CAGiversary!

This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it was getting very close to the 5,000 thread mark, I figured it was time for a reset.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

Apple Game Center
Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games are starting to support this. Currently this only runs on iPod & iPhone, but an update will be coming soon that enables this for iPad users.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center exchange thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs. You can also exchange OpenFeint & Plus+ names there.

Important Notes:

 1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
 2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
 3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
 4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
 5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
 6. Apps can be re-downloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
 7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
 8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
 9. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.
 10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

I bought Osmos for iPad @99 cents to go along with my iPhone version. I definitely think it will benefit from the bigger screen. Just need that iPad now for all these games I've bought for it....

Sorry this is slightly off topic - but is there a way to get files from iAmDrums that I have saved through iFileExplorer? I have beats created in there I'd like to load on a computer. Thanks.

Thanks mrsamsa! Looks interesting.

Also, I noticed there's a new game call Overkill that just got released yesterday and is free... looks like Killzone?

On a random and related note: Does anyone of you have a dislike toward apps that "flip flops"? What I meant is... whenever I check out an app, I would look in AppShopper app under "app activity" to see its history. Lots of the apps, I notice they like to flip flop from free to paid to free to paid repeatedly over its life span on the app store. It's like the dev wants to take advantage of the "price udpates/drop to free" feature spot (of reporting sites like appshopper) to remain at the top. Is it just me or do you guys also got deter from downloading said app? Mainly out of principle to... boycotting the sly ones. :p
For all you musician CAGs out there, Nota for iPad just went free!!! I bought this on sale for my iPhone a while ago and couldn't help but wish I saved the money for the iPad version because of the screen size and my wish just came true, and best of all it dropped to FREE!

Awesome! I just bought my mother an iPad2 and she thought that Garage Band looked pretty neat for the piano. She'll like this, thanks.

I refrain from buying anything with a history of dropping to free frequently for two reasons: 1. why should I pay for something that has a good chance of going free and 2. questionable quality if it has to go free repeatedly.

It just means I'm more likely to wait for it to go free again.

Can anyone recommend a good free checklist/to-do app for iPhone? I am working on several projects for different clients at multiple locations and would like something that allows me to organize task lists within project folders in a simple interface. I know there might not be anything perfect that's free, but I'll gladly take any recommendations. Thanks in advance.

They claim Pilot Winds was in development before Tiny Wings was released. You can judge for yourself while it is FREE.

Not sure if it is for Iphone or not but I use Evernote on my Ipad and could not be happier with it. Check and see if there is an Iphone version.

I call BS... It's nearly identical to Tiny Wings... It's too similar to be coincidence. And it has ads plastered across every screen. Deleted.

You might call BS, but it's really pretty beside the point, because both of these games used another game as their inspiration. The name of it is escaping me at the moment. So both of them are ripoffs if you want to go that direction, but let's face it - all games are essentially ripoffs of something else if you're going to look at it that way.

Mind you, I downloaded this game but haven't tried it yet, so I can't comment on it's qualities.

EDIT: note that the game is NOT really free, at least not entirely. It's free with somewhat limited modes and ads, the rest are unlocked via IAP and that also removes the ads. At least it has a free capability, unlike Tiny Wings.

"Started development first" doesn't mean shit. Released first is all that matters... because really, does the consumer care when you started the game? Hell to the no! They care when they have a game in their hands that they can play. Anyway, the game is fug. Ads in games are also annoying. Deleted.

Um, they don't care what the consumer thinks. The reason to claim that you started development first is to avoid an intellectual-property lawsuit by the maker of the other product.
gameloft's got a WoW knock off coming, I'm mildly intrigued but can only imagine how destructive a portable WoW could be to my real life.

oh my gawd... game over man... I'll probably never play another game on my iphone again. Damn you Gameloft! Starfront was bad enough for the rest of my backlog! Now this! Bah! I hope it's not pay to play tho... Besides of course a purchase amount.

Also, that has to be their most blatant rip off yet. Most games look VERY similar to the game they are copying. This is like 99% similar. I thought in the beginning of the trailer that they were showing off WoW first to show the similarities lol.

I think it looks fine, although I've never played Tiny Wings.

Personally, I find it annoying that the game advertises itself as free when it's clearly a demo with an in-app upgrade.

It looks good to me, if it's a freemium I'll give it a try. I won't pay a monthly fee though because I'm currently playing Rift. On a good note I think they nailed the art style of WOW.

I'm glad I'll get to see what all the hype is about with WoW, albeit in copycat form. WoW is a game I'll never even try due to the pricing. I'd rather not get sucked into that. Of course if Order & Chaos uses a similar model I guess I won't be playing it either. EDIT: thought I'd get a lot more value out of it since my iPhone is with me all the time. Hopefully it's universal and your game works seamlessly between devices. I presume it will given that it's all online.

I saw some Chinese name during the trailer. Is Gameloft just porting over one of the many CMMORPGs? WoW is WoW because it doesn't focus on the grind associated with Korean and Chinese MMOs, among other streamlining.

And how do you save in Kira*Kira?

Get more value out of an MMO? When I played WoW, the $13 I spent for 80+ hours a month was one of best values of gaming. And I had no time to play other games, so it saved money there too. MMOs are actually one of the best values in gaming, if you get into them. The problem is when you get into them too much, and can't stop playing.

Leave it to Gameloft to pull another perfect clone :applause: could Gameloft just be the perfect cover band :bouncy:
I was listening to a podcast the other day that was talking about gameloft licensing the rights to make a game based on some big franchise(can not recall which sorry)and on the podcast they joked that it did not go down that way at all. They said that gameloft probably went to them and said look we are going to make this game with or without you, question is do you want us to license your characters and game world or do you want us to blatantly rip you off, the game is happening either way!

It would have been awesome if EA chose to cut the prices of their iPad versions too... you know, I heard a new one came out and it was kind of a big deal.

i doubt it'll go on sale until it reaches a very low point on the top charts.

Haven't seen this mentioned.
Tapper World Tour just came out recently. Seems to have been given quite the retro TLC remake treatment -- even getting Don Bluth to design the visuals. Separate versions for iPhone and iPad, but both are receiving great scores. (IGN gave it an 8.5)

It's only $0.99 on iPhone, and $1.99 on iPad. They say it's a limited launch price.

I think I might bite on this game, Don Bluth artwork looks great as always, also I've played the original game as a kid in the arcade, it was fun back then so it might have some nostalgia value for me. Has anyone got this game yet? I'd love to hear how it holds up today before I buy it though.

1st I heard about the Don Bluth animations, I'd love to hear some impressions too ... might grab it tonight too, looks pretty quirky and fun.

Slight tangent, I'm loving the games on the iPad, might actually sell my DS because I'm enjoying the iPad games alot more than I thought I would.

I picked up the Tapper game. It is fun, but has been a bit buggy (crashed a few times, the game is now playing without sound, despite hard restart of iPad, etc)...

If it is truly an 'intro price', then I would say jump, because it is classic fun.
