iPhone, iPad & iOS Discussion -- White iPhone on Sale 4/28

For those planning on ordering online, online sales start at 12:01am PST on the 11th (Thursday night).

http://www.9to5mac.com/54714/ipad-2-online-sales-to-begin-at-march-10th-at-midnight-pt/

I'll probably just order online (unless I change my mind on getting one between now and then) as my department is having some big name guest speakers on Campus Friday at 3:30 so I couldn't line up.

Though I may just try to head over afterward as my girlfriend got her iPad locally on launch day hours after the people who lined up got theirs. I could probably get to the Apple store by 6 or so. Part of what helps here is we have 4 or 5 apple stores in the metro area so that spreads the crowds out some.

I wanted some peoples opinions on getting a ipad 1 16gb wifi for solely internet browsing. I don't envision using it for much more than browsing the web. Really, I find that booting up my 4-year old laptop is a hassle (battery life, weight, boot-up time, etc.). Is this a worthwhile purchase for $400 on ebay? Does it give you a quality web viewing experience compared to a laptop pc?

Also, is AtomicBrowser the way to go on an ipad?

Thanks for any advice!

I think it's a fantastic web browsing device, for all but forums as you really need a keyboard for that.

But I find it much more comfortable than a laptop for browsing the web on the couch or in bed etc. Especially for things like reading magazine and newspaper sites. It's great to be able to zoom in on the text column, thus cropping the adds on the sides etc. The easy scrolling and zooming is great for web browsing/reading. Only downside is it doesn't support Flash, not an issue for me as I don't frequent any Flash based sites currently, but something to consider if you do.

Also, I'm sure you'd end up doing more than browse the web on it as there are so many cool apps for things like newspapers, magazines, comics, games, e-books etc.

Lastly, if you don't need/want the camera's, I'd just get a first gen 16gb like you're thinking. However, you can get those for $399 new everywhere currently or $349 refurbished from Apple currently as they clear out stock for the new one. No reason to buy one for $400 on ebay when it's the same new in stores!

As for Atomic Browse, it's ok, some pages don't display properly, but most do. Safari over all is a bit better other than lacking tabbed browsing.

So now you're paying $50 difference to make sure the only children's fingers that touched your iPad were those of the Chinese laborers who manufacture them.
Well - actually - they install completely new outer casings on on the refurbs ;) They say "new battery and outer shell" I don't know whether that's just the back of the device or the front and back or what...

I would def. like to see an app (non-game) specific thread - the game deal thread in the video game deals section is great but doesn't really delve too much into non-game deals or discussions.

I wouldn't buy a first gen iPad right now, unless you get one of the refurbs from Apple's site. Come next week all the people selling theirs for $400 and up will start dropping their prices, just wait.

I think I'm going to get a 32 Gb Wifi only iPad 2. I have a friend that works for Apple and can get a discount, but she said she has to wait until after the first shipment, which could be a few months. Don't know if I want to wait that long though...

Thanks guys. I'm in no rush, so I will hold off a couple more weeks. I have a 10% off coupon for electronics on ebay, so I was hoping to use that before the end of the month. Now I just have to borrow my sister's ipad for a weekend to see if my wife likes using it or not. I may have to get her a bluetooth keyboard so she can write emails in peace. She hates touchscreens, but hopefully she'll hate the current laptop more. Have a great day!

Nice summary of everything you need to know about the ipad to Launch. Nothing new, but nice article with all the info in one place.

I've definitely decided to get a black, 32gb wifi iPad 2! I'm about 95% decided on just ordering online Thursday night or Friday Morning and not bothering looking for one locally since I couldn't get to any store before 6pm or so on Friday.

I'm gonna hold off on buying the iPad 2. My gf gave me the first one for our anniversary last year; I'm actually saving up for a ring for her later this year ;).

Anyhow, a page back or so, some CAGswere talking about a video game scanning app and I highly recommend icollect video games pro, it's a paid app but I find it's useful.

I'm in the same boat. Unsure of color yet, but that's the least of my concerns. Even though I already acknowledged I'm one of "those" Apple people, I desperately loathe being around people who want to talk about how much they love a company and gush over their products. So I'll be ordering online, too. Ain't got time to stand in line anyway.

Yeah, I hate the Apple store crowd too (though I'm not one of those Apple people).

I'd love to have it to play with over the weekend, but we have a great guest speaker panel on Friday at 3:30 I don't want to miss so I couldn't line up even if I wanted to and had time for it.

