iPhone, iPad & iOS Discussion -- White iPhone on Sale 4/28

anyone here use one of those iphone dash mounts? i need one that can use with the iphone bumpers on it. just tried the gps app and it surprisingly works just as well as my garmin nuvi. so since i use a gps so sparingly, i decided to ditch the garmin and just use the iphone.
It would appear the Netflix app is finally out for iPhone/Touch. It's about time!
yup, just downloaded it and even with my shitty work 3g the streaming works pretty nice.

The case I got was the speck fitted, its really nice actually. I've always kinda been against have a case on my iPhone but i'm really digging this thing.

Wow - you can stream Netflix shit right to your iPhone? Awesome.

So glad NetFlix finally made it out. I travel 4-5 days a week in the fall, so this is a godsend.

Mmmmm... portable NetFlix (that doesn't involved me bringing anything I wouldn't normally bring).

anyone know if restoring your iphone will update the firmware? i remember restoring before and itunes automatically updated my firmware. there's too much junk on my iphone and needed to restore everything

I got my freebie Griffin Reveal Etch case today. It seems pretty good, but it feels a little strange. Not sure what it is about it. Also the quality isn't perfect - the upper right corner edge has a little dimple that is visible, or at least it was to me. I haven't tried it with my headphones yet to see if they fit.

On a different note, on vacation this past week I took a bunch of video and outdoors the results are pretty impressive. Great HD, except that it's hard to hold steady. Indoors the quality is pretty dramatically worse. Not too shocking I suppose.

So last night I let my son play with my iPhone and sure enough he did something to it so I had to restore the thing from my computer. The problem is that my last sync was on August 4 so I lost everything I DLed straight to the phone from then until now. The restore also didn't create any folders so everything is a complete mess. Is there any way to get back the stuff I DLed? I'm specifically looking to get the stuff that was on sale - I don't want to have to re-buy anything and if something was free when I DLed it I don't want to have to pay.

So overall I'm really happy I got this little device. I have yet to try FaceTime though as I only know of one other person with an iPhone 4...and he's someone I don't really care to pretend to be friendly with just to try out the feature. I'm going to wait until my colleague gets his

I have to give an overall thumbs sideways for the Griffin Reveal Etch case. It's OK. The feel of it I've gotten use to, but the quality is only fair, with a not terribly tight fit that results in the iPhone looking a little bit rounded and less appealing. Also the rubber sides have ridges where they were formed (not sure if that's the words for it) and I question the hard plastic back - I feel like the slightly soft TPU plastic back (the entirety of the case) of the Case-Mate Gelli would give better protection from a drop. I'm still using the Etch for now, but I think I'm going to go back to the Case-Mate Gelli. The Gelli fits tightly (except the bottom edge, but that's due to a generous dock connector opening, and the Etch has the same issue, plus the Gelli shows the metal band sides quite well, versus the Etch which completely hides them.

I also finally tried out the Netflix app. It works *fantastic* at home via WiFi. The quality is impressive. On the train with 3G the results are a bit less impressive. When first starting a movie I get a lot of pauses of playback, I guess as it's adjusting, although eventually it seems to smooth out, and the quality is pretty amazing given that it's on 3G. It's actually pretty close to how it looks on WiFi. Might even be exactly the same. Not sure yet. Will be testing it out quite a bit this week. Even with the playback hiccups when on 3G, it's a pretty wonderful thing to have.

EDIT: Only problem with netflix is that I keep getting interrupted by notfications in Riener Knizia's Samurai and Carcassonne, and I find myself drawn away to those. :)

I got my case over the weekend and I like it. I went with the Incase clear smoke colored snap on case. It's not bulky at all and alot better grip, it no longer slides on damn near flat surfaces. LOL all you know what i'm talking about that shit would slide right across anything from a rested position.

Also had a little stand that I threw in my lunch bag for watching videos on break.

my brother got the smoke one too, im a little jealous because the clear one i got is slick and the smoke has some grip to it.

the one i chose wont be here till late sept(ordered like the day after that app came out :| ) but now i dont really want it since ive seen some review on it and how it looks... at the time i chose it there wasnt anything about it.... ive had my bumper since release anyway but still... i like cosmetic changes >_>

There's a phone number to call Apple...specifically to try out FaceTime. I don't have the number with me, but, I think it's in the paperwork that came with the phone.

I really hope they add a hard keyboard to the next one because I'm getting really tired of having to spell check every word I type(spell check might think i typed a different word) because my fingers are pretty big, even when I use it horizontally.

That and I've been disappointed with ios4 so far.

I mean there are some great things about the phone, but I think I sometimes get overwhelmed with it. I have a 3gs btw.

adding a physical keyboard would be a pretty stupid idea, just get your eye hand coordination up and youll be good. i hated the vertical keyboard too but you just godda use it. almost brought my 3GS back before i got my ip4 because of it. and has for ios4 going, just jailbreak it. youll love your phone a hell of a lot more :whistle2:#

Interesting, I don't know anyone who upgraded from 3G or 3GS besides me. So I haven't got to use it yet... A quick google came up with this:

Looking to test out FaceTime on your new iPhone 4 but don't know anyone else with the latest handset? Apple has provided a toll-free number for users to call and video chat with a company representative.

