iPhone, iPad & iOS Discussion -- White iPhone on Sale 4/28

Alright, so how do I access this jailbreakme.com site from an iphone if I don't have a data plan? Do I have to find someone with ATT account with data plan and use his/hers sim card?

Just jailbroke my phone and I'm not really sure what I can do now. Sorry to sound so clueless but can anyone tell me some cool shit I can do now?

I can't jailbreak my iPhone - ever. My firm just sent around an email saying that if an iPhone is jailbroken it will no longer connect to our exchange server for email. They cited "security reasons". Sucks.

ill probably wait to jailbreak until after the 4.1 update. i wouldnt mind having a 5 icon dock again, and maybe tweaking some of the settings with multitasking.

the phone doesnt know its jailbroken. There is no way it wouldnt connect. They are telling you not to do it because they are pussies and are scared of losing the warranty

They will patch the jailbreak in that update.

Pretty much. There is no way that they would be able to tell you jail broke it, you can always just restore it and no one will ever know the difference.

I need to learn about the pwnage tool.

I've tried out by Mi3G and MiWi and they are both pretty awesome. They are especially relevant to me right now because our home DSL modem/wifi is out of commission until I can get a replacement. I used the Mi3G to download App updates as I slept, that wouldn't have been allowed otherwise. Nifty! FYI, Mi 3G and MiWi are pay apps. They aren't free. However, I can see that they may well be worth it.

Also note that MiWi seems to create something other then a normal wifi access point. I couldn't see it from my DSi, however I was able to connect to it by manually entering the WiFi name and password. When I look for it on our Macs what I see is that it appears to be mimicking a Mac that has created a local WiFi network. It doesn't show up as a normal WiFi network, though on the Mac it does show up. I'm not sure if Windows sees it or not, but you should be able to manually enter he name and password as I did with the DSi. That might be just as well anyway, especially if you're going to run it without a password (though Mac users could see it). Also, there's no way to enter a alphabetic password, only hex. I wish it let me enter alphabetic. Oh well.

EDIT: The current 4.0.1 jailbreak is so easy that I can't imagine why you would wait for it to, likely, be more difficult once 4.1 is out. I doubt it's going to be as simple as going to website and sliding a slider on the page. The PDF exploit will be patched for sure.

that program works awesome.

but, is there a version that doesn't use rockme? i see the older version that doesn't need it. seems kinda stupid for me to have rockme for one program.

MyWi is great. With our internet out at home, last night I got some work done using it with my MacBook. I'm a little worried about being smacked with the tethering fee, and more importantly, having my unlimited data plan taken away. However, and in spite of what I just said, I'm considering the idea of paying for the tethering option and going with the 2GB plan, but using MiWi. Is there any reason to believe that you can't use MiWi? I.e. that you'd have to use the official tethering (via USB) option? The tethering is $15, but the 2 GB plan is $5 cheaper, so it's really $10 per month for tethering, at least as long as I stay under 2 GB of data.

Also I used Mi 3G again last night to get more app updates. Great stuff!

On the other hand I have had some weirdness ever since jailbreaking. For example, last night my mute switch stopped having an effect. I could switch it on and the icon would display and it would vibrate, but everything kept putting out sound. I had to reboot to fix it. I've also had the icons in the status bar end up messed up temporarily on occasion, though that's not a big deal, unless it's indicative of a greater problem.

Lastly, I think we need a jailbreak thread now that it's officially legal. Cheapy wouldn't have an issue with that, would he? I feel like we are flooding this thread with jailbreak stuff, which isn't necessarily iPhone 4 related.

I don't think so. To tell the truth, I think I like the RockApp more then Cydia. Cydia is dog slow. RockApp is quick(er - maybe?) and it shows available udpates via a badge on its icon. Unfortunately not everything can be installed with RockApp. I don't know why.