Now I'm hedging my bets, as I'm going to a mall on Saturday morning to help the wife do some shopping for spring work clothes. Should I grab one on Saturday morning, or are they likely to be sold out? I've never bought an apple product at launch, so I have no knowledge how this stuff works.

They won't be available till 5pm. I'm not sure if they are taking pre orders for them or if it's first come first serve. You may want to call your store about it.

I'm considering the idea of taking some time off on Friday and going to buy one. So they aren't starting the sales on Friday until 5 PM? If correct, that helps. I'm wondering how early I should get there in order to get my choice of model. I'm actually considering going all out and getting the 64 GB 3G model. Might back off to the 32 GB, but I'm pretty decided on getting the 3G now that I'm back to commuting on the train/bus.

Edit: then again:

If you have a color/size preference, order online. Waiting in line for a few hours only to find out that the model you want is out of stock is no fun. If you want a specific color/capacity, reduce your stress level and order online.

I guess I should just order online so I get my choice. I might go, not early, and just check it out in person as they'll have them on display even if sold out, so I can see the colors and then decide on that, and order online after.

My girlfriend got hers later in the day in the iPad 1 launch. 5 or 6 hours after they opened and started selling them.

Of course, it was a new gadget then and is now a hot item so they may go faster this time. But on the other hand a lot of people with iPad 1's seem to be sticking with them per people on forums and people I know with iPads.

Doesn't hurt to check on Saturday morning. I'd guess there will probably be some left at least of the more expensive models. The 16GB models go fastest from what I heard about the iPad 1 launch.

I just don't have the time or energy to hassle with it so I'm just going to order online and not worry about it. I really should spend the weekend catching up on work (have gotten way behind after having Sinus surgery the end of Feb.) rather than playing with a new toy anyway! :D

64GB 3G is the most expensive, so I'd think that would be the easiest one to get unless they get a tiny amount of stock of that model.

FYI, iOS 4.3 is out according to Engadget. If you're jailbroken you won't want to update to it, though. I can't remember if it breaks the jailbreak or breaks the untether. I need to look that up.

Currently it is *not* out for the Verizon iPhone 4. Don't know why for sure, but presumably needs some tweaks for CDMA. It supports 3rd and 4th gen touch, iPad, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.

So what are those of you buying an iPad 2 thinking of case/cover wise?

I'm definitely getting a smart cover, just a plastic one, leather are absurdly priced. Trying to decide between the silver/grey, green and blue.

Also just bought a cheap ($12.99) 10.2" black neoprene netbook sleeve at Target that I'll use to keep it safer when chucking it in the briefcase/back pack.

Same as you, a smart cover, plastic. I'd like to get a leather one but not at that price!

I may just go to Best Buy and get one, avoiding the Apple store which may be mobbed, and using some GC's I have saved up. Sounds pretty good all-around.

I wish there were some darker color options with the plastic covers. I'd like black or dark brown, but that's only available in leather. At least in pictures, I don't care for the lighter colors. Maybe they look better in person? I hope so, because like everybody else, I can't justify the leather price tag.

My wife was going to get me an ipad for my birthday a couple of weeks ago, but she didn't know if an update was coming or which version I wanted so she ended up getting me a gift card instead. I'm glad she did because a few days later they announced the iPad 2.

Anyway, I'll be leaving work at 4pm tomorrow to stand in line to pick up a 32gb Wifi only iPad in black. The only reason I'm picking it up in store is to save on tax.

As for a cover, I picked up a cheap $5 iPad neoprene case at Five Below. The magnetic cover is cool, but $40?!

I'm not getting up at 4AM.

Thankfully, Apple doesn't have the same insidious history of Nintendo, Sony, and MS in fabricating manufacturing shortages to spark consumer interest. I suspect I'll be able to waltz in on Saturday AM and grab a 32GB iPad 2.

Well, I'm going to bloody try, at any rate.

You have more faith than me! I'm setting my alarm for 4am, ordering and going back to sleep! :D

Plus I just generally hate the Apple store scene, and would rather avoid that and the other option of diving around to Best Buys and Targets trying to find one Friday night/Saturday morning.

Best of luck to you in nabbing one though! :D

I'd be surprised if they sell out. Most of the components are the same as the first model, so there shouldn't be any shortages unless, say, Apple didn't manufacture enough A5 processors for example.

I doubt it will sell out totally as well. But it could be tricky finding specific models (16GB wifi will go fastest) and colors etc. in certain areas. Also the international launch is only two weeks later this time, so that may cut down on the amount of stock here--as well as having stock spread across more stores on launch day rather than they did at the iPad 1 launch (which I think was only Apple and Best Buy having them).