This week Apple sent out e-mails to customers, letting them know that they could try out FaceTime by calling the toll-free 1-888-FACETIME (322-3846) number. The hotline is available between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. CDT.

"Want to try FaceTime? Give us a call," the note reads. "An Apple representative will show you the basics and a few advanced tips. Before you call, make sure you have a Wi-Fi connection."

A user who calls Apple will talk to a representative who asks questions about the FaceTime configuration and Wi-Fi connectivity. They will then engage in a FaceTime conversation, and explain all of the features of the open standard found in the iPhone 4.

FaceTime is a new open standard announced by Apple earlier this month alongside the introduction of iPhone 4. It requires Wi-Fi to operate, and currently is only available when using two iPhones.

No setup is required, and the feature is enabled while on a call with someone. Either the front or rear camera can be used with FaceTime.
I wonder how many naked/on the toilet calls are on Youtube of people trying this. Still waiting for a chatroulette kinda app to come out for the camera. :)

Malik - I hope you canceled your preorder of that Vapor case. iLounge has had two review versions, and both made the "death grip" automatic. Ouch. The second one was the company's attempt to fix the problem, but it didn't help. Plus in order to remove the iPhone from the case you have to unscrew 4 tiny screws, and the optional carbon fiber back attaches with adhesive to your iPhone. Bizarre. See: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/entry/element-case-vapor-for-iphone-4/

I don't want a physical keyboard on a future iPhone, but I would definitely take a PSPGo like slide out game controller. I'd never use a keyboard, but I'd certainly like to have a physical controller for emulated games and such, and potentially new games that would then support it. I've never used a Go, though, so don't know if that one is actually any good.

Yeah, Netflix is great, though I do get stops and starts while using it with 3G on my way to work (on the train/bus). It doesn't really seem to be related to signal. It happens even if I'm standing still, usually for the first minute or two of playback, then it mostly seems to clear up. I guess it's adjusting to the bandwidth. I wish they handled that better, but it's still a great app.
Here come a few million returns on the iPhone 4G?

http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2010/08/apple-may-release-revised-iphone-4-after-sept-30.ars
i know a few of us suspected this would happen based on the odd time frame apple announced with the free cases and the delay of the white iphone 4. if that happens people will be upset. and nobody will do anything about it except buy more apple products (it would seem i fall into that category after my previous rants too).

The Netflix stops and starts are actually pretty bad while on the move (in my case, on a train), as it turns out. Yesterday I was trying to watch a movie on the train ride home and it was pretty aggravating. I wish it did MUCH better buffering and/or control of the bitrate. It works well when at home on WiFi and perhaps even 3G when not moving, but not so much if you are moving. A bit disappointing.

EDIT: I wish I could use the Apple Bumper case. That looks the best to me, except for the headphone port. It won't work with my headphones and that's a deal killer. I wish somebody would make a tiny port extension that doesn't extend beyond the edge of the case, just brings the port out to that point. Not sure if that's possible, but if anybody makes one of those, I'll buy it and the bumper case.

Don't think you'll find something that small, but something like this should work . . .

http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/headphoneadapter
http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Technology-Headphone-Adapter-iPhone/dp/B000VEOIEO

The first iPhone had a recessed headphone jack that was too small to fit most third-party headphones, so there were several adapters (such as the one I linked) which were made to connect them. If the adapter worked with that recessed port, it should work with the bumper. Might be hard to find in a retail store at this point, but they should still be out there online at least.

Edit: Also found this, which is cheaper and at least a bit smaller, but I know nothing at all about the company, so caveat emptor:

The quality of the HTML Live Streaming is pretty stunning. And it's just as amazing on the iPhone 4. So much for flash for streaming. Or even Silverlight. I wonder if the Netflix app will be modified to use HTML Live Streaming?

EDIT: and the fans in my MacBook aren't going completely bonkers like they do with Flash every... single... time. CPU utilization < 20% (at 15% right now, even as I type this in a separate window, and on a first gen MacBook). Nice. On the other hand, I have seen occasional hiccups, but they've gone away after a little bit.

EDIT2: actually, now I've gotten a weird thing where it jumped to an intro video. I had to reload to get the live stream back. Hmm. Growing pains?

EDIT3: holy crap. New AppleTV is incredibly tiny. Will it be more useful?

Alright, sorry about the off-topic. Back to normal. Started out as HTML Live Streaming on the iPhone, turned into this. :)

Apple will release an update to its mobile operating system next week that fixes many bugs while introducing several new features to iOS. The company showed off those features Wednesday during its fall music media event in San Francisco.

In addition to the iOS 4.1 update for the iPhones and iPod touch, Apple also previewed another update to its mobile operating system on Wednesday. The iOS 4.2 update will work on all of Apple’s mobile handhelds—including the iPad—when it arrives in November.

