CAGiversary!

This is a continuation of this previous thread. Since it was getting very close to the 5,000 thread mark, I figured it was time for a reset.

Post any deals you find, recommendations, requests for deals, etc. Please keep things as civil as possible. There's no such thing as a bad deal post and reviews are opinions. :)

Games in the App store are constantly going on sale. While I originally posted games and prices in this post, it's become almost impossible to keep up with it all. Feel free to post in this topic on good deals and games you enjoy. Developers are also encouraged to join in, especially if they are running promos or sales.

If you want to check out a particular game, try the following review sites, or ask in here so fellow CAG's can assist you.

Apple Game Center
Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games are starting to support this. Currently this only runs on iPod & iPhone, but an update will be coming soon that enables this for iPad users.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center exchange thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs. You can also exchange OpenFeint & Plus+ names there.

Important Notes:

 1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.
 2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.
 3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday.
 4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.
 5. Make sure to backup your purchases in iTunes to CD/DVD for safe keeping. You can do this by clicking File-->Library-->Backup to Disc. Then choose all purchases, applications only, and full or incremental backup. How often is up to you, but I do this monthly, or more often if I buy a lot of apps.
 6. Apps can be re-downloaded without incurring an extra charge if you previously purchased it. This is good if you have a crash and forget to backup your purchases. I don't know if this is a permanent feature so backing up regularly is still important.
 7. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores, receiving cards as gifts, etc are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.
 8. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE, or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.
 9. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.
 10. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Two come in a pack, average price I've seen is $20. They have an Ebay Store that might save you a few bucks. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

I have a question, does anyone if I can leave the apps on my ipod, sell it and remove my account information?

and just redownload them on my new ipod?

Age of Zombies is excellent, highly recommend it! Picked it up last night for a buck and beat it tonight. Survival mode is crazy fun so it's got infinite replay and it's Christmas themed right now so hopefully it updates often.

Check out the lite version if nothing else. :D

redownload them (using your account)- of course
Leaving apps on ur ipod (yes, but who ever gets it will lose them as soon as they sync & your account information will still be on their they just can't use it without a password)

Thought it was worth mentioning that Mirror's Edge is now 99 cents for both iPod and iPad. It's been 99 cents on the iPod for awhile, but this is the first time for the iPad, where the lowest it's been previously is 4.99

Yes, you can do that. I have multiple iDevices that share the same apps I've purchased. As long as you use your same account information, you can re-download the apps from Apple for free. Alternately, you can just re-synch your new iPod with your iTunes account and transfer everything that way.

Not sure if you can remove your account info and leave the apps... I'd recommend doing a back-up of the device on your iTunes and wiping it clean, restoring it to factory defaults, then sell it.

When you attach your new ipod to iTunes, you can restore the backup you made of the previous device to the new one (that is if you are going from an older Touch or iPhone to a new version)...

I'd just be afraid of having paid apps in the hands of someone I didn't know since most tend to be updated on a fairly regular basis... Sharing apps between family is one thing...

Just my 2c...

It's been that price on iPad for about 10 days now. I bought it early last week for that.
Eternal Legacy or Choas Rings? Is CR worth $6?
I would say Chaos Rings from a cost value perspective. Square Enix doesnt drop there games much lower that the $6 price tag you'll get now. While Eternal Legacy will definitely hit $1 at some point, all Gameloft games do.

+1

I know someone mentioned it before, but I just wanted to add a recommendation for Cause of Death... basically Surviving High School with an adult, detective theme. I enjoyed Surviving High School, but I really love CoD (you know what I'm talking about) and the more adultness of it.

I had a long question that I just answered myself, but I wish they would sell Volumes for $1 a piece and not $1 for 2-episode packs... I wish I didn't wait so long to grab it; now I am already behind and wondering if I want to buy the first pack.

been playing infinity blade... nothing but impressed plus I like what direction the design/story is going... def my fave thing from EPIC in a while... but then again chair always has awesome development.
Have the Gameloft iPad games always been 6.99?

I thought they came out on iPhone for 6.99, and iPad for 9.99.
They usually get released at $9.99 and get slashed to $6.99 within a few weeks. Gameloft was pretty quick with dropping the prices of their latest releases though.

Back to the freebies:

Free App Calendar is featuring the online-only Dark Galaxy right now (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id403665668?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo=4).
"Space: the only frontier. With the Earth's resources all but spent, humans have colonized planets in the outer rims of the galaxy. Divided as ever, they battle endlessly among themselves, each world they inhabit a barren war zone. With alliances broken as quickly as they are formed, it's every man for himself. Do you have the will to conquer the galaxy by any means necessary?"

