CAGiversary!

This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it was getting very close to the 5,000 thread mark, I figured it was time for a reset.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

Apple Game Center
Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games are starting to support this. Currently this only runs on iPod & iPhone, but an update will be coming soon that enables this for iPad users.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center exchange thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs. You can also exchange OpenFeint & Plus+ names there.

Important Notes:

 1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
 2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
 3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
 4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
 5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
 6. Apps can be re-downloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
 7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
 8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
 9. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.
 10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.
Nota is a steal at full price. It is an invaluable chord/scale reference. Get it while it's free.
Sadly it's no longer free. I missed it.
Sadly it's no longer free. I missed it.
It's worth it even at $3. You can't even buy a chord chart for that much. I guess you can wait for a future drop, but who knows how long that will be.

If you want, Acordes is now free. It's pretty similar to Nota, but not as good.

I just have to say that Glu is a publisher of some really crappy games. Their business model may make financial sense, in regards to tons of free games with micro-transactions and points systems that involve time and downloading other games ... but it's shit like that that will ruin the iPad and iPhone as gaming platforms and something that is far too common in the online casual gaming market. So yeah ... just had to rant, because every Glu game I've downloaded has been terrible to alright and almost all of them require you to pay to play, so to speak, as the game goes on.

Chicken Balls HD has dropped from $2.99 to $0.99 (http://itunes.apple.com/app/chicken-balls-hd/id421021651?mt=8)

"You play Crash, the BRAVEST chicken this side of New Mexico. It’s the summer of 1947, you've just come back from the war and had hoped to hang up your flight cap for good. When a UFO crash lands just outside the nearby town of Roswell you knew you’d have to take to the skies - one more time.

** Gameplay **

- insanely ADDICTIVE physics puzzle gameplay with 50 levels of Chicken Balls craziness with many more coming soon in free updates!

- an innovative mix of ‘slingshot’ physics destruction with pachinko/breakout style gameplay.

- collect all the eggs on each level and unleash the power of Farmaggeddon on the unsuspecting aliens!

- using alien technology ("powerups") to make Crash bigger, faster, stronger and more! Earn OpenFeint and GameCenter achievements. Beat your friends’ high scores for each level."
However, Super Match 3 allows players to make moves that clear no pieces, adding a strategic element to gameplay. "
The one thing you've always wanted ever since the first match 3 game you've played sadly comes well after you've become so sick of the genre that you can't even bring yourself to download it for free.

Got the other two though. Thanks, Dims.
This is a really good Visual Novel game. I bought it at $10 and no complaints from me.
At what point does Kira Kira actually turn into a game? I played it for about 30 minutes last night, and it was all just non-interactive text. I mean, I know what visual novels are, and that they involve a lot of text, and so on. I've played a few before. But I found myself getting seriously impatient for this one to give me the chance to do something other than read; to let me at least make some choices within the game. I mean, if I want to just read a non-interactive book, I've got plenty of better ones on my shelf.

I dunno, maybe it was just the incredibly awkward writing/translation. But I found myself glad that the proceeds are being donated to the earthquake relief, as at least I feel like my money went to something.

I am kind of jonesing for a gift card sale now that I have an iPad... any potential news out there for an upcoming sale?

Solomon's Boneyard is currently available for FREE.
"Twenty-Three years before the horrifying events chronicled in "Solomon's Keep," the Wizard's college first suspected they might have a problem with one of their new graduates. A battle mage was dispatched to put an end to this young "Solomon Dark" before he could grow in power...
* * *
In Solomon's Boneyard, you can play as one of seven young wizards, with over thirty skills to master. The game is a survival two-thumb shooter, where you will face wave after wave of undead hordes, while gaining levels and choosing new skills to fight with."

Undead Attack! Pinball HD
for the iPad (only) has dropped back down to .99 for the time being.
"Tired of fighting the undead hordes with the usual tools of destruction? That old rusted chainsaw just isn’t “cutting it” any more? So get ready for the next level of undead killing machinery with Undead Attack! Pinball HD.
Yes you read it right, it’s a pinball and it has undead monsters! Run over the hordes of evil with two types of special undead purging balls, use the scenery and the iPad accelerometer to your advantage and defend the gate at any cost!"

