from time to time and the online vs. mode seems like a good way to get your money's worth.

My only problem with it, and tom-tom and the like, is the huge amount of space they take up, even with the regional ones. It's over 1 GB for the East Coast. On the other hand the ones that are based entirely on live maps have the obvious downside that if you don't have a data connection you can't make a new routes (they do cache your current route). My current navigation app of choice is CoPilot, which lets me download individual states. What's the point of having the entire east coast taking up space on your iPhone if you aren't planning to leave your home state any time soon? When you are going to go out of state, then you can download those state's maps as needed, and remove them again when the trip is over. Having said that, CoPilot isn't as full featured as Navigon. It does have text-to-speech and it works great, but it doesn't have lane guidance and such. Also the traffic feature in CoPilot is absolutely worthless. I tried it for a month and it was just an annoyance, never once providing anything close to what was really happening on the roads. I suspect, though, that they are all like that. It's not like traffic on the radio was ever of any use either.

And, having said all that, I'm still considering trying Navigon at that price. It is damn cheap. I just hate the idea of having to clear out space for it.
Q*Bert Deluxe now on sale for .99

http://appshopper.com/games/qbert-deluxe
Q*Bert Deluxe is decent, though I'm not really a fan of the "Deluxe" portion of the game. I like the classic part, though admittedly I haven't ended up playing either that much. If it had OpenFeint for leaderboards and achievements I think it would be more compelling.

Now this is funny - in the description it says that they have big plans for the game (but I think they've said that since it was released, which was quite some time ago) and that they have a blog at qbert.com. So I try to go there and I'm getting a message that the site is restricted (here at work) for pornography. So is that wrong, or did they sell the name to a porn site?

I haven't seen anyone talking about 180. It's free today and is an awesome puzzle game. Give it a go.

Guys I got a Q. A person I know is selling his iPhone 3GS for $100 due to the new one coming out. Anyhow if I were to buy it from him, could I use it solely as an Ipod Touch?(Listening to music and gaming device only, not using phone stuff at all) or would I need to get a phone contract to access those features or is it not possible to do that? Or not worth it?

Only reason I ask because I dont want to spend $260 right now for an Itouch 3G.

You can use an iPhone as just a Touch.

I've been doing this for the past week+ after I cancelled my iPhone 3G contract with AT&T.

I have heard that you can but it has to be jailbroken to work or it will eventually shut down because it doesn't have service. This is only what I have heard though.

booo!!!!!!

manthing, how long have you had yours like that?(without service) I could probably jailbreak the Iphone and use it as a Ipod Touch.

Like I said, the iPhone is a 3GS and 16GB. Almost mint condition and he told me to sell to anyone for $100. But now im thinking of just buying it from him and using it as an Itouch but from what Guru posted...looks like I would have to jail break it. Is that hard BTW? and what do you guys advice me to do?

I'm pretty sure that's 100% false ... are you talking all iPhones or just 3G iphones because I can confirm that an original iPhone works just like a touch once its contract has been canceled or you upgrade to a newer model.

I'm not really sure how an electronic device could initially work when the contract was canceled but degrade over time due to a lack of service to the point where it won't work? It should either work or not work ... and in my experience they tend to work just fine and actually I think you can even still dial 911 ... so your old, non-contract iphone can be an emergency device too ;)

Hmm, thanx for the advice guys and sorry to derail this thread! I know people here appreciate the good deals and hate offtopic chatter. Anyhow not sure what to do now, i mean if an iPhone 3GS/16GB can work without a contract as an Ipod for Music and games,(does wifi work on an iPhone w/no phone service at all? Web browser is awesome too w/wifi+ camera), ill gladly buy it off @ $100.

Yeah, $100 is a good price as long as there isn't anything wrong with the iphone. Wifi should work just fine and you can always re-activate it in the future if you want to use it as a phone. It would probably make sense to jailbreak it, since you don't have to worry about the jailbreak screwing up your phone service and jailbreaking is rather easy from everything I've heard. Google Spirit and that should be fast and easy.