If I didn't have a work meeting at 3:30 Friday I probably would have just headed to an Apple store around 3 and waited a couple hours. But I have the meeting so it would be a matter of fighting Friday rush hour traffic to drive across the city and get there at 6-6:30 or try my luck Saturday morning. My guess is that would still net me the model I want, but I'd rather not hassle with it.
Holy crap. 4 AM. I guess I wouldn't be getting in one of the first orders even if I did go that route. :)
You can always do what I'm doing and just set an alarm, order and go back to sleep! :D

I am getting really paranoid about this whole stupid iPad 2 crap. I could order online, but if I am going to be stuck paying tax... I'd much rather get it on day one. But, I will never wait in line for hours and hours for anything and still can't figure out just how high the demand will be at my local Best Buy if I arrive at 4:30, which is when they start giving out the tickets or whatever their stupid system is...

EDIT: It is up for sale on apple.com now... decided not to buy it that way.

Order placed. Going back to sleep.

Hope it comes faster than the March 18-25 delivery estimate, but if not oh well. Still beats hassling with lines and checking around to find it locally.

Stuck with black 32 GB wifi model and went with a blue Smart Cover---that's listed to ship faster and come on the 15-18.

I think I'm going to take a few hours off and head to the Apple store and see if they have any 64 GB AT&T models, probably black, but depends on how the white looks in person. If not, at least I can see it in person and then order my color of choice online. I also want to see the smart covers in person. I can't decide on a color going on how they look on the web.
i already have ipad. i'll wait for another $100 pricedrop on ipad 2 somewhere in this fall.
Apple doesn't really drop prices until the new model is days from coming out.
So Best Buy isn't selling the new iPad until 5 pm. Lame!
No where is. That was Apple's rule. 5 pm sale time at the Apple store and everywhere else. They want the lines for the free publicity.

My smart cover has shipped already. iPad still listed as shipping in 3-5 business days and arriving on the 18th to 25th. Kind of silly for them not hold the case to ship when the iPad is available.

Definitely glad I'm not hassling with the lines or checking after work. There are line threads on the forums at Macrumors. My closest Apple store was over 100 in line already by noon.

iPad Cydia app/source recommendations?
I'd like to know too. I jailbroke my iPad finally and there are some pretty cool features but it is all stuff I just wish Apple would include in their OS for free (no limit on folders, folders within folders, scrolling dock, retina display, etc.). There are a lot of apps but I don't know where to begin and they add up after a while.
Is 4.3 jailbroken, other than an alpha build?
I don't know but I expect it will be in the next couple of weeks.

It doesn't look like I'm going to be able to head out early today, so I'll go back to my plan of checking it out on Saturday and then ordering online (unless by some seemingly impossibility, they have any/what I want in stock).

As far as Cydia/jailbreak, some of those hacks are really appealing sounding, but in practice they may not be so great. For example, Folder Enhancer is very cool, but I found that when I actually used it, putting lots of stuff in one folder, especially if with subfolders, the display of folders slowed down, enough to be annoying to me.

My iPhone 4 is jailbroken, but all I have on it now is MyWi, My3G, ScreenDimmer and a few apps that aren't hacks and I'm pretty much going to keep it that way. And even good ones sometimes you have to debug. ScreenDimmer has a feature where it can wake your iPhone up when you move it. Sounds cool, but not so cool once you're moving in a car or whatever - the accelerometer sees you moving and so A) your iphone never sleeps and B) it slows to a crawl because ScreenDimmer is constantly reacting to the motion, or at least I think that's what's causing the problem. In any case, turning off that feature definitely solves it.

FYI, if you're going to install hacks via Cydia I would highly recommend you take notes about what each hack installs along with itself, because while Cydia makes it very easy to get everything you need to be able to use a hack, it is pretty much impossible afterward to figure out what a hack used, and thus it's pretty much impossible to fully remove a hack without doing a restore. Not fun. Sometimes the cause of the problem proves to be something that got installed along with the hack, not the specific hack itself. So set your user mode to dev so that you can later remove bits and pieces, take notes about what gets installed along with a hack, and then if you ever need to remove it you'll know what else to remove too.

With those thoughts in mind, a jailbreak can be worthwhile. MyWi and My3G alone are pretty much worth it (for an iPhone). EDIT: but there's pretty much nothing I can think of, given my experiences, that I'd want to have on iPad, so I don't plan to jailbreak mine.

As far as I know, there is a 4.3 jailbreak, but it's not public yet. Not been complete for consumer use. But give it time, jailbreaks seem to happen sooner each iteration.