For those of you (like me) who have hundreds of movies in various rooms of the house, DVD Catalog for the iPhone may help you keep track of what you have (and where it's located). It's currently on sale for .99 for the first time.
"DVD Catalog with online BACKUP and RESTORE webservice at www.MyDVDCatalog.com ( for free!) is the fastest way to enter your entire DVD collection into your iPhone. You can enter your DVDs both manually or with the tap of a button you can use the AUTO LOAD button where you simply type in your movie title and let our web service find your movie for you and fill in all the information as well as a photo of the movie!
Forget about entering bar codes. Entering a movie is much easier and faster. As soon as you see your movie, tap on it and then tap on save! That is it!"

I did the same thing! It was an okay little story, and I actually enjoyed the Engrish (more so than I do bad writing by native English speakers), but there was no interactivity. And the default text scroll speed is very slow -- meaning I have to tap to get the whole sentence to show up, then tap again to move onto the next sentence. Kind of cumbersome.
Dark Nebula - Episode Two is now free (was $1.99). 4.5 stars over 750+ ratings

Sick! Thanks tangamer. I already got Episode one free a while back. Pretty sweet to get both of them for free.

Also, I played Kira Kira until the opening music video thing on (about an hour or so maybe?). So far it's pretty entertaining. If you enjoy reading manga or watching anime, you'd probably like it. Nowhere near as perverted as I thought it would be from the warnings. At least not yet.

For those who expect more interactivity, it is, after all a "visual novel," heh. I was only presented with one decision to make (button to click) in the first hour of playing. I don't mind though; I really only care about what happens in the story, and I sure the decisions will come after the initial background/story is set. This game is takes like 12 hours to complete one playthrough, I've heard, so you have to be patient. If you don't like reading at all, this "game" probably isn't for you.

iRequiem received the requisite number of votes to qualify for its .99 Fire Sale pricing.
"iRequiem is a horror themed shooter taking place in hell, which is depicted as a dark gothic medieval world. The story begins after Evil takes the main protagonist's soul and endows him with dark powers.
iRequiem will have you fighting against a horde of zombies and other creatures - don't worry about your weapon of choice as you will be supplied with a mixture of real-world modern weapons like shotguns, grenade/rocket launchers and medieval/fantasy weapons such as bows and crossbows. Along the way you will gain dark magic weapons such as spells, amulets, dark powers and rites.
You control the main protagonist, but there are vehicles which you can control too. In addition, a special power allows you to possess any of the monsters available in the game, and to use all of its attack skills until it dies! Some dark powers will allow you to summon creatures who will help you in battle. Also, you can take on the form of a Werewolf, and use its special attack skills to quickly vanquish your enemies. And that isn't all..."

PvZ for iPad for $1.99 tomorrow? I'm in for that, even though I'm not really that crazy about the game myself. My kids love it, so I'll get it for them and... who knows, maybe having it on the iPad will finally get me to play it. I'll probably also pick up Escape Rosecliff Island HD. I don't mind a good find the hidden object game. Hopefully this fits the bill. I have all the iPhone games of theirs that I want. Only ones I don't have are Rosecliff and Chuzzle. Chuzzle I'm not too interested in.

I wish EA would get into the Japan relief thing, and discount Scrabble for iPad.

Chuzzle = awesome

Usually this rationale is utilized at the bar.

Second Impact: Rise of Man is FREE through the weekend.
NOTE: This is an iPad-only game.
"65 million years ago the asteroids appeared over our skies in a fiery mass of utter destruction. In the end, the asteroids caused First Impact and sent the helpless dinosaurs to an early grave. Times have changed and mankind now rules this planet. Suddenly the asteroids have returned to darken our skies once more. They have come to finish what they started 65 million years ago. Unlike the dinosaurs, man will not go down without a fight. We will use explosive missiles, nuclear technology, and even experimental black holes to defend what is rightfully ours. So take up arms and protect our planet to avoid Second Impact!"