Incidentally, what is with those creepy blank icon "apps" called "iPodOut", "TrustMe", "WebSheet", "AdSheet" and "DemoApp"? Why do I end up with those sometimes? They're on my springboard now. I think last time they showed up I rebooted and they went away, but the "TrustMe" one is especially creepy. I presume these are just part of the whole jailbreak inner workings, but I want to be sure....

I decided to purchase Screen Dimmer. I wish there had been a trial, but I'm happy with the purchase in any case (in case it isn't obvious, this is a pay app only available if you jailbreak). It adds settable screen dimming, which is great and you have to wonder why it isn't there in the first place. It is properly done such that if the screen is dimmed, your first tap doesn't register as a tap on any buttons, it just wakes the screen up. It can also be set to shut off the backlight after a period of time (a period of time after the screen is first dimmed). This will save battery without requiring you to lock your phone. Also lets you set it to not lock while charging (such as in my car), which I like a lot. There's other options as well. Anyway, it's worth the $2 and is my first jailbreak app purchase.

Why would you pay for tethering and then pay for mywi?

Don't go over 5gb of data and you should be ok. Also don't download movies over 3G or anything like that and you should be fine. The only reason to use mywi while paying for tethering is it's wireless feature. 20 days after I got my iPhone 4 I already had 2.2gb of data usage.

Also, for those that care, you can turn off the Apple killswitch in sbsettings > more > system options.

Well, I'm about to restore and I'm not sure I'll jailbreak again. I've been fighting what appears to be a trashed google maps and it appears to be attributable to jailbreaking or something I installed. I. Any cas I removed everything and then google maps froze again and then I ended up in "safe mode", which apparently disables jailbreak stuff and guess what? Google maps was fine! Until I revolted out of safe mode. I need google maps. That's a lot more important to me then these hacks. I really wish I didn't have to restore to get rid of the jailbreak. :(

See you on the other side....

fuck. And no I'm not, because the Internet is down at home and I can't restore without it contacting the iPhone software update server.

Does anyone know how I can getbGoogle maps working again? Does anyone else have problems with it? Everytime I try to do things like change the map type, place a pin, etc, it freezes. :(

Also my email just crashed though I'm not sure it is the same issue. It is suspicious, though.

you installed something the phone doesnt like/isnt compatible with 4.x. It isnt the jailbreak's fault. It's yours. Figure out what you did and fix it.
that program works awesome.

rock.app is a business. It uses licenses and logins to verify you have a legit copy of their software. Just use sbsettings to hide the rock.app icon.

I did just figure it out and it's the fault of MiFi and Mi3G, or rather it seems to have been "MobileSubstrate", which is installed with those. I didn't remove it before because I thought it was part of the standard jailbreak. I had actually reinstalled MiWi and Mi3G, since I was stuck for now, but on a whim decided to try removing MobileSubstrate, and it said it would also remove those two hacks. I went through with it, revolted, and finally Google Maps is back to normal. I'm sure ad I didn't buy either of those hacks. Looks like I won't be using them any time soon either. :( But glad that maybe I don't have to restore.

It's probably also worth noting that I installed a
mobileSubstrate update that the Rock App offered up and it's possible that was my mistake.

Of course nothing like this would ever happen without hacks. I.e. In the safety of the limited App Store.

Ok, it is *definitely* Mobile Substrate. I reinstalled Screen Dimmer and freaked when I saw it saying it was also installing MS (and Preference Loader or something like that). Sure enough, after the reboot Google Maps was fucked again. To make matters worse, MS doesn't seem to show up in Cydia, so you can't uninstall it there. You have to use Rock App. So I uninstaller it again (also removing Screen Dimmer) and after the reboot... yep, Google Maps was working great again!

Hopefully they can fix the problem as I would like those hacks. In the mean time I'm not sure what the jailbreak is going to do for me. I guess I'll just get to stare at the Cydia icon.