Great App a Day has the very-decent shmup Warblade for its freebie (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/warblade/id376424131?mt=8)
"Warblade is an arcade game with a focus on very good playability. It's a shoot'em up type of game like the old classic arcade game Galaga. Warblade is an iPhone/iPod touch remake of my old Amiga game Deluxe Galaga. A very popular game for the Amiga computer and also as Warblade on the PC and Mac. Voted most addictive game by Bytten.com
The Plot : An alien race is invading the earth and you must travel into space and fight the strange aliens to save humanity. That's the very simple plot of the game, but there is so much more to discover. The game is made with game play as the most important factor, fast arcade fun and lots of adrenaline pumping action."

Warblade had been on my wishlist for a while. Got it, and it crashed all the time. Messed with the options, and it's working now. Fun Galaga update.

Fun, except for the goofy matching game mode. Why in the world did that put that in there?

hmm... strange, I thought that the app store was down til tomorrow. I just clicked on "update apps" on my itunes for the heck of it and a bunch of apps came back with updates where just yesterday there weren't any updates available. I wonder how that happened... :whistle2:k

Podcasts are still being updated so perhaps apps operate the same way.

How are the EA games for the iPad? For only .99, i am going to try a few. Was going to probably get madden, sim city, one of the need for speed games, mirrors edge and maybe something else. Anyone try any of these?

Thanks

I picked up SimCity Deluxe a few weeks ago. Haven't really spent that much time with it, but was fairly impressed by what I saw of the implementation. Definitely seems worth the $1 if you're at all interested in it.

Can't speak for any of the others though.

So I got Shadow Guardian, and man, does anyone have problems with it crashing all the time? I have a iPhone 3GS 16 GB, and it crashes right after the Gameloft loading screen. I have to try and start it like 4x every time. Anyone else have this problem?

zillion, have you tried deleting and installing the game from itunes? Or a hard reset?
I find that much of the time, doing one of the two fixes whatever issue I had.

Yeah, I actually installed it for the first time through iTunes. I'll try it again though.

A hard reset didn't seem to make any difference. Oh well! Thanks anyway. :)

Hey, whatever floats your boat, man. I'm personally enjoying the game when I can actually get it to run.

My girlfriend got an iPhone for Christmas so we picked up Tetris, Simpsons Arcade, Snood, and Pool whatever 3. All are great and worth 99 cents for sure. Tetris and Simpsons totally broke my conception of iPhone game quality.

I bought Boggle, Yahzee, Scrabble, NFS: HP, SimCity, Tetris and maybe something else, can't remember. My girlfriend plays most of the games, which I figured. Oh and I bought BFBC. Not really a gamer on the portable devices. Yahzee is about the extent of the games I play on the iPad.

I'm a big fan of Angry Birds, Cut The Rope, Fruit Ninja and Doodle Jump. I'm looking for other good Gamecenter recommendations??? Am I missing any?

Osmos, Flight Control, Fragger, Tilt to Live, Super Mega Worm, etc. etc. just go in to the game center app and on the games page bottom it'll show you all the game center games. See what you like.

I had problems recently, but they went away after the 5th loading try. Shadow Guardians is still fun...kinda a poor man's Uncharted, but still better than nothing, as Uncharted will never be released for the IApps store.

Hey guys is Rolando and Rolando 2 worth their prices? Just played Rolando litee and it was really fun. Debating whether I should get it. Just got an ipod touch so trying to find the best games. The day I received it I bought plants vs zombies, diner dash, angry birds, cut the rope, flight control, spider, spirit, and mirror's edge. All pretty good games.
come on Infinity Blade...GO ON SALE ALREADY!
I find this to be unlikely to happen anytime soon. It's getting far too much press about how awesome it looks to get a drop. Especially since it is by CHAIR owned by Epic and Epic doesn't seem like it cares if IB sells a ton as long as they make a tidy profit off what they do sell.
Meow Meow Happy Fight dropped to .99

same guys who made piyo blocks... worth it?
I like it alot. It's a twin stick shooter, but it's all in small arenas, where you face off against only 2 or 3 other creatures in each, and you respawn. It's all about who can get the most kills with the fewest deaths. There are lots of pick ups, characters to unlock, and achievements.
Infinity Blade is probably one of the few games I can say is worth the price its at. Its better than alot of download games I've bought on my consoles.
Maybe, but I'm torn about supporting a higher cost for iPod games. It's like paying $15 for maps in Call of Duty, they only charge that because you're willing to pay for them.

I'm pretty sure that's the core of the free market system :p

I don't really see Infinity Blade going on sale if it's still on the top grossing list. There really is no point so long as they can sell at full price and people are still buying.

That is precisely his point. By not buying things at higher prices, he is exemplifying his opinion as a consumer regarding higher prices.

100% agree.

I just hit the new level cap and have mastered everything. Can't wait for the next update!

Just a couple achievements shy of getting them all.
