Is the PS3 still a Rare item or is no one interested
The NPD numbers for December finally came out. The PS3 sold a little under 500,000 units in December in the US, bringing it to an installed base of just under 700,000. Since NPD does not include all retailers (especially Walmart) and only covers the US (while Sony's figure of 1 million shipped covered all of North America), I'd say Sony isn't doing too badly. Anyone know how many units Canada has gotten?

As for handhelds, the DS did very well (no surprise) selling 1.6 million units. But the PSP also sold 953,000, which is pretty darn good for a system that has "failed."
Well unfortunately for consumers they are out buying PSPs because the kids say they want one. Many of these families only have a PS2 from last gen and an original GBA (no light hard to see) so they think Sony is the greatest.

I've run into people at the store saying they want a PSP because the DS screen is small. They do not understand that 2 screens is better than 1. And the DS screen is backlit.

Wow - ignorance. That's just your opinion, and you can only view one screen at a time anyway. Some prefer one larger widescreen than two smaller square shaped screens. Some prefer the opposite. You're that asshole in Gamestop trying to impose your opinion on others and talk down to them because they think differently than you. You're a fascist.

I can't judge from your post whether or not you're being sarcastic overall, but in the case you aren't, "I want one" is, in my opinion, pretty sufficient criteria for buying something (budget constraints notwithstanding).

The PSP is just that damn good take your psp vs ds to the PSP and DS fourms. it is already hell in ps3 fourms

One thing may be is how many of those PSP sales were because the DS has been sold out all month everywhere. Regardless, it's nice to see the PSP doing well. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Competition breeds great games. The DS' library is significantly less impressive if there is no PSP.

I saw several PS3's (about 5, maybe 6) at Best Buy today at around noon... the first time I've EVER seen them in stores (well, technically the second). I so would've snatched one up, except I got mine on 11.17. :)

Well, just to add more to the pile of anecdotes, I saw 6 PS3's at my local Target at around closing time Friday night. Lots of people played Motorstorm or some NBA game on the demo unit (while I picked through the clearance toys for my son's birthday - yeah, cheap-ass gift giving FTW!), but no one bought one. I think they were all 60GB models. They not only had no Wii's, they had not a single Wii accessory except for a few of the carrying cases and overpriced Wii-branded SD cards.

You can draw whatever conclusion you want, but I think the reports are pretty widespread of PS3's sitting for at least a few days. You certainly can't say that for the Wii. So, without a doubt, it is a fact that at least right now, there is certainly way less interest in the PS3 than the Wii. I don't know if it is fair to say NO ONE is interested (as the thread title asks) but PS3's are certainly no longer rare.

My Target has 29 PS3's, and the other Targets nearby have around 20+ each as well. None of them had Wii's, and they all have about 5 360's.

I went to a bunch of stores yesterday (target, TRU, best buy, comp usa, wal mart...gearing up for the semester) and they all had PS3s.

Doesn't seem to be rare any more.

It's too expensive and there are no games yet. It's as simple as that. the system hasn't failed yet. jeez.

OMG! THEY KNEW!!!!

;)

I was at BB this late morning, the put up a hand written paper saying "PS3 in stock" in front of BB at the door entrance. I guess no one cares for PS3. I went there just to ask for Wii and search around the games. The guy just shook his head without talking. And he's holding a PS3.

Me: Do you guys have the Wii?
Him: *shooks head*
Me: When will you guys have them?
Him: *shooks head*

maybe hes just sad that no one buying ps3 or maybe ppl kept on asking for the wii. he looks like hes in a bad mood. pretty funny though.

maybe BB now hires mutes - they couldn't be any less helpful than normal BB employees

I just got back from TRU* and they had 17 PS3s.

More impressive this was taken by a DVDtalker last night at the Shelbyville Rd. Best Buy in Louisville:

Wii seems to be harder to find, and more in demand. For now. Things might change in this upcoming year. No one knows for sure.

It's just sad Nintendo couldn't have produced more to start with. I'm fairly certain that if they had 6 million Wiis available at launch, they still would have sold out.

Over 4 million sold so far. How many PS3s have sold, 680k?

If im not mistaken that's quoting two different sets of numbers so that isn't exactly a fair comparison. 4 mil is worldwide for the Wii, and 680k is just USA for PS3. Correct me if I'm wrong about what those numbers are though.

you are right and it is about 3.8 million 200k short
That kind of depends on whose numbers you believe (see: signature). The top numbers (vgcharts.org) are generally considered more reliable than the bottom numbers (nexgenwars.com) It's 4m to 1.4m, or 3.8m to 1.1m.
Ok...So Wii is selling 4:1. Wii = Best Selling Ever!