Among iOS 4.1’s new features are high dynamic range (HDR) photos, Game Center, uploading full HD videos over Wi-Fi, TV show rentals, and a handful of major bug fixes.

High dynamic range photos are actually three photos shot in rapid succession with different exposure ranges, then combined into one photo featuring the widest color and exposure range possible.

Game Center was first announced when Apple previewed iOS 4 this spring but didn't appear in the operating system’s June release. It incorporates many of the features of existing third-party iOS gaming networks, allowing users to challenge friends to games, auto-match you with other players “if you don’t have any friends,” compare scores, and discover new games that your friends are playing.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs also announced AirPlay for iOS 4.1, an updated version of Apple’s AirTunes feature that iTunes shares with the AirPort Express. iOS devices will now be able to stream from iTunes, but in addition to audio, AirPlay now allows video and photos to be streamed.

A number of bugs have also been squashed in iOS 4.1. Jobs said the update would address proximity sensor issues with the iPhone 4 as well as problems with Bluetooth connectivity and audio quality. In addition, the iOS 4.1 update should improve sluggish performance on older iPhone 3G models.

A preview of iOS 4.2, which is scheduled to arrive for the iPad in November, also made an appearance. Jobs stated that iOS 4.1 features like Game Center and HDR photos will come to the iPad (despite its current camera-less design), as well as AirPlay and wireless printing—a much requested feature since the iPad first arrived.

Both the iOS 4.1 and 4.2 updates will be free to owners of iOS devices. We'll have more details on iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2 as they become available.

Thank goodness my league is on Yahoo.

How is reading PDF's and books on the iOS 4.1 (well on the iPhone/iPod touch line of devices)? Now I am not going to be reading novels on it, but well I am a programmer and I was wondering if it would allow me to easily store programming books/pdf's and use them as a reference when I needed them. I would only be reading like 5-10 pages max at a time and it's strictly for reference.

Thanks

There's no way my headphone jack would work with the Bumper case - the plug is fatter and sits nearly flush. The adapters that were posted would be ok if my headphone jack wasn't also angled. Guess I'll have to settle for 3rd party cases.

Speaking of which, the Griffin Reveal Etch is even worse then it first seemed. The rubber is so cheap that in the very short time I've had it, it's already started to flake apart. The front edge is starting to sort of crumble apart, I guess from taking it in and out of my jeans. Thumbs down now on this line.

I think it's pretty nice, especially on a Retina Display. Probably even better on an iPad, but I don't have one (except that it's DPI is much lower, so you see the pixels - still, you're going to be able to see more on a page/two pages at once). You might not notice the pixels on the iPad if you aren't use to a Retina display, though. Not sure. I'm hoping Apple will reveal a new higher DPI iPad, and preferably a bit smaller too. 7" would be perfect, I think. Anyway, I haven't tried reading technical documents on my iPhone 4, but I have read Winnie the Poo to my kids on it and it's really nice. Also dabbled a bit with novels an it was fine - I'm just not much of a novel reader these days....

The new iPod touch has a Retina display, so it would be great (presumable - it's not like I've seen it in person yet, but it's suppose to be the same display so should be awesome). The iPhone 4 is fantastic, of course.

Hey is the retina display scratch resistant ? and if anyone owns an iphone 4 can you tell me if you personally have scratches on yours, thanks

I have no scratches at all on mine and I don't use a screen protector and I do put in my jeans pocket and such. YMMV. I didn't have any scratches on my previous iPhone either, at least not on the glass. :)

Ugh. That's the one I got too, though I haven't really used it at all yet. I put it on for about two minutes, then decided that I preferred my bumper and went back to that. I actually felt like the bumper does a better job of protecting the phone than that case does.

The cynical part of me says that they probably intentionally sent out crappy cases for free so that they could fulfill whatever obligation they had to make things "right" with the antenna issue without actually cutting into case sales.

The iPhone 4 uses gorilla glass which is pretty resistant to scatches and fairly uncrackable. I still use a zagg protector though.

my brother and girlfriend havent used a screen protector since they got their 4s at launch and they both still look great. i have a zagg protector because im paranoid.

Okay that is good, I know this is the "iPhone4" thread but I am getting the new ipod touch with the retina display and I just wanted to know if it would scratch easily.

not sure about the touch 4, it has different casing so the glass might be different too. havent read enough about the touch to know how different it is.

iOS 4.1 was released today along with Game Center. from what i've read Game Center support is limited right now, but I'd expect it to grow quite a bit over the next few weeks. gotta go home and update my phone after work.

I just noticed that there's a Ms. Pac-Man update that adds support for Game Center! Anyone with that game and 4.1, you might want to check your app updates. Alas, I'm jailbroken and not sure I'm willing to give that up even for a short period of time, so I don't think I'll be able to test it out.

Nice, i have not Jailbroken, so im ok with updating my phone.

I rather make sure i grab my desired "gamertag" right now and wait for an updated jailbrake later down the line.:bouncy:

I'm considering upgrading to 4.1, just to test out Game Center and grab my gamertag, then revert to 4.0.1 and jailbreaking again and wait for the jailbreak to really upgrade.