Is there a way to see what is going to be installed before OKing the install?
Funny how it keeps putting "revolted" when I try to type "rebooted". :) I even had to stop it this time too. :)
thats because rebooted isn't a word.
why don't you just say reboot, as its shorter. its like people saying "anyways".

Here's another then. ;^) Except in this case it's note that, what do you know, there's another new version of Mobile Substrate today, and low and behold, the Google Maps problem is gone. Woohoo!

So it was definitely mobile substrate. Mobile substrate is used by all the hacks, so if you installed any of them, and it was your first such install, in the last few days you would have had this same issue. Also if you, I suppose foolishly, updated your copy of Mobile Substrate. I guess that's a fuck up? Serves me right for thinking an update would improve things. Oh well.

Also, "rebooted" may not be a word, but I fail to see how this is better: "Yesterday I reboot the computer". ??? :)

EDIT: I've now reinstalled MiWi, Mi3G and Screen Dimmer, as well as SBSettings and some other things I had. Google Maps continues to work fine, however I did get a crash into safe mode after I reinstalled OpenSSH and then tried to connect to a local wireless network I created on my Mac, so I could SSH into it. So far it's been fine after restarting again, though.

3G Unrestrictor works WAAAAAAAAY better than My3G. My3G cuts out facetime about a minute into every call. 3G Unrestrictor works like a charm on longer calls. I highly recommend if you are looking for a cydia app to unrestrict 3G access to facetime and/or the appstore use 3G Unrestrictor.

My3G has worked great for me, but for downloading apps and app updates that I wouldn't have been able to get otherwise. I decided to buy it today. I think I've gotten my value out if already. I haven't tried it with Facetime, though - I don't have anyone to try it with!

I'm also getting my value out of MyWi, so I decided to buy that too (sure am glad to have a fixed Mobile Substrate). In fact tonight we were using it with two Macs at the same time, and right now with our Mac mini and my old 3GS - my son is watching Bakugan videos on youtube with the 3GS while I do this. Pretty darned impressive, and it's actually quite fast. I have been using it without WEP security to make it faster. I tried it with WEP last night and it did seem slower (though still usable.) I figure with it only being an intermittently on access point I can get away without using security. Maybe I'll try 48 bit, though, to see if that's a good compromise. I'm not sure I want to try gaming on the Xbox over it, though. :)

FYI, Saurek posted this on Twitter: "As many users discovered, the Skype redux fix broke Maps. I spent most of the day fixing this bug in MobileSubstrate 0.9.3228. @kevinrose ;P"

I'm glad he got that fixed quickly!

I have a dilemma, I need a new phone and my xbox is on its last legs. Dunno whether to get an iphone4 or the Halo Reach Edition Xbox360S....

buy the arcade and use your old hard drive. Take the rest of the money and get a phone

I concur with Malik on that one, though note that the new design Xbox Arcade does not support the older style drives, at least not as far as I know. They certainly don't attach to it anyway.

Also, I think it's pretty awesome that MyWi continues to work even while you sync your iPhone. I was able to plug in this way since I was running low on power and had no interruption at all. Not sure about the USB connection, but the WiFi hotspot continues to work, and well. Really a fantastic hack, and absolutely worth the asking price.

EDIT: I also think it's interesting the Texas Poker (I think that's the name) is available both from the AppStore and from Cydia/RockApp. I guess Cydia/RockApp offer more timely updates, but otherwise you don't need to jailbreak for this app.