I was in 2 different Wal-Marts, a K-Mart, and my local Gamestop. Between the 4 stores I saw 13 60GB PS3s. My Gamestop can't sell them. They've had them for almost a full week and haven't sold any. Shocked the hell out of me.
is it possible that it has just as poor sales as 360 in japan?
No... Last week it sold like 7 times as much as the 360.

Jst got back last night from Pensacola, their Besy Buy had no less than 60 PS3's stacked up in the middle of the store, every other store I went into had them as well, at this time last years I MIGHT have only spotted ONE XB360 CORE system in stores

I think Sony is really hoping the technology prices in producing these PS3's goes down quickly like it did with the 360 so they can drop the price on it.

I still want one, but more for the Blu Ray player than anything

I don't know what the heck Best Buy is thinking, stacking so many out there on the floor. They should know that it makes it look like nobody wants them.

There is no need for sony to hope that price in producing a ps3 will go down because it is impossible for it not to go down. The only thing sony needs is system seller games which they have none at the moment.

Well, I think this might a system where it is going to take SEVERAL system seller games. I know a lot of people on here say that when "such and such" comes out, they will by it. To your average gaming person though, 1 game does not justify spending $500 or $600(especially with the large chance of it going to the 360, unless it is made by Sony).
I don't know what the heck Best Buy is thinking, stacking so many out there on the floor. They should know that it makes it look like nobody wants them.
true. can go both ways though. some1 can see a bunch of them and have that in the back of their mind. so, say after fermenting in their mind a few days they decide to buy one; they'd be more likely to go back to BB to pick one up since the impresion has formed in their mind that theyd be likely to have 1 (as opposed to driving around to different stores). even though other stores are likely to have one as well; most people ive casually talked to about it still think its hard to find. *shrug*

I went into 3 Gamestop/EB's today. I think they changed their trademark "Did you bring any trades today" greeting to "We have PS3's, would you like to buy one?" As at all 3 stores I was asked the same thing.

January's a difficult month to sell anything, much less a $500 console (or $600 if you prefer.) I think demand will pick up when people get over the Christmas buying surge... I imagine the 360 is going to sit a while too, now that the spree's over at Christmas. The local Best Buy's here have stacks upon stacks of 360's for sale.. both the crippled and the premium version. That's a far cry from last year..

This time last year I noticed that places like CompUSA and CC had 360's nuzzled in cases for sale... the slump's going to hit the most expensive hardest I suppose.

Still haven't seen any Wii's anywhere though. Given it's popularity and pricepoint, I think it'll weather the post Christmas buying drought better than the more expensive consoles...

They look like nobody wants them BECAUSE nobody wants them. Damn, I've been trying to get a Wii forever but everytime I go there it's those damn Ps3's blocking my view.

Maybe so, maybe not. I'm just saying that even if nobody wants them, a store with half a brain wouldn't want it to look that way.
Maybe so, maybe not. I'm just saying that even if nobody wants them, a store with half a brain wouldn't want it to look that way.
well they can't do anything about that. That's SONY's advertising agency job. Those pS3 boxes are HUGE. They can't be stocked in the back. If they don't sell they ship them right back to SONY. It's on credit anyway.
Well, they somehow managed to stockpile them in the back for their big New Year's sale...
yeah at the expense of something that wasn't selling. Ps3's were hot back then. Now if they don't display it people won't even ask for them.

Japanese Retailers slash PS3 Prices
dot_clear.gif

PS3 sales in Japan have not just chilled but FROZEN. The problem of PS3's not selling in their native motherland has got so bad that retailers are cutting their prices by as much as 20% in a bid to move the systems. As soon as PS3 gets some good games, expect things to heat up!

I got a PS3 at launch because the the PS1 and PS2 gave me great gaming experiences. I can play my old PS2 back catalog with a 1st party wireless controller. Moreover, Resistance Fall of Man is definitely a worthwhile game and with Virtua Fighter 5 around the corner it should be fine.

The only good games for the PS2 launch were Timesplitters and Tekken Tag which were enough to subside me until other games came out. Madden 2001 came out a couple months later, and that was the last Madden I have ever enjoyed.
You're never going to be able to import it at that price though.
Of course not. I've got friends in Japan who might be willing to hook me up though.
Blu Ray for the Japanese is the same region as the United States right? At that price, I wouldn't mind risking the import.
not for movies i dont think. sony originally said region-free games. but i think they went back on that. dont know for sure about the games, i just vaguely remember reading that somewhere.
not for movies i dont think. sony originally said region-free games. but they went back on that.
It's not region free for blu-ray movies, but Japan and the U.S. share the same region. And Sony didn't go back on region free games, the Sonic game I imported works perfectly on my PS3.