Oh man, this X 1000. That was probably overall the worst aspect of the "game". I was getting very, very tired of that by the time I stopped playing.
For those who expect more interactivity, it is, after all a "visual novel," heh. I was only presented with one decision to make (button to click) in the first hour of playing.
I dunno . . . Like I said, I've played other visual novels before, and they've all been a lot more interactive than this. The interactivity is the reason why I choose to play a visual novel rather than, say, watching an anime or reading a manga. If there's no interaction, or only minimal, then what's the point?
If you don't like reading at all, this "game" probably isn't for you.
Haha, I have both a BA and an MA in English Literature, so reading isn't the issue. The issues are that it's poorly written (and awkwardly translated), it's not very engaging, it lacks any interaction, and it's got an extremely clunky interface. Still, I'll give it a bit more time to see if it gets any better, since I did drop $4.99 on it.

Visual Novels have precious little player choice. One hour per choice is on average, and that player choice often makes no logical sense with regard to actions vs. consequences but it will still start a different story branch anyway.

Alcedes: Let me guess, you saw that on Kotaku? ;) Me too, though it honestly didn't look that great. I tend to like what Chillingo publishes, though.

RollingSkull: I guess I keep waiting for something of the quality level of Snatcher, but I guess it's not the same form of "graphic novel." Guess I'll have to work on getting my import copy of Policenauts to work on my PC again...

Oh, don't get me wrong. They are a hideous abortion of a genre with next to no value in the field they seem to be shooting for.

Yeah, I'm upset.

Anyways, if you want something GOOD in the vein of a choose your text adventure game, the best ones you're going to get on the platform are Surviving High School and Cause of Death, both from the same company. The free versions are identical to the paid versions, even, so give them a shot. One's a campy schlocky high school/college themed romp. The other is a schlocky attempt at a modern crime show. Both are schlock but good schlock. A full adventure, some additional paid adventures, and free episodes each week, too, but getting into SHS this late in the game is daunting as you're about 60+ episodes behind and the old eps are archive as pay only and SHS is in the middle of a kinda goofy plotline. Cause of Death is only about 12-ish episodes in but each of those spoils the main campaign and the "first season," but you could still kinda slide in there. Just play the main campaigns in both games first and see if you wanna keep going.

CoD doesn't have the dull minigames SHS has, either, thankfully.

Solomons boneyard is really good! Twin Stick shooter with light RPG elements like upgrading characters = awesome. My only complaint is that it takes a TON of gold to do anything.

Got this the first time it was free, it is great.

Try getting the telekinesis perk first, you won't regret it:cool:

The PopCap games sale is now live. In for Plants vs Zombies and Peggle.
Edit: they are being modified so it might be a min or 2

Goddamnit App Store! If I have an iPad, I clearly don't want to buy the iPhone version of PvZ!

And it charged me full price too. Sent a thing to iTunes customer support; do I have any shot here?

I just picked up pvz last Monday for $6.99 too...

I picked up the touch version though and am waiting for peggle to finish getting updated so I can buy it.

Is the rosecliff game any good?

Peggle works now but I'm kind of disappointed that it shows pictures of Peggle Nights and it's not included, it's an 3 dollar in app purchase.

Just grabbed TapDJ, Peggle, and Mirror's Edge.
Thinking about Monopoly, but I guess it has ads in it, which I don't like the idea of. Kinda want Bejeweled, but I've gotten a lot of games recently, so I can wait on it.

Yes you do, but it might take a few days for you to get refunded. They're more lenient because of kids charging all those smurf berries to their parents cards lol
Oh man. TAp DJ is AWESOME! I wish it would auto-beat match, though, cos I'm terrible at that.
Future DJ has that, and is still on sale for $2.

App Store

To the guy that wanted an iPad equivalent, the people that make flare scratch have an iPad app called baby decks dj (which is like tap dj) and there is also Djay for the iPad (which is like future dj) but they are, respectively, $25 and $20.

Nabbed Escape from Rosecliff Manor, since I've been intrigued by hidden-picture games but never really played them. Also got Tap DJ, even though I already have Flare Scratch.

Been playing a lot of Fishtropolis lately. 1-starred every level, but as many of you know that's just the beginning.
