hmm... this isn't too big of a spoiler, but there IS shooting going on, but not in the matches, just in a few cutscenes...
i'm having a LOT of fun with this game, but it really does play differently from the first def jam. i play a lot of wrestling games, and this is not a wrestling game anymore. for me, it's around an 8 out of 10. for those that don't have it yet, check out the reviews first and here's a few notes...
- no ring... which DOES matter. i'm not saying it's a good or bad thing... it's just... really different. i don't know, it plays awkward for me, but that's because i was so into the first def jam that i was expecting a straight up wrestling game.
- the grappling system is not as deep (not that it was particularly deep the first time around). grappling counters happen when you press kick or punch at the right time, because you have no grapple counter button anymore. you no longer hold down the button for a stronger version of a move. you hold L1, then press the button. and remember how you would fail/get countered if you tried to strong grapple too early? this is not the case anymore, but it's just harder to connect a strong grapple because it's slow.
- KOs are a lot different. to KO someone, they have to be in "danger" and you can either: a) hit them with a weapon, b) hit them with a blazin' move, c) get them into one of those interactive environment attacks (like throwing them against a wall or something), d) doing a double-team move with one of the crowd, e) doing one of the style-specific moves specified in the game (like a strong grapple, if you're a grappler).
- matches are a LOT faster. mainly because life drains faster, and it's easier to KO someone.
- the game is HARD. if you get frustrated easily, play easy mode first (trust me, if you don't play def jam or any wrestling game, it still won't be easy for you). i'm playing normal mode, and i was getting stomped by sean paul of all people.
- remember how the integration of hip hop wasn't THAT involved in the game? well, in this one, it's involved a bit more. when you win matches, you win cash, which you pretty much can't use on anything except new clothes, some bling, tattoos, and uh... haircuts. and you're not exactly shopping at hot topic (though i personally don't know anyone that does). my friend isn't into hip hop at all, and he really liked the first one. he likes this one too, but he said it "alienates him more than the first one did."
- customization? sucks. can't pick your moves, only your fighting style and your finisher. only customization going on here is how your guy looks.
in general, it sorta feels like they sorta jipped me because i wanted a true def jam 2, but i'm okay with what i have now. the closest thing i can relate this game to would be like a GOOD modern day pit fighter with hip hop themes. my recommendation is to rent it or borrow it from someone else first, unless you're a very huge fan of wrestling/fighting games.
okay, back to getting my ass handed to me by fat joe. now lean back...