What currently have installed and what it does:

Activator - actives apps via custom gestures, buttons, etc

biteSMS - texting with many more options including quick text from the lockscreen or over top of any application

CyDelete - Allows you to delete a cydia app (ones that have an icon) just without having to go into cydia (deletes just like an app store app)

Cyntact - displays contact pic in contact list

Fake Carrier - custom text for carrier name and status bar time

Five Icon Dock - allows 5 icons in the dock

Illumine - theme

Infinifolders - unlimited icons in a folder

Music Controls - controls for backgrounded music, dislays info & album artwork on lockscreen & multitask menu

MyWi - wireless & usb tether

OpenSSH - allows pc access into the phone's folders

SBSettings - quick access to toggle on/off options. hide icons, & a lot of other shit

Winterboard - custom themes, sounds, etc for the phone

3G Unrestrictor - allows the phone access to thing that otherwise need WiFi (appstore items larger than 20mb, facetime, etc)

I was suprised to find that I could actually play an online game of Snoopy Flying Ace (XBLA) connecting to XBL through my iPhone 4's 3G connection (with MyWi)! I don't know if others saw any issues in the game, but for me it was smooth as butter. I even got some kills (Snoopy Flying Ace is an awesome game, by the way.) I was mainly just wanting to try it out, but when it worked great I saw the game to completion. Probably won't do it again, especially since our home internet should be back up by Monday evening at the latest.

As far as what I have installed via Jailbreak on my iPhone 4:

My3G - paid - like 3G Unrestrictor, and has worked well for me but I haven't tried Facetime with it. I think 3G Unrestrictor is free, so that's something to consider. I like how My3G works, but I haven't tried 3G Unrestrictor so I can't compare.

AppBackup - free - lets you backup and restore the save files from AppStore apps. These saves are on device, so it's not really so much for backing up to safeguard against a device failure, but for things like backing up before deleting an app, which deletes its data, and then being able to restore that data later on when you reinstall it. So far I've only backed up, not restored, but so far so good. I'm going test out restoring soon. Could also be useful for saving a state and then being able to revert back to it in a game. Not sure.

Texas Poker - free - note that this is also available via the AppStore, for free there too

FinderMobile - free - lets you browse the files on your iPhone. Not really that useful as far as I can tell - it doesn't appear that you can do much with the files. You can open some kinds of files, I believe, but you can move or copy things or anything of that sort. Destined for deletion at some point....

gpSPhone - free - GBA emulator. I haven't really tried it other then to launch it, but reportedly it works. You have to copy your roms onto the phone via other means.

UnlimTones - free - direct download of ringtones. You can download them and use them right away. I downloaded a Super Mario Bros. and a Zelda ringtone. Probably somewhat questionable, but I've got the games they are from. This just saves me the trouble of having to record the sounds myself.

RockApp - free - another jailbreak software store. I like it more then Cydia - it's faster and has a better GUI, except that not all paid software is available for purchase from within it. MiWi and Mi3G require RockApp.

ScreenDimmer - paid - provides customizable display dimming (strangely missing from the iPhone/iPod touch) as well as options such as turning off screen locking when the iPhone is powered. Simple, but I love it, and it's cheap.

AutoCorrection SBSettings add-on - free - gives a toggle for autocorrection

Autolock SBSettings add-on - free - a bit redundant given that I have ScreenDimmer, but might come in handy at some point

Already covered by Malik:

MyWi - paid, but so worth it
SBSettings - free
Activator - free
CyDelete - free
OpenSSH - free

I also tried BTstack GPS, but it seemed to cause instability. It is suppose to add support for external bluetooth GPS receivers, with support for any App on the iPhone. Hopefully the instability can be fixed as I've ordered a bluetooth GPS unit that should give me better GPS reception. In any case I want to try it out and see if it makes it better or not. I especially want it for GeoCaching, want to use it with the official Geocaching app. Also navigation, of course.

I jaikbroke my old 3GS and then unlocked it. I then tried putting my wife's AT&T pay-as-you-go sim card in it and it works! There's support for it as it outs up a message after each call saying how much it cost and remaining balance! No data over cellular and no visual voice mail, but it works great, and a ton better then her cheap phone. Not to mention apps, and the iPod bits of it, plus data over wifi.

I'm not actually sure if unlocking was necessary, as I forgot to try it first, but I think it is. In any case, I'm now definitely going to keep it.
